如果你問(wèn)我研究生快一年的時(shí)間我到底學(xué)到了什么？撇開(kāi)口譯不說(shuō)，筆譯我學(xué)到了動(dòng)腦。我們的筆譯老師經(jīng)常ma我們不用腦子，不思考，學(xué)不會(huì)思辨。我也和批改班的學(xué)弟學(xué)妹們經(jīng)常聊到翻譯不是字字對(duì)應(yīng)，而是要不斷發(fā)問(wèn)，不斷思考的。
但概念光說(shuō)很抽象，最近在準(zhǔn)備暑期筆譯批改班新材料時(shí)，遇到了一個(gè)小例子。和大家分享，大家可以感受下什么是思辨。

1. a lot

翻譯材料中有這么一句話，“I use the word iteration a lot. ”

a lot這個(gè)表達(dá)從小學(xué)就開(kāi)始見(jiàn)，那么簡(jiǎn)單又那么不起眼。

相信大家看到a lot的第一反應(yīng)就是“很多”。

此前我也是，但經(jīng)過(guò)長(zhǎng)期訓(xùn)練，我產(chǎn)生了一個(gè)疑問(wèn)，究竟多少算很多？多少是a lot？

雖然此處a lot和頻率有關(guān)，但沒(méi)有數(shù)量那么直觀，我選擇搜數(shù)量，然后類比頻率。

于是我就開(kāi)始到Google查證，首先我是搜圖，因?yàn)閳D片能給我?guī)?lái)直觀的視覺(jué)判斷。隨后考慮到a lot既可以修飾可數(shù)名詞，又可以修飾不可數(shù)名詞。那就意味著要搜兩次圖。

我先搜索可數(shù)的，于是我搜a(bǔ) lot of apples，看看“很多??”是多少？

我得到的結(jié)果如下：

一眼看過(guò)去，我初步得出結(jié)論：對(duì)于可數(shù)的事物，一眼望去數(shù)不過(guò)來(lái)可以算很多。

但這只是針對(duì)可數(shù)事物，如果是不可數(shù)呢？多少算a lot？接著我用, a lot of money 做關(guān)鍵詞，檢索結(jié)果如下：

我發(fā)現(xiàn)，錢(qián)的多少很難下定義。對(duì)于極其貧困的人來(lái)說(shuō)，可能一塊錢(qián)都算a lot。對(duì)于大佬來(lái)說(shuō)，100萬(wàn)眼都不帶眨的。

我初步得出結(jié)論：可能沒(méi)有確定的規(guī)則，因人而異。

是否正確還需要進(jìn)一步核查。

2. 求證

懶人有懶辦法，雖然ChatGPT不總是那么helpful。但是英語(yǔ)詞語(yǔ)解釋這方面，它幾乎沒(méi)垮過(guò)。

于是，我就開(kāi)始提問(wèn)，How much or how many can be defined as “a lot”? 以下是它的回答：

看到這里心里大概就有譜了，a lot多不多具體看個(gè)人，看情景。

為了進(jìn)一步驗(yàn)證，我又去了Quora，果然有人問(wèn)了類似問(wèn)題。How many people is a lot? 答案如下：

看到這，剛剛結(jié)論又得到了驗(yàn)證。

此時(shí)，默默感嘆GPT誠(chéng)不欺我。
