At the end of 2010, culminating of La Liga, FC Barcelona took over from Manchester United in first place in the ranking. Manchester United topped the World rankings the year before, leading FC Barcelona by 17 points, the ninth time in ten years that they finished top.

2010 saw considerable changes in the decade ranking of the clubs. The two Champions League finalists (Inter and Bayern) both moved up positions, displacing AC Milan. FC Barcelona won the Spanish League and overtook Manchester United at the end with 27 points advantage.

A long way behind the struggle between Barcelona and Manchester United were Liverpool, Arsenal and Inter.

Europe’s Club of the 20th Century, Real Madrid CF , took the 8th place for this period.

The ? Top 100 ? was composed of clubs from Europe (68), South America (26), CONCACAF (4) ad Africa (2). The best placed Asian club in the Club World Ranking of the 1st Decade (2001-2010) was Al-Hilal FC Riyadh (175) and the best Oceania club was Auckland FC City (790).

Among the ? Top 100 ? in the world, the following countries had the most clubs : Brazil (9), Italy (8), Germany (8), Spain (7), France (7), England (6), Argentina (5), Mexico (4) and Netherlands (4).

Although the leading trio was not successful in the final two years of the first decade (2001-2010), their lead of points proved to be sufficient. CA Boca Juniors Buenos Aires was South America’s Club of the First Decade of the 21th Century ahead of Sao Paulo FC and his local rival CA River Plate.

South America’s Club of the 20th Century (1901-2000), CA Penarol Montevideo (Uruguay) made only a disapppointing 36th place.

The “Top 100″ was represented by? five Argentinian and four Brazilian clubs as well as the sixth-place Club Nacional de Football Montevideo (Uruguay). But among the 16 top-placed clubs were eight Brazilians. Clubs from all ten countries to the CONMEBOL belonging were represented in the “Top 100″.

The “Top 100″ was composed as following : Brazil (21 clubs), Colombia (16), Argentina (15), Chile (11), Peru (9), Paraguay (7), Ecuador (7), Uruguay (6), Bolivia (6), Venezuela (2). During the period 2001-2010, 185 clubs achieved 150 or more points.

CA Boca Juniors Buenos Aires was honoured by the IFFHS as South America’s Club of the First Decade of the 21th Century at the World Football Gala 2012 in Barcelona.

After nine of ten years, the standings were as follows : Manchester United FC topped the European ranking, leading FC Barcelona by 17 points. The year 2010 brought considerable changes in the total European ranking for the first decade. The two finalists of the UEFA Champions League, FC Inter Milano and FC Bayern München overtook Milan AC. During the first decade (2002-2010), 643 European clubs achieved 150 and more points.

35 countries were affiliated with CONCACAF, although not all of them were considered ; mostly their leagues (clubs) were too weak, and would not have stood a chance of placing somewhere in the middle of their continental rankings. However any participation of clubs from the CONCACAF area in CONMEBOL club competitions was taken into account ; not only for a better global ranking but also because CONCACAF only had one club competition.

Although the lead of Club de Futbol América Ciudad de Mexico? was reduced in 2010, the metropolitan club was Central and North América’s Club of the First Decade of the 21th Century,? ahead of CD Guadalajara, the local rival CD Cruz Azul, Pachuca CF and CD Toluca. Among the “Top 18″ were 13 clubs from Mexico. The “Top 100″ was composed of clubs from 13 countries. Countries with the most clubs were : Mexico (18), USA (13), Costa Rica (11), Guatemala (10), El Salvador (10), Honduras (9), Panama (9), Nicaragua (5), Jamaica (5) and Trinidad&Tobago (5). During the first decade (2001-2010), 110 clubs amassed more than 150 points.

CF América Ciudad de Mexico was honoured by the IFFHS as Central and North América’s Club of the first decade at the World Football Gala in may 2012 in Barcelona.

Al-Ahly Cairo increased its lead in 2010 and was Africa’s Club of the first decade of the 21th Century . The club was honoured by IFFHS at the World Football Gala 2012 in Barcelona.

It was remarkable that two Egyptian and two Tunisian clubs were among the “Top 10″ and that three North African clubs leaded the ranking. Africa’s Club of the 20th Century, Asante Kotoko Kumase (Ghana) occupied only 11th place.

The “Top 100″ was composed of clubs from 21 countries. The countries with the most clubs among the “Top 100″ were : Algeria (11), Nigeria (11), South Africa (9), Egypt (8), Morocco (8), Zambia (8), Cameroon (7), Tunisia (6), Ghana (6), Angola (5) and Ivory Coast (4). During the period 2001-2010, 268 African clubs amassed more than 150 points.

Contrary to the manner in which the top club of each continent was determined for the 20th century (1901-2000), national competitions were held in all countries over the entire first decade after the turn of the millenium. All theses national club competitions were taken as much into consideration for the CLUB WORLD RANKING as were the club competitions held by the continental Confederations and by FIFA. In doing so, each individual result of these aforementioned competitions was considered from start to finish. For each continent, chances were the same for each club during the First decade (2001-2010).

The yearly points scored by clubs in the CLUB WORLD RANKING were added from 2001 to 2010, the first placed was crowned as the Continent’s Club of the First Decade. After the move of the FFA (Australia) to the AFC at the beginning of 2006, completed with FIFA’s approval, also the Australian clubs were affiliated with AFC. Therefore the points scored by the Australian clubs since 2006 were be taken into consideration in the Asian ranking of the First Decade.

Thanks to the early elimination of Pakhtakor FK Tashkent and Al-Ittihad Jeddah from the national Cups of their respective countries and from the AFC Champions League in 2010, Al-Hilal Riyadh advanced from third place to top the ranking at the end of 2010. Because of the mentioned low point differences – there was in the last year of the 1st Decade additional changes of position among the “Top 10″ and even extremely much in the total Asian club ranking. Among the “Top 10″ were each two clubs from Saudi Arabia, Japan and the Republic of Korea.

After Al-Hilal FC Riyadh was already Asia’s Club of the Century (1901-2000), and Saudi club was also Asia’s Club of the 1st Decade of the 21st Century. The “Top 100″ of Asian club ranking for the 1st Decade (2001-2010) was composed of clubs from 25 countries. The countries with the most clubs among the “Top 100″ were: Japan (11), Republic of Korea (9), Iran (9), China (8), UAE (6), Saudi Arabia (5), Qatar (5), Kuwait (5), India (5), Uzbekistan (4), Singapore (4) and Lebanon (4). During the period 2001-2010 237 clubs achieved more than 150 points.

Late in 2005 the FFA (Australia) left the Oceania Confederation (OFC). Since clubs must be affiliated with the respective Confederation, only those points were considered for the Oceanian club ranking of the First Decade which Australian clubs earned during the period of 2001-2005. Therefore, depending on the period, Australian clubs may appear in either the Oceanian or the Asian continental club rankings. Only for the CLUB WORLD RANKING of THE FIRST DECADE, the Oceanian and Asian points earned by Australian clubs were added together.

After nine years, the ranking was topped by Perth Glory (Australia) and five Australian clubs were in the Top 10, showing the great superiority of the Australian League over the others in Australia, the australian clubs earning no longer points in Oceania since January 1? 2006 !

Auckland City FC gathered many points in 2010 from its participation in the OFC Champions League and remained clear ahead of Ba and Perth to become Oceania’s Club of the first decade of the 21th Century. During this period (2001-2010), 36 clubs achieved more than hundred points.

Since the Club World Ranking only start with 1991, the continental club rankings for the 20th century had to be calculated using a different method, one which also took into account other factors and could be applied equally to all continents. Having honoured the top club of each continent for the 20th century, it appeared sensible to forget an all-time Club World Ranking and replace it with a Club World Ranking for the 21st Century Club World Ranking for that decade. which would then be expanded every year by simply adding the points each club earned in the Club World Ranking up to December 31. Thus we have a uniform system for calculating the world and the continental club rankings based on the result of every match played by each club. After ten years of the first decade of the 21st century (2001-2010), FC Barcelona? topped this Club World Ranking, just 27 points ahead of FC Manchester United, and 136 ahead of the Reds of Liverpool. Arsenal came in fourth, ahead of both Milan clubs, FC Bayern München and Real Madrid CF. Chelsea FC took place 9 just before CA Boca Juniors BuenosAires, the first non-European club to place 10.

An outstanding question was which club had developed most on global level - towards end of the 20th century - and has progressed most in the top group of the Club World Ranking of the 1st Decade of the 21st Century. The World‘s best promoted Team of the 1st Decade is FC Shakhtar Donetsk. The Ukrainian team with its long-standing Romanian coach Mircea Lucescu was not placed in the 20th century rankings for European clubs but catapulted to the 24th place in the Club World Ranking of the 1st Decade. In this category two Spanish clubs follow: Villarreal CF from the same 20th Century starting point achieved only 65,5 points fewer than Donetsk in the period 2001-2010, and took 28th place. It is also remarkable that Sevilla FC improved from 192nd place in the European club ranking of the 20th century to 21st place in the Club World Ranking of the 1st Decade of the 21st Century.

FC Barcelona was honoured as the World‘s Club of the 1st Decade at the occasion of the World Football Gala 2012 with a certificate and a golden trophy, and FC Shakhtar Donetsk, as the World‘s best Progressive Team of the 1st Decade, with a silver trophy.
