Nice sentence:
- (非洲疫苗短缺)No one asked for generosity - only justice. Self-interest as well as decency should have(本應(yīng)該) encouraged fairer distribution of vaccines: no one is safe until everyone is safe.(出于個(gè)人利益也要幫幫非洲兄弟)Yet two years into the pandemic, with thousands of people dying every day, the prospect of anything approaching vaccine equity remains as remote as ever.(疫苗公平的愿景還是遙不可及的)More boosters have been delivered in the developed world than first and second doses in low-income countries - the places that can least afford other measures such as restrictions on movements. What is worse, only one in four African health workers was fully vaccinated, compared with two thirds of people in high-income countries.
- (貧窮國(guó)家有錢買不到疫苗) The omicron wave has highlighed the risk posed to everyone by variants which prove more lethal and greater infectious. Covid-19 has been a painful lesson: those countries with production assets are the ones who can vaccinate their people. Richer nations have engaged in vaccine nationalism - hoarding doses, or even worse in some cases, later thrown away unused- so that the African Union was unable to buy anything with the billions of dollars it had in hand(手握數(shù)十億美元卻買不到). Because national leaders will not prioritise another population over their own. (非政府組織式微)On the other hand, the schemes of Non-governament organizations have fundamental flaws in spite of its good intentions, including a failure to involve governments and civil society from lower-income countries. They also lack effective means to guarantee the stable production and supply from other countries for African needs. For example, when the Delta variant hit India, its government imposed an export ban. Sadly, Africa was left without even the inadequate supply it had been promised.
- (解決做法)Wealthier nations should provide assistance now, more than money. The pharmaceutical giants are supposed to build Covid vaccine manufacturing plants in these southern countries, or roll out their own version of doses. Meanwhile, there is growing demmand for the insititution to share knowledge or technology transfer in future outbreaks, like patent waiver. This will cost more, but that is the price of being fair.
