6月29日上午，猛然看到《英語(yǔ)世界》的這則消息，久久不能平靜：著名翻譯家張培基先生已陷入長(zhǎng)眠。

先生的著作是多少翻譯學(xué)習(xí)者心頭的明燈，其《英譯中國(guó)現(xiàn)代散文選》中的譯作，語(yǔ)言凝練地道，再現(xiàn)了原作的清新雋永，抑或是磅礴氣勢(shì)，將忠實(shí)、優(yōu)雅、傳神播撒在人間。

年輕時(shí)，先生還運(yùn)用其所長(zhǎng)，擔(dān)任《自由西報(bào)》（英文）記者、《中國(guó)評(píng)論周報(bào)》（The China Critic）特約撰稿、《中國(guó)年鑒》（英文）副總編等職務(wù)。在之后的東京審判中，張培基先生在通過(guò)測(cè)試后，被錄用為遠(yuǎn)東國(guó)際軍事法庭的英文翻譯，工作時(shí)長(zhǎng)共計(jì)2年7個(gè)月。

斯人已逝，薪火相傳，生生不息。今天，讓我們通過(guò)回顧其部分經(jīng)典譯作，來(lái)深切緬懷張培基先生。

National Crisis vs Heroic Nation

歷史的道路，歷史的道路，不會(huì)是坦平的，有時(shí)走到艱難險(xiǎn)阻的境界。這是全靠雄健的精神才能沖過(guò)去的。

The course of history is never smooth. It is sometimes beset with difficulties and obstacles and nothing short of a heroic spirit can help surmount them.

一條浩浩蕩蕩的長(zhǎng)江大河，有時(shí)流到很寬闊的境界，平原無(wú)際，一瀉萬(wàn)里。有時(shí)流到很逼狹的境界，兩岸叢山迭嶺，絕壁斷崖，江河流于期間，回環(huán)曲折，極其險(xiǎn)峻。民族生命的進(jìn)展，其經(jīng)歷亦復(fù)如是。

A mighty long river sometimes flows through a broad section with plains lying boundless on either side, its waters rolling on non-stop for thousands upon thousands of miles. Sometimes it comes up against a narrow section flanked by high mountains and steep cliffs, winding through a course with many a perilous twist and turn. A nation, in the course of its development, fares likewise.

On Men

男人令人首先感到的印象是臟！當(dāng)然，男人當(dāng)中亦不乏刷洗干凈潔身自好的，甚至還有油頭粉面衣冠楚楚的，但大體講來(lái)，男人消耗肥皂和水的數(shù)量要比較少些，某一男校，對(duì)于學(xué)生洗澡是強(qiáng)迫的，入浴簽名，每周計(jì)核，對(duì)于不曾入浴的初步懲罰是宣布姓名，最后的斷然處置是定期強(qiáng)迫入浴，并派員監(jiān)視，然而日久玩生，簽名簿中尚不無(wú)浮冒情事。

What strikes us first of all in men is their uncleanliness . There are of course no lack of men who always make a point of keeping the themselves spick-and-span. And some of them even make up heavily and dress respectably. But, generally speaking, men consume a smaller quantity of soap and water than women. A certain boys" school make it compulsory for its students to take a bath regularly. Every student had to sign his name before taking a bath so that the school authorities could conduct a weekly checkup. Those who violated the regulation for the first time would have their names published. The drastic measure for those who repeat the offence was to force them to take a bath regularly under surveillance. Nevertheless abuses crept in with time. Forgery was often discovered among the signatures.

對(duì)了！男人懶。他可以懶洋洋坐在旋倚上，五官四肢，連同他的腦筋(假如有)，一概停止活動(dòng)，像呆鳥一般：“不聞夫博奔者乎……”那段話是專對(duì)男人說(shuō)的。他若是上街買東西，很少時(shí)候能令他的妻子滿意，他總是不肯多問(wèn)幾家，怕跑腿，怕費(fèi)話，怕講價(jià)錢。什么事他都嫌麻煩，除了指使別人替他做的事之外。他像殘廢人一樣，對(duì)于什么事都愿坐享其成，而名之曰“室家之樂(lè)”。

Indeed, men are lazy. You will find them lolling in a revolving chair, dumb like a wooden chicken, their five sense organs, their four limbs as well as their brain (if any) all at a complete standstill. What Confucius says all about those who eat their fill all day without doing any work obviously refers to men exclusively. When men go shopping, their wives are seldom satisfied with their purchases because they never bother to shop around never bother to do more walking and talking, never bother to bargain over prices. They hate to be bothered about anything except that which is to be done on their behalf by others. Like disabled persons they will sit idle to enjoy the fruits of other"s labour. And they call all that "domestic bliss"!

Fog

霧遮沒(méi)了正對(duì)著后窗的一帶山峰。

The mountain peaks directly facing the back window of my room were veiled in fog.

我還不知道這些山峰叫什么名兒。我來(lái)此的第一夜就看見(jiàn)那最高的一座山的頂巔像鉆石裝成的寶冕似的燈火。那時(shí)我的房里還沒(méi)有電燈，每晚上在暗中默坐，凝望這半空的一片光明，使我記起了兒時(shí)所讀的童話。實(shí)在的呢，這排列得很整齊的依稀分為三層的火球，襯著黑魆魆的山峰的背景，無(wú)論如何，是會(huì)引起非人間的縹緲的思想的。

The names of these mountain peaks are still unknown to me. The first night when I was there I had seen the top of the highest mountain shining with lights like a precious crown set with diamond. As there was no electric light in my room, all I could do in the evening was sit quietly in the dark and fix my eyes on the midair radiance, which reminded me of the fairy tales I had read in my childhood. Indeed, the orderly array of lights shining in three indistinct tiers one above another against a background of dark mountain peaks could conjure up, without fail, visions of the ethereal.

The Lane

巷，是城市建筑藝術(shù)中一篇飄逸恬靜的散文，一幅古雅沖淡的圖畫。

The lane, in terms of the art of urban architecture, is like a pieceof prose of gentle gracefulness or a painting of classic elegance andsimplicity.

這種巷，常在江南的小城市中，有如古代的少女，躲在僻靜的深閨，輕易不肯拋頭露面。你要在這種城市里住久了，和它真正成了莫逆，你才有機(jī)會(huì)看見(jiàn)她，接觸到她優(yōu)嫻貞靜的風(fēng)度。它不是鄉(xiāng)村的陋巷，湫隘破敗，泥濘坎坷，雜草亂生，兩旁還排列著錯(cuò)落的糞缸。它不是上海的里弄，鱗次櫛比的人家，擁擠得喘不過(guò)氣；小販憧憧來(lái)往，黝暗的小門邊，不時(shí)走出一些趿著拖鞋的女子，頭發(fā)亂似臨風(fēng)飛舞的秋蓬，眼睛里網(wǎng)滿紅絲，臉上殘留著不調(diào)和的隔夜脂粉，頹然地走到老虎灶上去提水。也不像北地的胡同，滿目塵土，風(fēng)起處刮著彌天的黃沙。

Often tucked away in a small town south of the Yangtse River, thelane, like a maiden of ancient times hidden away in a secluded boudoir, isreluctant to make its appearance in public. You’ll never have an opportunity tosee it and savour its gentle poise until you have become truly attached to thesmall town after living there for a long time. The lane has nothing in commonwith the mean rural alleys, which are narrow and low-lying, muddy and bumpy,overgrown with wild weeds and lined here and there with manure vats. Nor has itanything in common with linong (meaning alleys) in Shanghai, which areliterally packed with dwellings and their residents. Over there, you’ll seevendors hawking their wares here and there. From time to time, women are seenemerging from inside some dingy small gates and shuffling languidly in theirslippers towards a laohuzao, the shop specializing in selling boiled water,their hair disheveled like wind-blown withered grass in autumn, their eyesblood-shot, their faces betraying traces of overnight make-up. Nor has the laneanything in common with hutong (also meaning alleys) in north China, which aredusty on every side, especially when a wind rises.
