In comparison to?Mount Eerie’s stark, autobiographical recent work, the new song “Love Without Possession” feels downright communal. It is a calm, clear-eyed meditation on love as a word, a mythology, and a natural event with the power to devastate and heal. This exploration takes place in both the music and lyrics. Phil Elverum, who has spent the last few years performing and recording entirely alone, is now accompanied by?Julie Doiron, a singer who served as a formative influence on his earliest work (via her ’90s group Eric’s Trip) and a fruitful collaborator (on 2008’s?Lost Wisdom). Together, they tell a story that’s less narrative-based than the last two Mount Eerie albums but just as personal and profound.

Atop Elverum’s strumming acoustic guitar, an earthy arrangement builds from the sheer force of their imagery: Elverum’s reference to the void summons a low, echoing buzz while Doiron’s vision of an unrealized future gains momentum with a rising drumbeat. Both singers are able to form melodies from the natural cadence of their words (“Magma embroidering,” “Exhale to dissipate,” “Smouldering”) so that just reading the lyric sheet can create a kind of musicality in your mind. After two albums whose lyrics detailed Elverum’s personal life with essayistic precision, his songwriting here finds equal purpose from a zoomed-out perspective. “Love,” he and Doiron sing together, “A small word unable to hold/While we stretch at its meaning.” Together they find resonance in its dissolving, singing to one another through the fog.
