大家好，我是李文（筆名：花和尚）。

賽馬是一個(gè)奇特的世界，在欣賞國(guó)際一流賽事的時(shí)候，總有一些術(shù)語(yǔ)讓我們不能更盡情享受比賽。

所以筆者決定開(kāi)始做一個(gè)《賽馬English》的欄目，每期只講一個(gè)概念，條分縷析、掰開(kāi)揉碎，保證你看完之后能用得上。

筆者是英文專(zhuān)業(yè)畢業(yè)，英語(yǔ)既是愛(ài)好，也是工具，更是熱情。

為什么要和筆者一起學(xué)賽馬English？下面是理由：

在《賽馬English》里，我們不列單子，一次學(xué)會(huì)一兩個(gè)詞，下課就能用得上，這比你看到一篇文章心想“不錯(cuò)，先收藏著”要好得多。

賽馬English之路，你我同行

前言

對(duì)，剛剛那個(gè)是引子，這是前言……

話(huà)說(shuō)距離《【賽馬English】第1課：賽馬比賽的途程計(jì)算》已經(jīng)有半年了，筆者也覺(jué)得總不能把這個(gè)弄成一年一更，新的一年?duì)幦「碌目煲恍?/p>

?

這期不是說(shuō)某一個(gè)具體的詞匯，而是從我畢業(yè)的迪拜國(guó)際純血馬實(shí)習(xí)(DITI)這個(gè)項(xiàng)目找到一些英語(yǔ)書(shū)面語(yǔ)vs口語(yǔ)的區(qū)別，都是和賽馬相關(guān)。

入選DITI需要筆試和面試，第二年會(huì)有畢業(yè)典禮，筆者有幸成為畢業(yè)生代表(valedictorian)發(fā)言。

所以本文從筆試的10題里選出3題，再附上畢業(yè)典禮的發(fā)言稿，原文英文、后附譯文。

3道筆試題

提交時(shí)間：2013年年末

面試共有10道題，有字?jǐn)?shù)限制，需要在規(guī)定的字符里盡可能充分、有效地表明觀點(diǎn)、說(shuō)明意思。

英語(yǔ)寫(xiě)長(zhǎng)了簡(jiǎn)單，從句套從句可以無(wú)限循環(huán)，難得的是“簡(jiǎn)潔而有力”。

描寫(xiě)一個(gè)人“跑得快”可以寫(xiě)run quickly，或者一個(gè)詞sprint

一個(gè)人不是very tired，他是exhausted

一個(gè)人不是very sad，他是devastated

這不僅僅是詞匯量，也是寫(xiě)作人的思路。

4. Explain any experiences, interests or involvement you have with horses

4.?請(qǐng)說(shuō)出你與馬的任何經(jīng)歷、為什么喜歡馬

Born and raised in a city named Dalian, home to the first squad of Mounted Policewoman in China, I started a fancy for horses from the first time I met this gigantic and intelligent creature. Sitting on the horse, the height and joy made me feel like a knight, waiting to be dubbed by the Queen. Here not only can you see the brave mounted ladies patrolling on the street to protect citizens but you can go to Dalian Xunan Knight Club to ride British thoroughbred, Orlov Trotter and Mongolian horse, etc. Though they are not Dubai Millennium, nothing beats the thrill of being a part of magical union to charge forwards.

我在大連土生土長(zhǎng)，這里有中國(guó)第一支女子騎警隊(duì)。從我第一眼看到馬我就喜歡上了這高大、聰明的生物。坐在馬背上，那高度和喜悅讓人感覺(jué)自己是個(gè)騎士，等待女王冊(cè)封。在這里你不僅能看到勇敢的女騎警巡視街道、保護(hù)市民，還可以去大連巡安騎士俱樂(lè)部騎英純血、奧洛夫和蒙古馬等。盡管它們不是「迪拜千禧」，但什么也比不上人馬合一、向前沖鋒的刺激。

In addition, in September, 2012, I led a delegation from General Administration of Sports of China in Worcester, England. We spent a week there and discussed the Sino-British cooperation on sports with University of Worcester. During the leisure time, I visited Worcester Racecourse and watched several National Hunt races. Sitting on the bleacher by the south side of the River Severn, I felt the magnificence brought by the races from the 13-furlong oval circuit.

此外，2012年9月，我?guī)е鴩?guó)家體育總局(GASC)的代表團(tuán)來(lái)到了英國(guó)的伍斯特，并與伍斯特大學(xué)就中英體育合作這個(gè)話(huà)題洽談了一周。間隙，我來(lái)到伍斯特賽場(chǎng)看了幾場(chǎng)越障賽。坐在塞汶河南岸的看臺(tái)上，我感受到了這13弗?。s2600米）長(zhǎng)的橢圓賽道上的比賽之魅力。

Jockeys weaving their whips, audiences cheering, racehorses whinnying, the tension was extraordinary and I could barely contain my excitement and stood on my feet, applauding the winner. Horseracing prioritises speed, stamina and rewards honour. This is the kind of sports that tells the simple truth:?getting the first place is paramount and better won with style.

騎師揮舞馬鞭、觀眾歡呼雀躍、賽馬奔鳴，氣氛熱烈。我也控制不住激動(dòng)之情、起身為冠軍喝彩。賽馬比賽最看重速度、毅力，崇尚榮譽(yù)。這種運(yùn)動(dòng)講了一個(gè)簡(jiǎn)單的道理：速度第一，贏得有范兒。

9. Why do you believe HH Sheikh Mohammed established Dubai International Thoroughbred Internships programme?

9.?你認(rèn)為謝赫?穆罕默德酋長(zhǎng)為什么要成立迪拜國(guó)際純血馬實(shí)習(xí)這個(gè)項(xiàng)目？

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed’s love for horses began when he was young and under his father’s influence. When studying English in Cambridge, the owner of his foster family told him, with pride, that International Horseracing started in England. Since then, that small seed sown years ago has grown into a mighty tree under which there is Darley, Godolphin, champion stallions and various trophies.

謝赫?穆罕默德酋長(zhǎng)從小愛(ài)馬、深受父親影響。他在英國(guó)劍橋?qū)W英語(yǔ)時(shí)，寄宿家庭的主人頗為自豪地告訴他—世界賽馬起源于英國(guó)。從那時(shí)起，一顆小小的種子成長(zhǎng)為一株巨樹(shù)，樹(shù)下有達(dá)利、有高多芬、還有冠軍種公馬和無(wú)數(shù)的獎(jiǎng)杯。

As far as I am concerned, to a man from a royal and old-established family, the pleasure and excitement produced by wealth and power diminishes staggeringly fast and lasts not very long. And yet, the delight and sense of achievement acquired from helping the young to shape and build the world is marvellous and even greater if it is combined with the benefactor’s personal favorite—thoroughbred. Dubai International Thoroughbred Internships programme is the perfect combination of the two. Someone has either the wealth or the love for thoroughbred and someone has both. Nevertheless, none of them has ever founded a programme like the DITI which could only be made possible if the founder has the talent, taste and resources. That man is HH Sheikh Mohammed.

我認(rèn)為生于皇室望族，由財(cái)富和權(quán)力帶來(lái)的喜悅和興奮會(huì)迅速消解、不會(huì)長(zhǎng)久。但是，助力年輕人改變和創(chuàng)造世界所帶來(lái)的高興和成就感是奇妙的，如果與資助人的個(gè)人興趣-純血馬相結(jié)合就更棒了。迪拜國(guó)際純血馬實(shí)習(xí)就是這二者的完美結(jié)合。有些人家財(cái)萬(wàn)貫、有些人愛(ài)馬如命，還有人二者兼而有之?？墒?，這些人都沒(méi)有建立一個(gè)像DITI的項(xiàng)目，這個(gè)項(xiàng)目需要?jiǎng)?chuàng)立者有天賦、有品位還要有資源。這個(gè)人就是謝赫?穆罕默德酋長(zhǎng)。

Coincidentally, a dear friend of mine is a trainee of this programme as we speak. He strongly recommended DITI to me with great enthusiasm and admiration. And it is my honour and wish to be a part of this once-in-a-lifetime project.

巧合的是，我的一個(gè)好朋友正在這個(gè)項(xiàng)目里實(shí)習(xí)。他強(qiáng)烈建議我申請(qǐng)DITI，言語(yǔ)里不乏熱忱和尊敬。我希望能獲得這個(gè)千載難逢的機(jī)會(huì)，能加入DITI是我的榮幸。

10. In your own words, please describe why you believe HH Sheikh Mohammed is an influential person within the global thoroughbred industry

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed is the greatest patron of thoroughbred industry.

謝赫?穆罕默德酋長(zhǎng)是純血馬業(yè)最大的贊助人。

As the ruler of Dubai, he has transformed it from small desert city into skyscraper-studded international playground, financial centre and home of his thriving racing and breeding business. With commercial breeding operations and thousands of acres of land in seven countries from Europe to Japan to Australia, His Highness’s Godolphin empire has horses racing all over the globe and the efforts paid off well: the best stallions in the world has won him numerous awards including Eclipse Awards and the Dubai World Cup.

Maintaining a large amount of interest in the thoroughbred industry, HH Sheikh Mohammed established Darley Stud, a bloodstock breeding operation headquartered in England. Starting from one single horse, Darley Stud has become a world-leading operation about horseracing and His Highness’s endeavour is generally applauded. For instance,?Independent, a nation-wide newspaper in the UK acclaims him “single-handedly responsible for keeping British horseracing alive”.

因?yàn)閷?duì)純血馬業(yè)抱有巨大熱情，迪拜酋長(zhǎng)建立了達(dá)利這一總部在英國(guó)的全球育馬場(chǎng)。從僅有一匹馬開(kāi)始，達(dá)利馬場(chǎng)已經(jīng)成為世界領(lǐng)先的馬業(yè)機(jī)構(gòu)，謝赫?穆罕默德酋長(zhǎng)居功至偉。例如，英國(guó)紙媒《獨(dú)立報(bào)》這樣褒獎(jiǎng)他“單槍匹馬肩負(fù)著保全英國(guó)賽馬的重?fù)?dān)”。

筆者在本科時(shí)是英語(yǔ)學(xué)院英語(yǔ)演講與辯論俱樂(lè)部的成員，師從黃滔和陳婧兩位老師。兩年里訓(xùn)練了無(wú)數(shù)定題演講和即興演講的題目，亦有諸多問(wèn)答題目。

PS?下面的演講稿準(zhǔn)備時(shí)間不足，在成文前不久我還在馬房工(chan)作(shi)。好在畢業(yè)典禮不是比賽，壓力小了很多，臺(tái)下的多是熟面孔。而畢業(yè)演講的要義是感謝、總結(jié)和展望。

Good evening, ladies and gentleman.

?

My name is Wen LI. Cocoa is my English name. I am this year’s graduate from the UK.

?

I am delighted to come to such a wonderful place as The Hong Kong Jockey Club Beijing Clubhouse and I would like to expresses my gratitude to His Highness Sheikh Mohammed for building DITI, a programme which allows us to go to different parts of the world to learn thoroughbred industry.

This is DITI’s third year and it produced 60 excellent graduates who are involved in thoroughbred industry as well as other fields. Tonight, all 23 of us will be joining them.

?

During our internship, we studied from foaling, cleaning the stable to witnessing training, auctions and watching races. Beginning with bewilderment to proficiency, it is easy to say it now but none of this could be done without our effort and the programme’s assistance. Because this is the programme which is concerned about you, teaches you and pushes you to always learn something new.

All DITI interns gathered together in December to visit Dubai for three weeks and tried to understand how Dubai emerged from a fishing village to the most shining star in Middle East only in decades and we also learn its increasingly close relation with China.

?

In these ten months, our horizons are widened.

You will find a large number of people are in a career of which you never heard in another corner of the globe, for generations.

You will find life is like a foal learning to stand up and walk. Sometimes you fall, and yet you will get up in next moment, if not this moment.

You will find this world is filled with endless possibilities, be it this door, that window or next corner, which will all turn into experience and some into immense fortune.

If one was required to summarise the experience of DITI interns in one phrase, that would be “A Trip Worth Taking”.

今晚很高興能夠來(lái)到香港賽馬會(huì)北京會(huì)所如此隆重的地方，感謝謝赫-穆罕默德酋長(zhǎng)建立DITI這個(gè)項(xiàng)目，讓我們有機(jī)會(huì)來(lái)到世界各地學(xué)習(xí)純血賽馬這個(gè)行業(yè)。

DITI項(xiàng)目已經(jīng)走過(guò)了三年，產(chǎn)生了60名非常優(yōu)秀的畢業(yè)生。他們正活躍在馬圈和其他行業(yè)中，而我們這23人即將加入他們的行列。

?

在這為期十個(gè)月的實(shí)習(xí)生涯中，我們學(xué)習(xí)、經(jīng)歷了從小馬誕生、清理馬房到觀摩馴馬和拍賣(mài)會(huì)、到場(chǎng)觀賽的方方面面。從一開(kāi)始的仿徨、不知所措，到后來(lái)的駕輕就熟、得心應(yīng)手，這一切說(shuō)起來(lái)簡(jiǎn)單但是卻凝結(jié)著我們無(wú)數(shù)的努力和公司的指導(dǎo)、幫助，因?yàn)檫@個(gè)項(xiàng)目對(duì)實(shí)習(xí)生很重視、讓你學(xué)到很多東西、不斷鼓勵(lì)你嘗試新東西。

在十二月的時(shí)候，全體實(shí)習(xí)生更是有機(jī)會(huì)到迪拜游學(xué)三周，領(lǐng)略一個(gè)小漁村是如何在幾十年間從無(wú)到有、聚沙成塔，成為整個(gè)中東地區(qū)最耀眼的明星，還了解到迪拜與中國(guó)日益緊密的聯(lián)系。

在這十個(gè)月里，這個(gè)項(xiàng)目為你打開(kāi)了眼界。

你會(huì)發(fā)現(xiàn)世界上有另外一撥人做著你之前完全不知道的行業(yè)，他們很多人世世代代以此為生。

你會(huì)發(fā)現(xiàn)生活有時(shí)就像蹣跚學(xué)步的小馬駒，時(shí)有跌到，但總會(huì)在這一刻或下一刻堅(jiān)強(qiáng)地站起來(lái)。

你會(huì)發(fā)現(xiàn)這個(gè)世界充滿(mǎn)了無(wú)數(shù)的可能性，這道門(mén)、那扇窗、下一個(gè)拐角、偶然的機(jī)會(huì)，都會(huì)變成人生路上的經(jīng)歷，有些成為了你終生的財(cái)富。

如果要用一個(gè)詞來(lái)概括在DITI的這段經(jīng)歷，那就是“不虛此行”！
