Eggs before Easter at Station Road/CVNP
The pair at the CVP/Station Road/Rt. 82 Bridge site is on eggs as of this week! We have determined by their behavior that they are covering eggs at the chosen nest site, and they have done some exchanging on the eggs, though they are not yet fully incubating. The female wouldn't leave the site today when Zen looked to relieve her, so she may be completing her egg laying and full incubation appears imminent this weekend. This is a very full album with a variety of behavior that we've been seeing with this pair over the last couple weeks. We wanted to whittle it down more, but also hoped to provide a complete update, so there are more images than we intend to post in one album... The female "with egg", bulky, distended abdomen, and clearly ready to lay earlier this week...
Zen zipping around-- he has shown increased exuberance driving out neighboring and migrating raptors as the pair has started exchanging on eggs, covering and protecting the nest...
From the distance we can get a glimpse into the chosen nest site, with the female standing in the nest here. When either one is lying down they can be very difficult to see and it just looks "clumpy" when they are facing away...
We got to see both Zen and his mate at the river briefly on Tuesday. He flew to a rock island down river and took a few drinks, but was very watchful of his surroundings...
Zen walked in a bit...
...and turned and looked to walk in a bit more, looking like he might try to bathe. But he ended up taking off when someone came around the bend walking a large dog...
Zen flying up from the river rocks past the bank...
On the same day, the female looked to go to the river after Zen left. She perched and waited for her chance (showing rear "puffiness" here)...
She coasted down, checking out her options on the river...
...flying over the water with her bulky "belly bump" shape...
...she landed on the rock island briefly...
...but in this case there were too many raptors soaring overhead and she didn't stay, flying off low...
...and she continued low over the river and flew back up into the bridge...
Zen with a prepped prey piece to give to his mate...
The female in flight...
We've mentioned that all of the peregrines have been preying on killdeer, and we've seen Zen nab many of these cool, but abundant birds lately...
Zen zipping in with a killdeer...
A couple mating shots, here flying up and onto her...
...and just one mating pic...
Zen looking regal in flight...
Here Zen took off and had that pre-hunt energy, reaching for and grabbing this branch as he flew by...
The pair has become increasingly defensive as they start to nest. Here Zen went after a distant turkey vulture...
...tagging the TV and literally "pushing him out" of the area...
And here's the female chasing out a young red-shouldered hawk...
Zen flying up to mate with the female as she was mostly out of view... the careful turning of his feet inward, and lining up of his tarsi is still evident...
...and a "back-dive" after mating...
Zen with prey remains...
Zen (left) delivering the prey to his mate after she flew up to get it...
...and then she took off with the prey piece...
Zen with the sycamore tree as his backdrop...
Zen in flight with sycamore behind...
The female "stepping out"...
Zen with another killdeer...
...flying up with the killdeer...
Zen speeding in with another killdeer...
...lifting his head to check for any potential disruptions (i.e. other raptors)...
The female resting comfortably on a lower branch by the river...
Zen zooming in again with prey, this time he starling (he gave the killdeers a break)...
Zen flying up to land with the starling...
Zen...
One final shot of Zen with a prey piece... "Here's looking at YOU, kid!"
