Get ready to see another world from the eyes of a dragonfly — at least, a robotic one.

NASA said Thursday that it's sending a drone called Dragonfly to explore Saturn's largest moon, Titan. Using propellers, the drone will fly and land on several spots on the icy moon to study whether it can support microbial life.

The nuclear-powered mission is part of NASA's competitive New Frontiers program, which launched the New Horizons spacecraft that became the first to visit dwarf planet Pluto.

Dragonfly beat out nearly a dozen proposed projects, including a mission to collect samples from a nearby comet. The drone is slated to launch in 2026 and arrive at Titan in 2034. The plan is to land on some of Titan's dunes and later on a crater. Development costs for the mission are capped at around $850 million.

The future of space travel belongs to robots. There's so much emphasis in the public imagination about landing humans on Mars. That would be a great symbolic achievement but one of very little scientific value given the fact that humans cannot survive on Mars nor anywhere else in the solar system, even with protective habitats. It has all the scientific value of trying to get humans to survive inside the remnants of the old Chernobyl ruins. Robots, on the other hand, can survive anywhere we send them to. Our resources need to stay with projects like Dragonfly and, further on down the road, the development of robots capable of interstellar travel (10% the speed of light is foreseeable sometime this century).

The way our Government is, goals are changed for NASA. If a guy like Newt was elected President, he'd direct Money to a moon base. Trump want's the money to go to Mars, and perhaps a democrat would want the money to go private companies like Obama did. The new wave of Democrats may want the money to be used on Earth to fund education, and medical. I've never heard Burnie even mention space, so who knows what he is thinking.
