Vande Bharat Express or Train18's air conditioned chair car ticket would cost Rs 1,850 and the executiveclass fare will be Rs 3,520 for a Delhi to Varanasi trip, including thecatering service charges, officials told PTI Monday.

Fares are reasonable enoughprovided people are getting to travel in world class cabins with excellentamenities and much better safety. As an example, a train ride from Boston toNew York on the Amtrak in the US costs which is less than half the distance costsroughly Rs 1,500 or higher adjusted for purchasing power in local currency.However, these train fares might be lower for longer trips as the attractivenessof flight journey is higher for longer trips due to time savings and hence thetrain fares can be priced competitively. Also, a small portion of the ticketfares' can be used for enhanced surveillance and security so that many shamefulincidents of vandalism and theft of screens and valuable fixtures in the trainare nipped in the bud. If anyone is caught doing so, they should be blacklistedin a database and given a strict imprisonment of 5 years. And in fact,passengers should be rewarded for reporting these kinds of incidentsanonymously on a real time basis so that the culprits can be nabbed on thespot. Unfortunately, the majority of these incidents happen in UP and Biharwhere it seems nobody cares about law and safeguarding and respecting publicproperty and amenities.
