Roles

There are two camps in the game.

One person serves as Game Master (GM) in charge of the game. Sometimes the GM is called "God".

"Good" camp

Villager: 村人

A human. No special ability.

Twins:?雙生

Two humans. They know each other at the very start of the game.?

Unlike normal?villagers,?who cannot?trust?any?one as?certainly a human, they can?trust each?other completely.

Priest/prophet:?神官

A human. Every night he can check the species?of one character.?The result is either "human" or "werewolf".

Mortician/coroner:?葬儀屋

A human. When night comes, he would know?whether the one executed?during the day?was?really?a?werewolf.

Similar to a priest, but weaker than the priest since he cannot choose.

Knight/bodyguard:?騎士

A human. Every night he picks one character (not himself) to protect. This character cannot be killed by the devil that night.?

The knight should avoid exposing?himself, else he would likely?be killed?that night (he cannot protect himself).

"Evil" camp

Madman:?狂人?

A human, but allied with?werewolves.?Since he is a human, the priest?do not judge him as a werewolf.?He doesn't have any special abilities, and he has the role of confusing the villager camp by lying and moving to the advantage of the werewolves.?

The madman does not know the devils or other madmen.

Devil/werewolf:?悪魔

Every night, the devil picks one non-devil character to kill. The devil knows other devils, but not the madman.

Preparing the game

Players?sit?in?a circle so that they can all see each other.?One of the players will be?the game master?(hereafter GM).?The GM can be pre-determined or randomly selected.

The GM randomly distributes one job card to each player. Players look at their job cards. Players must keep their cards hidden from others at all times, unless otherwise specified.

The GM then calls for the Werewolves to open their eyes and identify each other silently.

The GM then calls for the Twins to?open their eyes and identify each other silently.

The game starts in the day or night?phase. If it starts in the day phase, then there is no execution in the first day phase.

Night phase?

The GM instructs the players to close their eyes?("Night has come. Players go to sleep.").

The GM tells the werewolves to wake up and choose one player to attack (e.g. "Werewolves, open your eyes. Decide who to attack tonight").

The werewolf silently points at the player to attack.?If there are multiple werewolves, the werewolves will silently gesture at each other?to decide which one to attack.?Once the target is determined, the werewolf closes its eyes.

Werewolves cannot attack at the first night.

The GM then tells the Priest to wake up and let him specify who he will check?about (e.g. "Prophet, please open your eyes. Decide who you will be prophesying about tonight"). ).?The Priest silently designates the player to be predicted.?The GM tells the Priest whether the target player is a werewolf or not by using a predetermined hand gesture.?The Prophet then closes his eyes.

A smilar process applies for the Knight, and the Mortician.

Day phase

The GM announces that it is dawn for everyone and tells them the names of the players who were killed last night (e.g. "It's dawn. XX?died last night"). It is possible that nobody died last night?(e.g. "It's dawn. Nobody?died last night").

Afterwards, there is a few minutes of free conversation between the survivors to search for the werewolf. Players are free to lie about their jobs, but cannot reveal their job cards.

After a predetermined amount of time, the GM interrupts the conversation (e.g., "It's time to vote. Please stop talking.") Then the players vote for one person to be executed.?If more than one person with the highest number of votes appears, one person will be decided by performing?a run-off vote?or deciding at random.

Players selected for execution die and are?removed?from the game . According to?rule variants they may be allowed to say some last words. Their job cards are still not revealed.

Ending conditions

The GM declares the end of the game as soon as one of the following conditions is met.

When all werewolves die: "Good" camp wins, including those who died before the end of the?game

When the number of werewolves is equal or greater than the number of humans: "Evil" camp wins,?including those who died before the end of the?game.

Note: The madman, though on the "Evil" camp, is still a human, so if there remains 1 werewolf, 1 madman, 1 villager, then the game must go on.

Rule variants allow for other ending conditions.
