PART 1 Advanced English Conversation Phrases
1.To take something seriously
英譯:?to accept something sincerely
例:When the teenage girl told her mom, “I hate you,” her mom didn’t take it seriously.
例:I wish I had taken school seriously.?
2.On top of
英譯:in addition to, usually to show surprise?
例:My dog ripped my school books, and on top of that, he ate my homework.
例:This vocabulary lesson is great. On top of that, it’s free!
3.Quite a few
英譯:indirect way to say “a lot”
Note: The expression “a few” means “a little” but adding “quite” makes the statement stronger and more emphasized.?
例:I ate quite a few cookies.?
例:Quite a few students participated in the 30 Day Listening Challenge.?
4.Little to no
英譯:an expression to explain a scale, like “1 to 10”?
例:I invited 20 people to my party, but little to no people responded.
例:Last week he had little to no time to cook at home. He was so busy!?
5.To be a roller coaster
英譯:an experience with many positives and negatives
例:Last year was such a roller coaster! I got married, and then got fired from my job, and then moved to New York!?
例:The relationship was an emotional roller coaster for 6 months.?
6.I’m talking…
英譯:?a casual expression to emphasize a point?
例:The teacher told the students, “This semester, we’ll be studying the different historical figures. I’m talking, Winston Churchill, Genghis Khan, Aristotle…?
例:The restaurant was so fancy. I’m talking, suit and tie, a local weekly menu, a live cello player...
7.At all
英譯:completely; always used in negative sentences
Note: this phrase is almost always at the end of the sentence
例:My test is tomorrow, and I haven’t studied at all!?
例:I thought my cats would be annoyed about having a new baby, but they didn’t care at all. 8.Six figures
英譯:a salary of 6 digits, $100,000 or more?
Note: we cannot use this phrase with 5 figures, because that might be 10,000 (a little money) or 90,000 (a lot of money). But 6 figures is always a lot of money.?
例:He wants to be a doctor because he wants to get a six-figure salary.?
例:They earned six figures last year.?
9.To go through something
英譯:?to have a negative experience?
例:Last month I went through a lot! My car broke down, my grandma was in the hospital, and I had a terrible cold.?
例:You’re going through a lot right now. Please take care of yourself.?
10.To make it
英譯:to be successful
例:He’s moving to LA to be a movie star. I hope he makes it!
例:I drove through the rain, snow, and hail. After 3 hours I finally made it to the concert!

PART 2? Advanced English Verbs?
1.Tell
英譯:to understand, to know?
Note: Always used with “can”?
例:I couldn’t tell by looking at his face.?
例:Can you usually tell when someone is lying to you??
2.Do
英譯:?used to show emphasis, especially to show the truth
例:I really do want to study English every day, but I always forget.
例:My manager does want to speak with you, but he’s busy right now.
例:I’m sorry, I forgot that you don’t like sushi.?
-No, I do like sushi. What I don’t like is spicy food.?
3.Bet
?英譯:to be almost certain; often used to show empathy?
Note: We always use “I bet” because “you bet” has a totally different meaning. “You bet” is a slang way to say “yes, absolutely.” For example: Are you ready to eat dinner? -You bet!?
例:I bet that you want to be a fluent English speaker.?
例:I bet you’re glad that the exams are over.?
例:Your dog died last weekend? I’m so sorry. I bet that it’s been a hard week.
