大頭大結(jié)節(jié)鱷/Proexochokefalos的模式物種，Proexochokefalos heberti最初于1876年被Morel de Glasville命名為狹蜥鱷屬即“Steneosaurus heberti”，來自完整的頭骨和下頜骨（編號為MNHN.F 1890-13），發(fā)現(xiàn)于位于Villers-sur-mer附近的Callovian時代的Marnes de Dives，即在法國諾曼底的卡爾瓦多斯省。狹蜥鱷屬即“Steneosaurus depressus”已知是Proexochokefalos heberti的次異名。
另一個物種大頭大結(jié)節(jié)鱷/Proexochokefalos bouchardi的化石出土于法國卡昂阿卡迪爾和瑞士羅森奈特組/Reuchenette Formation這倆地區(qū)。
