德國(guó)馬克斯?普朗克研究所(Max Planck Institute)化學(xué)生態(tài)學(xué)研究所自然產(chǎn)物生物合成系Prof. O’Connor課題組現(xiàn)有博士職位可申請(qǐng),學(xué)制四年,主要研究藥用植物中生物堿的生物合成、進(jìn)化和工程,2022年10月入職。
About the project
Plants produce countless chemically diverse natural products, or specialized metabolites. Alkaloids are a type of natural product that are widely used as medicines. If we discover the biosynthetic genes and enzymes that are responsible for the production of these medicinally important alkaloids, then we can use synthetic biology or engineering approaches to enable better access to these medicines. Ipecac alkaloids have been widely used pharmacological agents for many years. Interestingly, these compounds occur in two evolutionary distant plants suggesting that the biosynthetic pathways evolved independently; in other words, nature developed two different biosynthetic pathways for these molecules.
The aim of this PhD project is to discover the genes of the biosynthetic pathways of ipecac alkaloids in these two distantly related medicinal plant species. Then, the pathways can be compared, contrasted, and recombined using state of the art plant-based production platforms. The PhD candidate will use cutting edge metabolomics and transcriptomics approaches to identify enzyme candidates, screen for activities, characterize active enzymes in vitro and in vivo and reconstitute both natural and synthetic pathways.
Requirements
We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with training in biochemistry and molecular biology. Experience and good experimental skills in molecular techniques and mass spectrometry are an advantage. Knowledge about plant natural products, specialized metabolism or biochemistry is desirable but not essential. A Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Biotechnology or related disciplines is required for this position.

The Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology in Jena carries out fundamental research on how organisms communicate with each other via chemical signals. We analyze ecological interactions with molecular, chemical and neurobiological techniques. In the Institute, organic chemists, biochemists, ecologists, entomologists, behavioral scientists, insect geneticists and physiologists work in collaboration to unravel the complexity of chemical communication that occurs in nature.

A?4-year PhD position. Payment will be based on the tariff contracts for the public service (65% TV?D E13). We provide an excellent research environment with enthusiastic scientists from different nationalities in the department of Natural Product Biosynthesis led by Prof. S.E. O’Connor (www.sarahoconnor.org) at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology in Jena, Germany (www.ice.mpg.de). The PhD student will be associated with the International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS,?http://imprs.ice.mpg.de).

Dr. Yiliang Lin (林藝良) ,將于2022年12月入職新加坡國(guó)立大學(xué)化學(xué)生物工程系擔(dān)任助理教授。林博士2013年于浙江大學(xué)高分子科學(xué)與工程學(xué)系獲得學(xué)士學(xué)位;2018年于美國(guó)北卡羅萊納州立大學(xué)化學(xué)生物工程系獲得博士學(xué)位;2018年6月至今于芝加哥大學(xué)化學(xué)系從事博士后研究。林博士長(zhǎng)期致力于高分子材料、液態(tài)金屬、柔性電子器件、生物電子界面的研究。先后在Nature Chemistry、Nature Materials、Science Advances、Nature Communication、Chemical Review、Trends in Chemistry、Advanced Materials等國(guó)際頂級(jí)期刊發(fā)表學(xué)術(shù)論文30多篇。研究工作被UChicago News、Materials Today、Physics.org、Scientific American等多家科技媒體和學(xué)術(shù)雜志高亮報(bào)導(dǎo),另有部分成果被Chemical & Engineering News(ACS出版社)評(píng)為十大科研進(jìn)展。曾榮獲國(guó)家自費(fèi)留學(xué)獎(jiǎng)學(xué)金、Vivian T. About the project
Exploring the co-benefits of re-carbonizing soils for food and planet
Some soils across the planet have become degraded at alarming rates in recent decades and are cause for concern and intervention. Restoring and maintaining the health of our soils is therefore an urgent priority both for activity to protect and where possible improve food security and to mitigate the consequences of climate change. There are many approaches to improving soil value and key to these are an ambition on reversing impacts of soil degradation through replenishing soil organic matter levels, changing and where possible reducing cultivation activities and enhancing biodiversity and soil health through strategic, diverse and innovative crop rotations and in-field management. Recent research suggests the subtle interactions between a soil’s structure and the microbial community have a significant impact on the way a soil behaves. Evidence is accumulating that the complexity of the “diet” of plant materials incorporated into soil has a profound influence upon the functional diversity of soil microbiomes: soils provided more complex diets support greater functional diversity. This project will combine physical (X-ray imaging) and biological (metagenomics) techniques to help identify novel approaches to support climate efficient soil management with minimal environmental impact. It will address important questions including whether diversification of soil organic amendments is as effective as diverse crop rotations in supporting bio-physical aspects of soil health and can a more diverse agriculture approach have significant positive impacts on soil structure leading to reduced greenhouse gas emissions and improved crop yields. The studentship offers an opportunity to apply diverse technologies to develop new understanding of soil systems, appealing to anyone who enjoys challenging complexity and systems thinking.
The studentship will be based within the group at the University of Nottingham’s world-leading Hounsfield Facility (nottingham.ac.uk/microct)?at Sutton Bonington and involve collaboration with scientists at Rothamsted Research. BASF and Unilever will provide scientific input and excellent placement opportunities. The student will undertake a range of field and laboratory-based experiments where full training (as a beginner) will be provided opportunities to gain key skills across a wide range of interdisciplinary areas including in soil biology, plant-soil interactions, X-ray CT imaging and bioinformatics. The student will also be able to avail of the generic training courses offered by the University of Nottingham Graduate School and at Rothamsted Research.
Terms and Conditions:?
This studentship covers the UK tuition fee ONLY (£4,596 p.a.) and a tax-free stipend based on current UKRI rates (£16062p.a.).
