【種花家學·詩經】1國風-05衛(wèi)風-10木瓜『附:理雅各英釋版』
【閱前提醒】本篇專欄的外語原文部分出自蘇格蘭經學家理雅各所著的《The Chinese Classics》。理雅各先生出生于1815年(清嘉慶二十年),一生致力于中西方文化的交流,其最重要的成果就是詳盡譯釋了種花家傳統(tǒng)經典。由于理雅各先生的本職是傳教士,因此其翻譯工作帶有濃烈的“譯經為次,釋經為要”的職業(yè)習慣(不少傳教士譯者都有這種習慣,例如傳教士柯大衛(wèi)翻譯的《論語》也是注重釋經),這種緊抓釋經權的翻譯模式至今仍是獨一份。不過由于理雅各的譯作卷帙浩繁,因此目前人們常常刪去釋經只取譯文。但我感覺此書的釋經部分才是精華,直接丟棄實在是有些買櫝還珠了。因此就計劃用業(yè)余時間對理雅各的譯作原文進行整理上傳。當然此書規(guī)模實在龐大,以我的業(yè)余精力和水平,只能是能整理多少算多少,能整理成什么樣算什么樣。?
一、國風·衛(wèi)風·木瓜PARTⅠ.BOOKⅤ.ODE Ⅹ.Muh?kwa

二、詩經《衛(wèi)風·木瓜》小序
????????木瓜,美齊桓公也。衞國有狄人之敗,出處于漕,齊桓公救而封之,遺之車馬器服焉,衞人思之,欲厚報之,而作是詩也。
【理雅各譯】The Muh kwa is in praise of duke Hwan of Ts'e (B.C.683-642).?The State of Wei had been ruined by the Teih, and the people had fled and were living in Ts'aou. Duke Hwan came to their rescue, and re-instated Wei, sending gifts, moreover, of?carriages, horses, utensils, and robes. When the people thought of his conduct,they wished to recompense him largely, and made this piece.
三、理雅各韻體版詩譯?

A tree-gourd they gave me in compliment,
And I in return gave a lovely keu-gem.
'Twas not in return for the compliment;-
I wished to make lasting my friendship with them.

四、理雅各散體版詩譯?

五、理雅各版釋經?
0、緒言
Metaphorical.SMALL GIFTS OF KINDNESS SHOULD BE RESPONDED TO WITH GREATER;BUT FRIENDSHIP IS MORE THAN ANY GIFT.
【山譯】隱喻詩。帶有善意的小禮物應該得到更大的回報,而真摯的友誼比禮物更重要。
【山注】舊詩經體系中依照毛詩小序觀點,認為此詩是衛(wèi)人為報答齊桓封衛(wèi)之恩所做。但自朱熹到聞一多,不少學者認為這只是一首愛情詩,甚至可能是描寫女子送給男子表達愛意的小禮物后,男子直接回贈定親信物的場景。
0.1、韻版緒言
When Wei was nearly extinguished by the Teih, duke Hwan of Ts'e, as the leading prince among the States, came grandly and munificently to its help; and Maou finds in this piece the grateful sentiments of the people of Wei towards him. If this be the correct interpretation, Hwan's all but royal munificence and favour is strongly represented by the insignificant present of a fruit. Choo compares the piece with ⅲ.ⅩⅦ., and thinks it may refer to an interchange of courtesies between a lover and his mistress. But we need not seek any particular interpretation of it. What is metaphorically set forth may have a general application.
【山譯】當衛(wèi)國幾乎被狄滅國的危機時刻,齊桓公作為諸侯霸主,極為慷慨的援助了衛(wèi)國,毛公從這首詩中看出了衛(wèi)人對齊桓的感激之情。如果這是本詩的正確解釋,那本詩就是只用一個微不足道的水果去表現(xiàn)齊桓公的慷慨與恩寵(山注:這句話的意思是理雅各并不信服毛詩小序中此詩是描寫齊桓封衛(wèi)后衛(wèi)人感恩齊桓的這個觀點,也就是說,理雅各也傾向于這是一首愛情詩)。朱熹將這首詩與《03邶風·17靜女》作比較,認為這首詩是在描寫男女交往的場景。但其實我們并不需要極為確定的解釋,因為此詩作為一首隱喻詩,可以有普遍的應用場景。
【山注】姚際桓、方玉潤、朱熹等人駁斥此處毛詩“美齊桓說”的理由主要有三:①齊桓封衛(wèi),對衛(wèi)人有再造之恩,衛(wèi)人答謝時,不可能用木瓜等廉價水果比喻封衛(wèi)大恩,而用瓊琚等貴重玉器比喻自己的回報。②此詩文辭有些輕佻,不像是國與國之間的對答,更像是朋友之間的交流對話,甚至是親密男女之間的交往情話;③史書上沒有關于衛(wèi)人以重禮回報齊桓的任何記載,如果有,以孔門的偏好,一定會重墨記載,而如果衛(wèi)人壓根沒有重禮回報的計劃,怎敢以此詩作為外交辭令,真當齊桓公脾氣好嗎?
0.2、散版緒言

We can hardly conceive that this is the correct historical interpretation of the piece. If it be so,Hwan's all but royal munificence and favour is strangely represented by the insignificant present of fruit. Choo compares the piece with ⅲ.ⅩⅦ.〖山注,原書此處是ⅱ.ⅩⅦ.,但我查證朱熹原話是邶風·靜女,故改之〗,and thinks it may refer to an interchange of courtesies between a lover and his mistress. L1.1,2 in all the stt. means, properly, 'to throw at or to'; but here='to present'.
【山譯】這三章各自前兩句中的所有“投”都是一個意思,投的原意是“投擲扔向”,而此處均是贈予的意思。
【山注】此處理雅各是根據鄭箋:“投,猶擲也?!钡恼f法。此處含有贈送之意。
3.02、木瓜、木桃、木李
木瓜 is the well-known carica papaya;called a 瓜, we presume, from its gourd-like fruit. We must understand the terms here of the fruit, and not of the tree. But what are we to make of the 木桃 and 木李 in the other stanzas? Neither Maou nor Choo says anything in explanation of the 木, nor does the Urh-ya mention such trees.The probability is, therefore, that we are to understand by the phrases simply the peach proper and the plum proper.The Pun-ts'aou, indeed, gives the name of 木桃 to the cha-tsze(樝子),'a kind of bad pear', and of 木李 to the ming cha (榠樝) which is described as an inferior variety of the muh kwa. But these identifications have been made for the sake of the texts before us. Maou quotes a saying of Confucius,that in this ode he saw 'the ceremony of sending presents in bundles made of rushes(苞苴之禮行),' which might lead us to translate 'a bundle of the papaya',&c.; but where Maou found the saying, we do not know. It appears,indeed,in the fabrication by Wang Suh, attributed to K'ung Ts'ung(孔叢子);but it was stolen,?probably,?by Suh from Maou.
【山譯】“木瓜”是一種常見的水果,我們猜測,其之所以稱為瓜,是因為其葫蘆狀的身形。我們必須理解這個木瓜指的是果實而不是生產果實的樹木。而我們應該怎么理解第2/3節(jié)中的木桃和木李呢?無論是毛公還是朱熹都沒有對木桃和木李進行解釋,《爾雅》也沒有相關描述。所以我們只能用“桃子”和“李子”進行理解。《本草》認為“木桃”的學名是“楂子”,一種不好的梨;而“木李”的學名是“榠楂”,即不好的木瓜。但這些解釋是專門針對這篇詩歌。毛公引用孔子的話語“見苞苴之禮行”,即看到用草編織袋承裝禮物的儀式,這會讓我翻譯成一捆木瓜、木桃、木李等,但是我們不知道,毛公究竟是在哪里看到的這句話。比較顯然的是,可以在《孔叢子》中找到這句話,不過這本書成書于東漢之后,因此這句話可能反而是出自毛公之說。【山注,此處不明Wang Suh其義,暫無法翻譯】
【山錄】《本草綱目》——〔時珍曰〕木瓜可種可接,可以枝壓。其葉光而厚,其實如小瓜而有鼻。

????????③似木瓜而無鼻,大于木桃,味澀者為木李,亦曰木梨,即榠楂及和圓子也。

3.03、瓊琚
The Shwoh-wan defines 瓊 as 'a gem of a carnation colour'; but in this ode the term is used as an adj,.=beautiful(玉之美名)'. 琚 is the name of a gem. Two square keus formed part of the furniture of the girdle appendages;-see on V.3.
【山譯】《說文》定義“瓊”為一種紅色的寶石。但在本詩中用來作為形容玉石美麗的形容詞。“琚”是一種寶石名,兩個方形的琚用來裝飾腰帶。【山注,此處不明V.3.其義,暫無法翻譯】
【山錄】《說文解字·瓊》——赤玉也。從玉敻聲。渠營切。
3.04、瑤、玖
The yaou was another prized gem,or stone,acc.to the Shwoh-wan;and the kew was a?stone, ranking in value immediately after the gems.
【山譯】根據《說文》可知,“瑤”是另一種玉石,而“玖”是一種價值僅次于玉石的石頭。

3.05、匪報也,永以為好也!
L1.3,4.As expanded by Yen Ts'an, these two lines are-此非足為報,欲以結好於永久.This is not sufficient to be a return,but I wish by means of it to tie the bonds of friendship for ever.'
【山譯】嚴粲解讀這三章的各自后兩句的意思為“此非足為報,欲以結好于永久”,即這并不足以為報,而是以此來維系我們之間的友情。
