Another factor that has led to a smaller number of men during the post-war years is traditional Russian alcoholism. Russians are famous for their drinking habits, and alcohol has been a major killer of men in Russia (as explained by a 2014 study published in The Lancet, a medical journal - Alcohol and mortality in Russia: prospective observational study of 151?000 adults). This led to even more men dying relative to women as more men tend to be alcoholics than women.
I have now established that there was a shortage of men and a relatively large number of women during the post-war years. Of course since there was a shortage of men, the men got to pick and choose among the women, and the most beautiful women were quickly taken. This of course, resulted in their children having some of their “beautiful mother’s” genes and physically attractive features were passed on to the next generation.

The answer is “no”, because the honest answer is - some of them are, some them are less so, but it is the matter of your taste, preferences, etc. And it applies to Russian people in general, not only women, because, I do not see a real point to somehow underline specifically Russian women, because, like in every other country, men and women share almost all of their typical physical features, even from the basic biology, there cannot be beautiful women without beautiful men, and vice versa.

Russia is diverse country, with many ethnic groups, and appearance of people is also rather diverse. Most people who don’t live in Russia or are not very familiar with the country, usually make their opinions about Russian people from quite limited number of celebrities and small number of pictures circulating around the internet. In reality, celebrities and occasional pictures does not tell very much, how an average Russian person looks like. They can be very different looking people, both tall, short, stocky or slim, blond or dark, Asian-looking or completely European-looking.
In Russia there is quite significant number of people, who pay very significant attention to their appearance. Does it always makes them beautiful? Well, depends on your taste, but for my liking they sometimes are trying too hard, to the point that there is too much cosmetics and shiny clothing to be attractive for me. But I am aware, that for somebody else it is exactly what they are looking for.

Or, in some worse cases, people of both genders who look terrible, because they do not care about their appearance very much, and also suffer from addictions. You would not call them even remotely beautiful. And their proportion in Russia is significantly larger than many other European countries, because Russia has relatively high income inequality, and it is by far less urbanized than most of the Europe.

And here again this question about the notorious "Russian beauty" ... It's funny that all the beautiful East Slavic girls of the post-Soviet space (now it can belong to three separate countries: Belarus, Ukraine, Russia) are considered “Russian beauties”.

As far as I know, most modern Russian girls know how to style their hair beautifully and use make-up (sometimes even too much), dress nicely (glamorously), trying to emphasize the merits of their figure (which by the way are indisputable). But it is rather a feature not only of Russian, but of any modern Slavic woman in the post-Soviet space. Yes, I can confirm that among the Russian girls (at least among those I knew) there are a lot of really beautiful young women. And they are smart, educated and successful. But I’m not sure whether it is possible to say so about all Russian girls. Probably not. Just among Slavic women (especially young ones) there are really many delightful and simply attractive ones.

As for the special beauty of Russian girls – so they are also mostly Slavic, and therefore they are no exception. I don’t know where this myth of the special "Russian beauty" came from, but I think there is a tangible truth in it. Although, external beauty isn’t the most important thing in our life.

I have lived and traveled throughout Russia and will admit, Russia is one of the best countries when it comes to physical beauty. I lived in St. Petersburg for 5 months and was surrounded by tens of thousands of beautiful young women, and became so accustomed to this environment that it was simply the norm for me. It is in fact so saturated with beauty a younger man can find a new girlfriend or wife within short order of arriving to the country. When I arrived to Russia I met my ex-girlfriend within 2 weeks of arriving to St. Petersburg, Russia, and had a very positive and great relationship during the time that I was living in Russia. With that stated I will not say that Russian women are any easier than North American females, as some guys in the PUA (pick-up artist) community will state.

It is worth noting that knowing basic conversational Russian will go a long ways in this country and without knowing any Russian the dating pool will be smaller than otherwise. Before arriving to Russia I had begun studying Russian so I was already quite familiar with Russian grammar and pronunciation which served to help me quite a bit with meeting new people including my ex-girlfriend. Also, online dating is not the mechanism for meeting great potential Russian partners, day-time environments could also be great places to encounter new younger women. I happen to meet my ex-girlfriend at a major bank that she worked at and was able to first begin a friendship which then became a relationship over time.
