As a foreigner residing in China, the experience of taking normal trains as opposed to taking speed train is beautiful in that one gets to experience friendship from total strangers. I learnt a lot of Chinese vocabularies from conversing with people I met on trains. It's a wonderful and worthwhile experience.

I took "T" train from Shanghai to Chengdu back in 2015 but I got soft sleeper, sharing with other 3 people, much more safe and clean.? Those passengers were very nice they gave me food even though I had mine.? Can't wait going back to China and taken more train rides fast or slow, the scenery are breathtaking beautiful.? Highly recommend to all foreign tourists.? Also, in China there is VIP waiting room if you are booking soft sleeper and much more comfortable seating there:=))

I took a similar train in Vietnam about 10 years ago, it took me more than 30 hours to go from Hanoi to Saigon. I know how it is!! Constantly switching from sitting to standing and lying down sometimes.

For anyway wondering, the train called Special Express seems not legit, but the name was gained back to 1990s, long before the high speed trains. Compare to other available services during the time, this is indeed the Special Express.

I took the 37hr slow train from shenzhen to Kunming. I enjoyed it. I read 4 books, and the train food was reasonably edible. There are also Western toilets somewhere on most trains btw

Despite its awesome it’s not really profitable. The US government can’t find somebody to invest this. Same with your subways and stuff. Chinese subway is also awesome. The ticket is like $1, it’s clean, high tech and fast.

We have sleeper trains in India .. nearly identical to the sleeper trains in China, but I have never experienced the hair thing in India. Not even something close (just eww!). The toilets however on China side are better than Indian side. I'm not trying to start a flame war, but just letting people know, real life experience that would help them. Love from India.

Get Wild and Tough but I’ve watched a documentary about the Chinese high speed train and they are developed based on the French high speed trains. The government paid a quite high fee in order to send selected engineers to France and learned and they bought some technologies etc. You can’t accuse others of stealing without proof.

You know what idiot journalist, every 5min, there will be one high speed train departure from Beijing to Shanghai. And also the high speed train network in China not only connecting the 1st line city, but also small towns! Third point, you chose 2nd class sleeper (hard sleeper) as a benchmark, which is not comparable at all. Because there are also 1st class sleeper (soft sleeper) and suite sleeper are available in normal express train in China! Forth point, the normal 2nd class high speed train ticket price in China is only 0.06USD/km, and the hard sleeper is only 0.04USD/km, you can never find such low price all over the world! You idiot Singapore journalist!
