Seventy years before Johannes Gutenberg introduced modern moveable type to Europe in 1440, Korea had already printed the first book using moveable metal type.?
Today, Han-Soo Park is the only person in South Korea continuing to preserve this tradition at his Letterpress Workshop in Paju Book City.?
as printing techniques have advanced, Park has kept an age-old tradition alive by creating poetry books and conducting workshops for Koreans to experience their often-overlooked contribution to the world.
Although the publishing industry is becoming more high tech in the digital age,
for anyone who appreciates analog beauty, letterpress prints are a true gem.
printing books for the ages
30 miles northwest of Seoul,
there is a city in Korea dedicated to all things books.
And this gentleman has been working to save a piece of the country''s printing heritage.
My name is Han Soo Park, and i run the Letterpress Workshop in Paju Book City.
This letterpress workshop is the only workshop in korea using the modern letterpress method
That was in practice for about 100 years, from 1890 to 1980.
- [Narrator] Okay, so letterpress printing is when you
push raised metal types into the paper.
It is as if you are tattooing the book.
- [Narrator] And how does it work exactly?
The first thing you need to do is create a matrix (or mold).
Then, from the matrix, you cast individual letters.
Next, you assemble pieces of movable type, setting letter by letter and line by line into the frx.
Now,these assembled types are converted into a final fixed form, ready to use on the press.
And print on the papers.
Once pressing is done,we have the final product.
- [Narrator] And Korea actually has a long history of developing printing techniques,
including the letterpress, which is usually credited
to Johannes Gutenberg of Germany who introduced printing to Europe.
?
Jikji is? the oldest existing book printed with movable metal type,
And it was printed in 1377,70 years before Gutenberg.
- [Narrator] However, in the ’80''s, a new technology,
offset printing, took over as the industry standard.
A major difference between today’s offset printing technique and the leterpress method is you can print books a lot quicker and cheaper using offset printing,
But the books can’t stand the test of time.
And while letterpress may not make sense for most printing today, Park has found those who appreciate it as much as he does.
We run education programs for the public and for students.
You have to see and experience these books in person If you want to understand the true value of letterpress printing.

Europeans are constantly credited with inventions already done by other civilizations. It''s so frustrating that the history books haven''t been re-written to at least give some credit to innovators who came before.

The thing is, the printing techniques were invented far before Korean letters were created, Koreans always steal things that belong to other people smh
