3.2. OPTIONAL What Are Layers
P19 - 00:03?
Welcome. In this lecture, i'll explain what layers are and why they're useful in photoshop. If you already understand this subject, feel Free to skip to the next lecture as this is oriented towards beginners. To help you understand this concept, i've opened up this PSD that you have attached to this lecture. ?
You can think of layers as transparent pieces of paper that stack on Top of each other. Each layer is an opportunity to create something new.?
If you look at this project, you can see we have several layers In this panel. We have a background where the frame all this text and so on.?
When you look at the project from this perspective, all these individual pieces of transparent paper are stacked on Top of each other.?
So what you end up with is a canvas that looks like a flat image.?
If I were to hide these layers panel, would you be able to tell how many components this project has? Of course not. ?
It looks like one single image, but if we open up this other PSD, we can see the true story.?

Here I illustrated how this project would look if you were to see it from the side.?
This perspective shows us the truth. Each individual piece of paper, meaning each layer has something different on it.?
This first one shows the background. The next contains the frame.?
The 3rd one showcase is the piece of paper, and so on. When you bring them close together,?
you can see the end result is very similar to what we see in our other tab.?
Let's go back to it. You may be wondering why the trouble? Well, let's get the brush tool by pressing b.?
If you're not sure you've got it, go to your tool bar, click and hold, and you'll activate it. ?
Now with white as my foreground color, i'll start to paint on the background there. You can tell it's selected because photoshop highlights it.?
As you can see, nothing happens with my frame or anything else.?
And that's because even though this looks like a solid image, it's actually composed out of several layers,?
because I have my background where selected It. My change is going to affect it and only it.?
press CTRL z to undo. If I switch to the paper layer and I repeat my brushing, you'll see it seems like my woodland was compromised, but that's not the case.?
If we switch to the move tool by pressing v,?
we can see it's safe and sound.?
It seems like it was affected because each layer is transparent.?
Photoshop works this way from CS three. And the reason is simple.?
It gives you more freedom. If you slave away for hours on end to create this perfect background, you don't want it ruined by a slip up. ?
So instead of risking all your work, you create a new layer that will sit on Top of your existing project. And you can continue without worry.?
This gives you a lot of flexibility, because you can isolate each element,?
press CTRL z again to undo. how many layers you create is up to you.?
And we'll talk more about that in the upcoming lectures. One important notice, before we wrap up. the order of these layers matters.?

If I bought in this background layer above the paper,?
you'll no longer see it. Indeed, they are transparent pieces of paper. But I chose to completely fill this background layer with color, hence why it's no longer transparent.?
So you have to be careful with your stacking order In the layers’ panel.?
we will discuss this subject in greater detail in this section. Okay? That wraps it up. I hope players are no longer a mystery to you.?
Let's continue.?

??
3.3. Start Using Layers
P20 - 00:00?
Hey, guys. Let's talk about how you can work with layer effectively. Let's start with a blank canvas, and then we'll move to another tab.?
The first thing you may want to do is delete this background. It's currently locked, but it allows partial editing.?
I can paint over it. I can erase parts of it, but I can't move it.?
Plus, maybe you want a transparent background to begin with. The command to remove a layer is the delete key on windows or the backspace key on a MAC. ?
You can press it, but you'll notice nothing happens. And that's because photoshop needs at least one layer In any project.?
It can be an empty layer, but you can't have a project with nothing inside this panel.?
So let's add one from the bottom right side. This is the icon that creates a new layer. click once on a new one has just popped up.?
Now I can switch to this other one and delete it, even though it bears the lock icon.?
Great. If you don't want to move your mouse cursor all the way down, you can use the hot key CTRL shift n to create new layer. ?

This does the same thing, but it also shows you this window through which you can adjust various settings.?
My advice is to click on this small icon, since it's faster,?
your project should be properly organized. So let's double click its name. Now it's selected. You can write whatever you want.?
This is how you rename all layers in photoshop. What's nice is that you can give multiple layers the same title. And photoshop won't complain.?
Please note that if you double click anywhere outside its name, you'll get this pop up window. If that's the case, press escape and try again. This usually happens if your name has very few characters.?
Same thing applies. If you click twice on its thumbnail,?
this isn't what you're looking for. Okay. Let's switch tabs.?
on this lovely image. I want to add a message in this Top right corner.?
And that begs the question, when is it the right time to create a new layer.?
bear with me, As i'll explain in a second. First i'll write something with my brush tool.?
Please don't focus on the actual techniques, as the point of this lecture is to use layers effectively. ?
Now I have this hand written message, but also adds some hearts into the mix. Nothing special. I'm just doing it here. Finally. I'll add some random lines to further embellish this area.?
Now I'm done, but I'm not happy. I'd like to change the colour of my hearts and have this last word written in another style.?
See the problem? Because I didn't create another layer. I am now stuck.?
Furthermore, I also permanently marked this image because I performed all my edits directly on it.?
That's bad practice. And you should always avoid adjustments this way.?
If I try to erase my work, look what happens that does more harm.?
Press f 12 to revert back to the original project. ?
Here’s how you should approach things. first. It's best you have an idea about what you want to do. You don't need to be precise, but you should have at least a general direction in mind.?
Based on that, you can make some key decisions regarding when it's best to create a new layer.?
I'll do that now.And i'll write my message.?
I have my first part done, but i'll create a new one for the last word.?
Notice something here. It all depends on what I want to do. If I wanted ultra flexibility, I could have placed each word on its own layer.?
I consider that overkill. But if you do want maximum flexibility, then feel Free to do that. ?
Also, in case I didn't want to change the colour of this last part, I could have left everything on one single layer.?
So nobody can give you a specific definitive guide on when it's best to create a new one.?
It depends on what you want to do and how much freedom you want to have in your project.?
For my three hearts, i'll definitely add them on a different layer.?
In general, separate components should be placed on different layers. ?
This is obviously another element that is not directly connected to my handwriting.?
So it makes sense. We put it on its own layer. Again, a question. Do I want them to be treated as a whole??

Or do I want to style them individually??
If you ask yourself these types of questions, things will go much smoother.?
Let's go with the latter option. I want to edit them later, but not as a whole.?
Thus I will create three different layers. Please note this highlight. ?
This shows you your active layer. When it's time to move to a new one, simply click on it, and you'll see that that layer is now highlighted.?
This means your drawings won't interfere with each other. Please take a moment and rename all layers.?
Finally, i'll create one last prayer for my squiggle lines.?
This is a bit random, but it does make my point. Now, through various techniques, I can adjust my work without affecting everything else.?
I can change this hot color, but nothing is happening with the other tool. perfect.?
I can erase this last word and write something different.?
This is how you should work with your layers.?
Use them to gain as much freedom and flexibility as you want.?
One piece of advice is never leave your layers on end. If you want to let every component individually, then please take the time to rename them. If you don't do that, you'll be in a world of trouble.?
Now that we have a few layers in our project, it's time we talk about another concept groups.?
If you think about your operating system, when you install a new program, you create a folder for it.?
That's because all those files go together and you don't wanna miss placed.?
It's the same thing in photoshop. These three hearts are related to each other. So let's group them. ?
Here’s how I recommend you do that. You hold down the CTRL or command key, and you click on their names.?
Once they are all selected, press CTRL g. Now you've just created your first folder.?
Don't worry. Your layers haven't been deleted. They've been moved inside this group.?
If you click on this arrow, you'll see they're safe and sound.?
Ctrl g is easy to remember because g stands for group.?

If you want to get rid of it, you shouldn't use delete, because that will trash these layers as well. ?
Instead, you should right click it. And this list will appear. Hit ungroup layers, and you're good to go.?
And it's the same story with groups. You create as many as you want. In general, you should have at least two layers inside. Otherwise it doesn't make much sense.?
But here's what you can do. Create a group for these hearts. Please rename it. Now select everything except for the background and group again.?
Now you have a folder inside a folder, and you can continue with that line.?
But i'd say more than three levels will slow you down rather than help you.?
These are called nested groups, as you can imagine. By having everything together. It's very easy to reposition them, to edit them in all sorts of ways.?
It just makes your life easier. Just look at how simple it is to play around with my entire composition. Grouping layers is an essential part of getting the most out of your project. ?

Ok, that concludes this lecture. Go ahead and open the PSD and have some fun with it.?

??
3.4. Use the Layers Panel
P21 - 00:01?
Hi, the layers panel is essential for any project in photoshop. Let me show you a few things that will dramatically improve your workflow.?
We already talked about creating layers and groups. So let's dig a little deeper. ?
So you're not familiar with this project. And you want to know what's inside these three folders.?
You could do it manually. But what if this project had 50 fold well down. here's my tip.?
Before you click on any closed group, hold down control, and it will expand them simultaneously.?
As you see, all three have now opened up. But notice there are two other folders here that are still closed.?
That's because this command only works on first level groups. ?
Still, it's a neat trick, and it works the other way around. Hold control again, and this will collapse all three.?
easy stuff. If you really want to expand everything. Here is how you do it.?
Hold CTRL and ALT while you click. Now those level two groups are opened as well.?
Use the same command to collapse them.?

Another interesting feature in our last panel is this eye symbol. This controls the layers of visibility.?
?Say I only want to work on the wright flyer on the left one is distracting me.?
Not a problem. Simply click on the folder eye icon and it will disappear.?
It's not deleted it. its hidden.?
Notice all the layers inside this group have great out icons on their left side.?
That's because you can't make a lot of visible. if it's inside a hidden folder.?
And that makes sense. Look at what happens if I try to enable the visibility of the first layer inside this folder. This will activate the eye icon for the group, because photoshop understands I want to work on it.?
That's something to be aware of.moving forward. You can toggle any layers visibility.?
What's nice is that you can hold down your left mouse click and scroll up or down.?
This is how you can easily hide a bunch of layers with little to no effort.?
The same thing applies vice versa. If you want to reveal them,?
but say your project is huge. Maybe it has hundreds of layers. How can you hide everything except one particular layer or folder? ?

Well, here's the trick. Hold down ALT or option and click on the layer or folder. You want to remain visible.?
And there you go. Everything is now hidden. And if you click again, everything will be revealed.?
I know this is a lot of Information, but don't worry. I've created a nice cheat sheet. You can check it out anytime you want to refresh your memory.?
Let's continue with another useful piece of Information. Some layers go together more than others. ?
For example, if I disable this Top one, we can see the following texture base and shadow base.?
A friendly reminder, please disable the auto select feature. If you haven't done so already,?
activate the move tool and focus on the Top left side of the screen specifically on the action bar. Make sure the box is unchecked.?
Otherwise you will have a different experience. If I move each of them to the side, we can see that form one important component on my canvas.?

We could group them together. But here's an alternative.?
We can create a link between them by using a command from our layers panel.?
I’ll select all three of them. And i'll focus on the bottom of this panel.?
This very first icon, this chain represents the command link layers.?
One side click it. You'll notice the same icon has appeared next to each layer. ?
Now I can select only one layer, say the base, and I can move it to the side and all the other ones should follow suit.?
Oops, we have a problem. It seems there was another element that was related to this component.?
It's this folder called texture shadow. Not a problem. I'll selected along with any one of these three layers. I don't need to get all four together.?
If you select one layer that is already linked,?
that's going to be enough to create the connection between all four. Great. ?
Let’s try this again. Yup, perfect. They all move together.?
If you want to unlink a certain layer, just right click it.?

from this list. Look for unlink layer. Now, this is independent, but the other one is still connected.?
If you want to break that chain, select them all and click on this icon at the bottom of the layers panel.?
Finally, I want to show you a few ways to duplicate any layer group. The method I use most is through the hockey control j.?
Let's test it out on this Top group. Ok. New folders appeared, and it's called left fly a copy.?
I'll move it on the campus so you can see it better.?
Let me apply the same command CTRL j on any layer.?
There you go. Here it is. Okay. Let's delete. So I can show you another option.?
Hold down your ALT key and drag this group anywhere in your layers panel. Wherever you release. That's where photoshop will create a duplicate. Here it is.?
The great thing about this option is that you can perform it on the canvas as well. Select one layer where you want to copy, say this one. Now in your work area, I will hold alt and drag. this way. I'm hitting two birds with one stone. I am replicating this layer, but I'm also repositioning it.?

Let go of your mouse click. And that's it. Feel Free to test it out.?
The last option, the 1 I discourage is you right click inside the layers panel. from this list, choose duplicate layer. A new window will appear asking you for the new layers name as well as its location, meaning inside the document or in a new one. hit okay and it does the same thing. ?
My advice is you stick with CTRL j or the old drag technique.?
Okay. This wraps up this lecture, but stay tuned for the next one, because it is closely related to this subject.?

?
3.5. Select Layers
P22 - 00:01?
