Despite the company's early initiatives into AI about a decade ago, Facebook’s parent company, Meta, is now playing catch-up with its competitors such as OpenAI, Microsoft, and Google. This has been triggered by the release of ChatGPT, a new development in AI that led to a massive realization within the industry.
Reacting to this wake-up call, Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, and his team have now set up a dedicated group for AI within the company, focusing primarily on generative AI. This new AI technology will be instrumental in developing future products. Despite these efforts, any tangible consumer-level output is yet to be seen, although the company has announced a chatbot, MetaMate, which is being tested internally.

However, with many companies bolstering their AI capabilities, Meta faces a talent challenge. This is due to the increased demand for AI experts, coupled with some level of employee turnover at Meta due to layoffs and burnout. It is essential for Meta to stay competitive in AI to avoid being overtaken by other social media companies.
