PhD student in motion planning for autonomous systems
We are looking for a PhD student in?motion planning for autonomous systems with placement at the Division of Automatic control.

Your work assignments
The research conducted within the area of automatic control at Link?ping University includes subareas such as learning control, optimization, robotics and autonomous systems, and sensor fusion. We are now announcing a PhD student position targeting research within the next generation of motion planning algorithms for autonomous systems, a position funded by the strategic research environment ELLIIT. The goal of the research in the project is to develop algorithms, with associated theory, which have considerably higher computational performance than those that are known as state-of-the-art today and which can solve even more challenging problems. An important research direction to reach our goal is to try to challenge the classical hierarchical solution and, inspired by MPC, instead tightly integrate planning, replanning, and motion execution. The expected results of the project have high relevance for both safety of autonomous vehicles as well as improved energy efficiency.
We plan to apply for affiliation of this PhD student position to the WASP research program in AI, autonomous systems and software, which would provide access to its graduate school’s courses as well as opportunities for networking. As a PhD student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.

Your qualifications
You have graduated at Master’s level in electrical engineering, computer science, applied mathematics, engineering physics, mechatronics, or similar with excellent grades.
It is expected that you have very good oral and written proficiency in English. Furthermore, it is necessary with a strong interest in and motivation for performing high-quality research. You are expected to have excellent abilities in mathematics, in particular the directions of optimization, dynamical systems, and automatic control. Good programming skills, in Python and C++ in particular, is considered important for this position. Moreover, documented work in software development where the result has been released at, e.g., github will be considered to have a high merit value. Also, to have authored a Master’s thesis of high quality in the area of the advertised position will be considered meritorious.

The employment
When taking up the post, you will be admitted to the program for doctoral studies. More information about the doctoral studies at each faculty is available at?Doctoral studies at Link?ping University.
The employment has a duration of four years’ full-time equivalent. You will initially be employed for a period of one year. The employment will subsequently be renewed for periods of maximum duration two years, depending on your progress through the study plan. The employment may be extended up to a maximum of five years, based on the amount of teaching and departmental duties you have carried out. Further extensions can be granted in special circumstances.
The salary of PhD students is determined according to a locally negotiated salary progression.

Research project
Applications are invited for a PhD position at Ghent University in the field of Children's Literature. The research project on which the PhD candidate will be employed is supervised by Prof. Dr. Elly McCausland. Candidates are invited to propose their own project, which must be in the field of children’s literature, and combine theoretical inquiry with textual analysis. Possible topics include, but are not limited to, children’s literature and the environment; young adult dystopia; adaptations of canonical texts for children; medievalism in children’s literature; nineteenth-century children’s literature; representations of risk and adventure in children’s literature; play in children’s literature; fantasy and fairytale.

Job profile
Candidates should have:
a Master’s degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant field, such as English Literary Studies or Comparative Literature (candidates near to completion may also submit applications, indicating the expected date of the degree);
an outstanding record of undergraduate and Master’s-level work;
research experience in one or more of the relevant fields;
excellent writing and speaking skills in English.

Conditions of employment?
The position begins 1 November 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter.
The applicant will be based at Ghent University, as the project is funded by Ghent University’s Special Research Fund (BOF).
The successful applicant will be appointed for two years. After a positive evaluation, the position will be extended for another two years.

Project
The Fraunhofer branch ?Translational Neuroinflammation and Automated Microscopy? TNM in G?ttingen is part of the Fraunhofer Institute for Translational Medicine and Pharmacology ITMP.?
The department ?High Resolution and Automated Microscopy? focuses on the application and automation of super-resolution fluorescence microscopy techniques for drug discovery.?
Modern super-resolution microscopy techniques such as STED microscopy allow us to analyze protein distributions on the nanometer scale. With this technology, previously unknown changes in the structure and protein clusters within patient cells can be investigated. Automatized image data acquisition allows the recording of large collections of microscopy image data under a multitude of conditions in drug discovery screens. The resulting data must be analyzed in a statistically robust manner in order to isolate relevant features that indicate changes in the pathological state of a disease. Our department aims to combine these methods (super-resolution microscopy, efficient automated recordings and statistical data analysis) for a better understanding of cellular changes in cancer and central nervous system diseases. We want to detect neurodegenerative diseases earlier and help design drug screenings that will be able to identify new therapies for diseases.

What you will do
Create and extend our software to automatically and efficiently record model samples with super-resolution microscopes
Apply statistical analyses to quantify the differences between ordinary and pathological processes, with special emphasis on the use of machine learning, and identification of data features that can be used as meaningful quantitative measures in pharmaceutical research
Establish automated pipelines utilizing machine learning and statistical analysis algorithms to process previously collected high-throughput microscopy data
Compare and integrate existing pharmaceutical datasets with results obtained from automated microscopy
Day-to-day work in an interdisciplinary and international environment
Support for various interesting cooperation partners from industry and medicine
Due to our collaboration with the University of G?ttingen, PhD students have the opportunity to participate in one of several PhD programs.

What you bring to the table
High motivation and a strong interest to work in applied research, the interface between mathematics, computer science medicine, and industry.
Further requirements for PhD students:
Master’s or equivalent degree in bioinformatics, computer science, mathematics, physics, or a related field
Strong programming skills (Python, Matlab, R etc.)
Experience with machine learning
A strong background in statistical analysis
Proficiency in English (written and spoken)
