在上一期，富二代公子彬格萊要入住尼日斐的莊園的消息，引發(fā)了班奈特老爺和太太的爭(zhēng)論。班太催著丈夫去見(jiàn)這個(gè)理想金龜婿，而班老爺不僅不答應(yīng)，還使勁挖苦她。不過(guò)，后來(lái)班太和女兒們還是見(jiàn)到了這位傳說(shuō)中的貴公子。事實(shí)證明，他真是個(gè)理想女婿，不僅有錢(qián)，還有教養(yǎng)。他欣然受邀參加了當(dāng)?shù)氐囊粓?chǎng)大型舞會(huì)，在這里，彬格萊的好基友——男主達(dá)西將閃亮登場(chǎng)，并和女主伊麗莎白結(jié)下“傲慢與偏見(jiàn)”的梁子……

Mr. Bingley was good-looking and gentlemanlike;

彬格萊先生相貌堂堂，風(fēng)度翩翩；

he had a pleasant countenance, and easy, unaffected manners.

His sisters were fine women, with an air of decided fashion.

His brother-in-law, Mr. Hurst, merely looked the gentleman;

but his friend Mr. Darcy soon drew the attention of the room by his fine, tall person, handsome features, noble mien;

and the report which was in general circulation within five minutes after his entrance, of his having ten thousand a year.

The gentlemen pronounced him to be a fine figure of a man, the ladies declared he was much handsomer than Mr. Bingley,

and he was looked at with great admiration for about half the evening, till his manners gave a disgust which turned the tide of his popularity;

for he was discovered to be proud, to be above his company, and above being pleased;

Mr. Bingley had soon made himself acquainted with all the principal people in the room;

he was lively and unreserved, danced every dance, was angry that the ball closed so early, and talked of giving one himself at Netherfield.

他活力四射，毫不拘謹(jǐn)，每一場(chǎng)舞都跳；他抱怨舞會(huì)結(jié)束太早，還說(shuō)自己也要在尼日斐莊園辦一場(chǎng)。

Such amiable qualities must speak for themselves.

這種親切和藹的品性不言自明。

What a contrast between him and his friend!

他和他朋友真是天差地別！

Mr. Darcy danced only once with Mrs. Hurst and once with Miss Bingley, declined being introduced to any other lady, and spent the rest of the evening in walking about the room, speaking occasionally to one of his own party.

達(dá)西只與赫斯特太太和彬格萊小姐各跳了一次舞，當(dāng)有人介紹他與其他女士跳舞時(shí)，他竟拒絕了；那晚余下的時(shí)間，他就在舞會(huì)上四處走動(dòng)，偶爾和他同伴說(shuō)說(shuō)話。

*按規(guī)矩，男士應(yīng)在舞會(huì)上主動(dòng)邀請(qǐng)?jiān)趫?chǎng)的女士跳舞。彬格萊和全場(chǎng)的姑娘都跳過(guò)舞，這就是標(biāo)準(zhǔn)的懂禮貌好青年。而達(dá)西的表現(xiàn)確實(shí)顯得很不懂事了。

His character was decided.

他的性格很明顯了。

He was the proudest, most disagreeable man in the world, and everybody hoped that he would never come there again.

他是世界上最驕傲，最不討喜的男士；每個(gè)人都希望他下次別來(lái)了。

Amongst the most violent against him was Mrs. Bennet, whose dislike of his general behaviour, was sharpened into particular resentment, by his having slighted one of her daughters.

最討厭達(dá)西的人要數(shù)班太太了，她不喜歡達(dá)西的舉止，后來(lái)又特別地厭惡，因?yàn)檫_(dá)西冷落了她的女兒。

Elizabeth Bennet had been obliged, by the scarcity of gentlemen, to sit down for two dances;

由于現(xiàn)場(chǎng)男士較少，有兩場(chǎng)舞伊麗莎白只得坐著看；

and during part of that time, Mr. Darcy had been standing near enough for her to overhear a conversation between him and Mr. Bingley, who came from the dance for a few minutes, to press his friend to join it.

這段時(shí)間達(dá)西就站在邊上，而彬格萊正好從舞池下來(lái)幾分鐘，勸他一起跳舞。于是伊麗莎白無(wú)意間聽(tīng)到了兩人的交談。

"Come, Darcy," said he, "I must have you dance.

“來(lái)吧，達(dá)西，”彬格萊說(shuō)，“我一定要讓你跳舞。

I hate to see you standing about by yourself in this stupid manner.?You had much better dance."

我不喜歡看你一個(gè)人傻乎乎站著。你跳跳舞多好啊?！?/p>

"I certainly shall not. You know how I detest it, unless I am particularly acquainted with my partner.

“我才不要。你知道的，我多么討厭跳舞，除非舞伴特別熟悉。

At such an assembly as this, it would be insupportable.

Your sisters are engaged, and there is not another woman in the room, whom it would not be a punishment to me to stand up with."

"I would not be so fastidious as you are," cried Bingley, "for a kingdom!

Upon my honour, I never met with so many pleasant girls in my life, as I have this evening;?and there are several of them, you see, uncommonly pretty."

"You are dancing with the only handsome girl in the room," said Mr. Darcy, looking at the eldest Miss Bennet.

"Oh! She is the most beautiful creature I ever beheld!

“啊！她是我見(jiàn)過(guò)最美的人了！

But there is one of her sisters sitting down just behind you, who is very pretty, and I dare say, very agreeable.?Do let me ask my partner to introduce you."

但是她的一個(gè)妹妹正坐在你身后，非常好看，而且我敢說(shuō)，性格也很好。讓我請(qǐng)我的舞伴介紹你吧?！?/p>

"Which do you mean?" and turning round, he looked for a moment at Elizabeth, till catching her eye,

he withdrew his own and coldly said, "She is tolerable; but not handsome enough to tempt me;

and I am in no humour at present to give consequence to young ladies who are slighted by other men.

You had better return to your partner and enjoy her smiles, for you are wasting your time with me."

你得回去找舞伴了，好好欣賞她的笑容，別跟我浪費(fèi)時(shí)間了?！?/p>

Mr. Bingley followed his advice.

彬格萊先生照做了。

Mr. Darcy walked off; and Elizabeth remained with no very cordial feelings towards him.

達(dá)西先生走開(kāi)了；而伊麗莎白不為所動(dòng)。

She told the story however with great spirit among her friends;

不過(guò)她倒是興致勃勃地跟朋友們說(shuō)了這事；

for she had a lively, playful disposition, which delighted in anything ridiculous.

因?yàn)樗曰顫?、頑皮，對(duì)任何荒唐的事情都只覺(jué)好笑。
