We generally believe that in order to maintain a good social order, in addition to relying on the law, morality has also played a great role.
But in fact, most people dare not do evil only because they are punished by law. Once the constraint of compulsion is lost, some people can turn into the most terrible beast in an instant.
If there is no punishment, people will have the freedom to act as they wish.
There are two opposing forces in the society--law and morality. Immanuel Kant said that the source of law lies in our will. That's why law is different from country to country and region to region. Morality, however, is a constant. It exists in every human heart and it has always existed.
You don't need a law to not steal. There is something in your heart that tells you it's wrong to steal someone else's property no matter what.
Of course, there are those who try their best to be immoral. For these people, the fear of punishment is what keeps them in check. And as we all know, sometimes the worst crimes are committed by those who keep their deeds secret.
