? ? ?The first thing that had to be done, therefore, was to organise, with?the help and advice of SIS, a Dutch Secret Service in London. This?service, the 'Bureau Inlichtingen' (BI), established, at first with?considerable difficulty, permanent contact with the Dutch underground.?Quite early on, an agreement had been reached between the British?and the Dutch Secret Services which laid down the principles on which?the two services would co-operate, and delineated their?respective spheres of activity. The Dutch were responsible for the recruiting?of agents among Dutch nationals in England, while the?British, with their infinitely vaster resources, would train and equip?them, take care of their transport to Holland and maintain W/T communication?with them. They would be briefed jointly by the two?services in accordance with requirements of the customer departments,?which were in fact mostly British. The intelligence obtained would be?shared, though again, of course, only the British were in a position to?make operational use of it.

? ? ?By the time I joined P8, this arrangement had been working for?more than two years and a great number of agents had been trained?and sent to Holland. Several of them had been arrested by the?Germans and shot or sent to concentration camps, but new ones were?constantly being recruited and dispatched?to replace them. They were?usually sent in teams of two, a so-called organiser and his radio?operator. It was the task of the organiser to set up intelligence?networks with the help of contacts in the Dutch underground. The?radio operator ensured communication with Headquarters in London.

? ? ?One of the stipulations in the agreement between the two intelligence?services was that no British nationals should be sent to?Holland as agents. Many of the resistance groups were linked, one way?or another, to political groupings or personalities and both services?were anxious to avoid suspicions, easily aroused, that the British were in?any way trying to influence the post-war political settlement in the?Netherlands.

? ? ?This stipulation dashed my hopes of being sent back to Holland as?an agent. Instead, as Major Seymour explained, I was to act as?conducting officer to the young Dutch agents during their training?period. I would accompany them on their parachute course which was?why it was important that I should be able to jump myself. I was to?look after them during their training course in London, see to it that?they were happy, had all they required, take them out from time to?time to a restaurant or show and generally act as a friend. Finally I?would be responsible for checking that they had all their equipment and?the necessary false documents and accompany them to the airfield?on the night that they were dropped over Holland. As I spoke perfect?Dutch, had just come from Holland and been through similar?experiences as the boys I was to look after, Seymour thought I should?be well suited for the job.

? ? ?Major Seymour took me to an adjoining room, equally small and?attic like, to meet his second-in-command, Lieutenant-Commander?Child RNVR. This officer, an old?hand at Secret Service work, was in?charge of the agents' training programme and also looked after?supplies and equipment. I was to work directly under him. He was?big, burly and coarse-featured. In his crumpled uniform he looked?remarkably like the American film actor of the Thirties, Wallace Beery,?who generally played the rough diamond with the heart of gold. Later,?I discovered that under his rough exterior Commander Child did?indeed hide a kind disposition and a readiness to help others, as well as?an extremely astute business head. When?he got up to shake hands with me, I noticed that he had a wooden leg.

? ? ?Unlike most SIS officers, who come from an upper-middle-class?background, Commander Child was the son of a Deal fisherman, and?went to sea before the mast when he was fifteen. After years of service in?the Merchant Navy, during which he got his master's certificate, he found?himself in the years of the great slump as a skipper of private?yachts, taking their wealthy owners along the Dutch waterways and?up the Rhine. In this way, he got to know Holland and Germany well,?learned to speak Dutch and above all established a wide acquaintance-ship among Dutch and German bargees. This made him a valuable?contact for the SIS station in The Hague in the years when Germany?was rearming.

? ? ?At the outbreak of war, being a member of the Royal Naval?Reserve, he joined the staff of the station under cover of a lieutenant-commander in the Naval Attache's office. While carrying out a missions?in the first days of the invasion of Holland, his car was?attacked by German parachutists who had landed between The Hague?and the Hook of Holland. He was seriously wounded and was taken to hospital?where his leg had to be amputated. Enjoying diplomatic?cover, he was interned after his recovery by the Germans, together?with other British diplomats who had been caught by the sudden?German onslaught. For two years they lived in a hotel somewhere in?the Harz mountains and then were exchanged, via the Portuguese?territory of Lourenco Marques, for German diplomats whom the?outbreak of war had stranded in various parts of the British Empire.

? ? ?My first job that day was to accompany Commander Child to Hans?Place, where in a large flat the wireless training school was housed, to?collect two transmitters. The agents who had been practising on them?were to be dropped over Holland during the coming new moon?period. Their set had to be packed in containers to be despatched with?them. In my zeal as a neophyte I nearly dropped one, and I remember?the Commander saying to me, 'Take it easy, son. We are not over?Holland yet.' From then on he would frequently call me 'son',?strengthening the Wallace Beery impression.
