Hatch Confirmed at CVNP/ SR Bridge Site
20230515 Over the past several days, we were seeing all the signs that there was likely a hatch, and we were finally able to confirm today that there are hatchlings at the RT. 82 Bridge/Station Road Bridge site at the CVP! This is exciting that Zen and Zara have made it to this phase, although they are not "out of the woods". We believe that the hatchlings may be a few days old, as we were seeing the adult behaviors indicative of hatching (i.e. increased aggression, the female remaining at the nest except for only brief breaks, the female refusing his prey offerings), but now we know for sure. Back in 2011, a pair (Strike and McKinley) hatched out three chicks, but they didn't survive past about 2 weeks (although they were in a different spot on the bridge). Zen brought prey to Zara in the nest site this afternoon, and she flew out with it, plucking and eating some, and then she returned to fly up into the nest site and feed. Although we couldn't yet see the chicks from our position, we could see her feeding posture and heard her feeding vocalizations. We let a few friends know of the good news, including Jeff B, who came back later and caught a feeding where he was able to see at least 2 chicks that he captured on video from a distance (thanks, Jeff)! Zen pulled out cached prey about an hour after we arrived at the site (after checking other sites first)... we were glad to time it well enough to see him go to the nest with the prey...
Zen flying in and landing up over the nest crevice. We could see wings flapping as Zara flapped up toward him to retrieve the prey...
...and Zara flew out the other side, securing the prey with her feet and beak...
...and Zara flew off to another area of the bridge, where she plucked a few more feathers and ate a little of the prey. And then she flew with it and circled around before heading to the nest...
She flew up with the prey and Zen was in the nest...
...so she looked to land higher up on the arch...
...but she decided not to try to land...
...and she flew on while Zen was in there...
...and after a few more circles, she flew back toward the nest with the prey...
Zara with the prey...
...heading to the nest...
...and she flew up to the nest...
...landing carefully with Zen still in the nest...
Zara landed, and Zen ended up flying out the other side as she took the prey back in and fed. We could only see her in feeding posture from this angle, so we couldn't yet see the chicks (although our friend, Jeff caught a feeding later today where he was able to see glimpses of at least 2 chicks)...
