316S31 (1.4401) is 17% chromium 12% nickel austenitic stainless steel. The overall corrosion resistance is very good, superior to 304 stainless steel, but the addition of 2% molybdenum also enhances the resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride and halide containing environments. 316S31 (1.4401), sometimes called "marine grade stainless steel", is actually not very resistant to warm sea water.
Usually supplied in annealed state, the grade can be formed by rolling, stamping, drawing and upsetting, and any hot working is carried out between 1149-1260 ° C. It can also be connected by most standard welding techniques using matching electrodes. Stress relief annealing is recommended to resist internal stress after cold working or restore corrosion resistance after welding.
