The Ming Dynasty, which ruled China for 276 years, is described as one of the greatest eras of orderly governance and social stability in human history. During this period, the development of handicraft industry promoted the market economy and urbanization. A large number of commodities, including alcohol and silk, were sold in the market. Meanwhile, many foreign goods such as clocks and tobacco were also imported. A series of commercial metropolises including Beijing, Nanjing, Yangzhou and Suzhou were successively formed. It was also in the Ming Dynasty that the fleets led by Zheng He made seven large-scale expeditionary voyages to the Indian Ocean. It is also worth mentioning that three of the four great classical masterpieces of Chinese literature were written during this time.

The Song dynasty began in 960 and continued until 1279. Over the course of this dynasty, the Chinese economy grew significantly and became the most advanced economy in the world. Science, technology, philosophy, and mathematics also flourished during this period. Song China was the first in world history to issue paper money nationally. It also saw the first use of gunpowder, as well as the invention of movable-type printing. The population grew rapidly during this time, and more and more people moved to cities, which had lively entertainment quarters. Social life during the Song dynasty was rich and varied;people gathered to view and trade precious artworks. The Song system of government was also advanced for its time; government officials were all selected and appointed through competitive examinations.

The Tang Dynasty, which started in 618 and ended in 907, is the most splendid period in Chinese history. After nearly three hundred years of development, China in Tang Dynasty became the most prosperous power in the world, and its capital Chang’an was the world’s largest metropolis. During this time, China enjoyed a developed economy, prosperous commerce and a stable social order, and even opened its borders to the outside world. Along with urbanization and the increase in wealth, art?and literature also flourished. Li Bai and Du Fu were poets renowned for the conciseness and naturalness of their works. Their poems touched the hearts of scholars and ordinary people alike. Even today, many of their poems are still widely read and recited by both children and adults.
