Voting is very important and matters a lot to politics. Voting is the activity of choosing someone or something in an election. A voting age is a minimum age established by law that a person must attain before they become eligible to vote in a public election. In this debate, We stand Pro, and we want to lower the voting age to 16. We believe that If we can prove in this debate that lowering the voting age can help the society grow, we win.?
The growth of young people
According to the Fairvote website, The Young people have adult responsibilities, but are denied the same rights. People under 18 are contributing and active members of society. Millions of us are employed and volunteer in our communities. Many people under 18 also have “adult” responsibilities – such as being the primary caregiver for an ailing family member, running a business, and making substantial financial contributions to our households. At first glance, many assume that 16-year-olds are unable to make mature and informed decisions about voting, that they will not turn out to vote, or that they will just vote the way their parents tell them to. But this is not true. At age 16, citizens can drive, pay taxes, and for the first time work without any restriction on hours. They are independent and some of them are already living on their own in their high school.
Many of the habits that people develop during the ages of 16 and 17 become a routine part of their adult life. It is the experiences that teens choose that make it easier for them to develop healthy habits in the future.?when unable to vote until turning 18, some citizens won’t have a chance to vote for their mayor until they are almost 22.?
II.Beneficial to Politics
According to the National Youth Rights Association,?People under 18 have already participated in politics by forming Political Action Committees, managing campaigns, advocating for our rights in front of legislative bodies, and becoming grassroots activists. And even though we are not allowed to vote, young people are able to contribute just as much money to a political campaign as adults. In fact, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that banning people under 18 from this part of the political process actually violates our First Amendment rights. This proves that young people have the ability to politics and can hold responsibilities, therefore it would not be harmful for them to vote.
Research indicates that there is a “trickle up” effect on civic participation. When 16- and 17-year-olds engage in civics, conversations about politics and local issues are brought to the dinner table. Parents and family members are engaged in civic life through the 16- and 17-year-olds in their household, with a positive impact on voter turnout for people of all ages.
Young people have a right to be heard and to have our interests taken seriously. However, by disenfranchising young people society tells us that we do not have anything of value to add to the political conversations in our society. It also gives politicians permission to ignore our interests as people under 18 have no way to hold their representatives accountable.
This is especially concerning since there are certain issues, such as environmental degradation, public education policy, long-term government debt, corporal punishment laws, and poverty that impact young people more than anyone else. Younger people may also be better in tune with modern issues around internet privacy and social media use. By adding their perspectives to the political debates, these young people could shift the structure of polarization that has crept into global politics. When you have more voices and ideas available to you as a society, then you have more access to innovation.
In conclusion, a vote for our side is a vote for a world where the voting age would be lowered to sixteen. We have successfully proved to you that lowering the voting age would be helping the society grow, and please give the Pro a ballot.
