25 Lesson 5 - Photobashing Basics Part 1 - Photobashing 101 - What is Pho

P25 - 00:01照片bash 101?

?Hey, In case you didn't know photoshop is an image editing and altering software. It was created in 1988. So it's a lot older than I am. But when you compare it to the history of art and painting, think about like leonardo da vinci or Michelangelo who are back in the 14 hundreds.

painting is thousands of years old. Photoshop is just 30 years old. That's like nothing. The purpose of intense of photoshop were you specifically to alter images and photographs. These days. You won't be able to find advertisements without them. And means would be so much more difficult without any image editing software. naturally since photoshop is about visual design. It's hard to fall into the hands of us artists too. today just as photoshop. And any image editing software of choice is crucial to the editorial or advertisement or commercial industry. It is now also crucial to the concept art industry.

Hyper realistic games such as last of us two red dead redemption or call of duty, all required concept art that look very accurate to what the final product is. If you ask your artist to, oh, I don't know, hand paint every single one of these leaves and blade of grass and piece of tree bark, that's gonna be wasting a lot of studio time and money and video games would probably take 20 years to make instead of the 3 years that it takes to make a single call of duty game. ?

Even now though, because of the increasing demand for better and better and better graphics, even call of duty is really struggling to release a fully finished game every single year, even with its typical three year incubation periods. It's not their fault, really. It's just that technology has made such a huge impact on our media and entertainment and our expectations are now through the roof, even animated movies are getting more and more realistic. ?

I would dare say movies like toy story four look more realistic than some of the first person shooter games out there. And don't get me even started on live action movies. CG is getting stronger by the minute. ?

P25 - 02:21真?zhèn)坞y辨。?

And now we're starting to have trouble figuring out what is real and what isn’t. with the rise of things such as deepfake. Therefore, because as you remember, the purpose of concept art is to help our team visualize what something will look like in its finished stage. It becomes more and more important that we can capture a photographic a life quality, especially if you're working on something that is meant to have a photographic like finish. ?

However, the reason why they're hiring us a concept artist and not a photographer, is because if your art director or your film director wants a pegasus flying through a castle in the mountains with waterfalls, you're not gonna find that in the natural world. And no one is going to be able to photograph that. So that's where we come in. And this is where the technique of photo bashing comes in.

03:15 Even if you don't want to make hyper realistic work. Photo bashing is now an essential skill needed by any concept artist, and is also a fantastic skill to learn and add to your own repertoire. It's the art of taking a bunch of photographs and stitching them together in a way that completely forms a new image. ?

You can consider it a highly advanced form of collage. Knowing photo bashing means that we have to be able to understand how real life lighting works. And if you do it poorly, no amount of photographs will ever be able to help you. before anything, though, because photo bashing is relatively new. There are a few myths about it. So I'm going to try and resolve them for you.?

Number one photo bashing is cheating. I see this myth going around a lot that if you photo bash, you're not actually doing the work, you are just lazy. Well, sorry hate to burst your bubble. But that was a very shallow way of thinking.?

during the adventure stage. The painters at that time were using a paint known as tempera, which is a type of paint that dries incredibly quickly and uses egg whites. Back then, mixing paint became very troublesome and difficult. ?

However, oil paints came along, because it used oil and not things like egg whites. It didn't dry out that easily. It would stay wet so that artists could mix the paint as much as they wanted and not have to work under an intense time pressure. But all the older artists were like, oh my god! That is cheating! You can't do that. Your art isn’t true art. How dare you? have the luxury of ,but then it became a standard. And oil paintings soon became the norm.?

Then during the 19 hundreds, Norman rockwell became a very famous American painter whose works are known to be on the covers of hundreds of Saturday evening post magazines, the most famous American magazine at this time. Magazines were a very big deal back then, since people didn't exactly have YouTube or instagram to keep themselves entertained back then. But people got furious at Rockwell because he would stage his art, take a photo, and then use a projector and project his photo onto his canvas and trace from there. And of course as people do, they said, oh my god, that's cheating. You can’t do that. how dare you have the luxury of using a projector. you should have to? draw everything out from memory and be able to deliver it as a painting for each of the magazine covers every two weeks that fail. ?

But truthfully a lot of artists around him used this technique. it's save time, and it was needed for work. Although one person who famously didn't do this was JC leyendecker, who used grids for his work. Obviously, JC leyendecker was like a god of painting. But as you can see, even as amazing as JC leyendecker, his work doesn't photographic real as Norman Rockwell’s paintings. Not to say that one is better than the other. In fact, I personally preferred Leyendecker style more. But when we’re trying to go for a very photo realistic finished. You’re going to need a lot of help.?

So let’s jump back to today. Now people are saying photoshop is cheating. How dare you. They cry. I hope this voice isn't annoying by the way, but too bad. You have to listen to it anyway. How dare you have the luxury of being able to insert a photograph for textures like brick in stone at least. That would otherwise take 4 bus pay by hand. You should be able to draw all of this by your own hand. And deliver us painting every single day. No, I'm not kidding in the live-action movie industry, it's normal to be expected to paint a fully finished photo bash piece every single day.?

in the games industry, there is usually around three days to a week. But that's still an absolutely impossible amount of time to finish a piece. If you're going to be painting every single thing by hand. So no, it's not cheating.?

People who call it cheating are the equivalent of people who scoff and say hi I don’t use the a computer. I get my knowledge from book and dictionaries and encyclopedias. And when you ask them what like an antelope is, instead of simply Google ing it, they'd be doing this, cause they're flipping through their domains Cyclopedia. ?

Now, second myth. So can I bash other people's artwork then? Cause I can use photographs, right? Absolutely not. This is a bit of an unspoken rule that we do not bash painted artworks by other people, or photo bashed pieces by other artists. Even with photographs, try not to take your photograph from very well established photographers as they can be incredibly disrespectful and illegal. Remember, the purpose of photo bashing is so that we can quickly bash in something like grass, bricks teacup, or in this case for my piece of broken mirror, a toilet, a lamp, something that would have taken forever to hand paint. But we take a photo instead in order to emulate a photo realistic look. If I take grass out of photo of the Grand Canyon. So if I took these bushes right here, it's okay, because my priority is the grass. The photographer does not own the grass. Or I guess this is a shrub, not a piece of grass. But anyways, they don't own the grand canyon either. They don't own the rocks and they don't own the stream. All of it belongs at the end of the day to mother nature. And she is happy to share. She never goes to court with anyone, I promise. But when it is a painting, the artist does own the grass. They own the canyon, they own the tree. And they own the characters. And they own most of the aspects of their painting. So no, you cannot take their work that is just stealing with extra steps.?

My favorite photographs to pick from are the ones that you will just find on Google images, random stuff that random people have posted for the sake of spreading Information. However, I try to actively stay away from photographers who viewed their photo as their own personal art. So typically that is in the realm of professional and well established photographers.

Another thing is to be careful of stock photo images, because chances are you will run into them. It's okay to use them for personal work and to just photoshop the logos out. But for commercial and marketing and industry work, make sure to purchase the photograph or let your company know. I'm not really sure why your company would purchase this particular stock photo, but anyways, using their photo is also stealing. If you didn't pay for it. Big movies and video game studios all have legal teams that specifically crackdown on this stuff to make sure that any public art they post don't have photos or art that are violating copyright laws. Although sometimes you can still find water marks of stock photo images and professional concept art. In fact, my friends and I actually found a watermark in the ending concept art cards of Mandalorian. I won't single the artist out or point any fingers. But it was pretty funny to see sometimes if things do slip out of the cracks. And that is a pretty solid introduction to the concept of photo bashing.?

Honestly, I wish that someone told me this stuff when I first started bashing. I had no idea what I was doing. It was probably breaking a bajillion rules. But I have learned and now I'm here to make sure you have a much smoother time bashing. It sounds so weird. The term bashing sounds so weird. It's like you're going to a party or something because photo bashing is so technology focused. The next episode will just be about technique and skills that you need to know in photoshop. Let's get to it.
