Others believe we are more and more independent.

People have opposite views in terms of whether we are independent or not.

Both of the opinions have its reasons and I will address respectively.

Undeniably, the world where we are living now is called global village with implications that we are more deeply intertwined with each other than how it used to be.

Take people doing international business to illustrate.

Global enterprises are those who set up branches in different countries for the sake of promoting their sales.

They import raw materials some countries whereas manufacture in others, trying to reduce the overall cost and sell in a global scale.

Beyond international corporation in business, people in academia is similar.

Global conferences in different disciplines are hold every year to boost information exchange and this will generate breakthroughs in science

In this sense, the world as well as human beings are reliant on each other. ?

Despite the argument above, another feature of current world is isolation and division.

The job market, for instance, is highly segmented so that as long as people accomplish their assignment, they can be paid.

In other words, what people should do is to take care of themselves both in their work and in their private life, without the necessity to put an emphasis on others.

Further more, internet and its ramification have victimized/trapped people into a secluded virtual world where people do not connect offline.

Additionally, industrialization and urbanization aggravate this situation.

With an increasing number of rural people migrating to big cities for living, traditional bondage within a big family has lessened. Core family has become the main mode in big cities.

As a result, people can feed themselves by their expertise and diligence instead of being subsidized by their big family

In closing, on one hand ,collaboration is indispensable and ubiquitous ; on the other ,individuals are self reliant .How to be independent in this dependent world is a challenge for every individual.
