The topic of NCSE craze has become one of the most heated around the Chinese society at present. A saying "Hordes of soldiers and horses cross a single-log bridge", which is used to describe the fierce competition in the National College Entrance Exam (NCEE) / National Matriculation Entrance Test (NMET) (known as "Gaokao"), also fits for the status quo of the NCSE (4), and only?goes beyond when compared with the craze for NCEE/NMET, postgraduade entrance exams and studying overseas, it is even safe to say that today China's number-one exam is more of the NCSE than?the NCEE/NMET. One major reason for the NCSE craze by college graduates is that a job as a civil servant offers a high stability over jobs in other fields, together with well-established welfare systems, also higher salaries in comparison, which make civil servants a dream job for fairly a large number of young people, widely known as "The Iron Rice Bowl." While those having secured the job as a civil servant after surviving numerous rounds of exams and eliminations usually call themselves finally "landed ashore."(3)
