The new exhibition pavilion on the Novartis Campus is enveloped in a media facade comprised of organic photovoltaics. The double-sided embedded LEDs display specially curated digital art and consume only the electricity generated by the facade itself.
?
The Novartis Pavillon is located within a park on the Novartis Campus in Basel, Switzerland. Designed by architects AMDL CIRCLE and Michele De Lucchi, the pavilion is a place of encounter and learning about life sciences, hosting "Wonders of Medicine", a permanent multimedia exhibition, as well as meeting spaces and a café. iart created a communicative building skin for the pavilion in collaboration with the architects.

The zero-energy media facade of the Novartis Pavillon consists of a total of 10'000 diamond-shaped solar modules with 30'000 embedded LEDs. The LEDs shine both outwards and in the direction of the metal shell beneath – causing their light to reflect and shimmer through the semi-transparent solar modules.
?
This visually multi-layered membrane is used to screen the works of three international artists, Daniel Canogar, Esther Hunziker and Semiconductor. They collaborated with scientists to develop artworks inspired by the shapes and colours of cells and molecules, as well as the themes of sustainability and the convergence of art and science. Their works are shown on the facade every day after sunset. During daytime, the facade displays moving text, using only the white LEDs that face away from the building.

By combining organic photovoltaics and LEDs, the membrane becomes a zero-energy media facade.?This means that the total amount of energy consumed by the facade over a year is (at least) equal to the amount of energy it produces itself.
?
The zero-energy media facade acts as an interface between the inside and the outside, allowing the building to enter into a dialogue with the surrounding urban space. It turns the Novartis Pavillon into a luminous icon that is visible from many locations in Basel.

iart is a studio for media architectures based in Basel, Switzerland. Founded in 2001 by Valentin Spiess, iart enhances physical spaces with digital technology, thus enabling novel experiences. By taking on complex engineering and scenographic challenges, and applying emergent technologies, the studio has built a reputation for seamlessly integrating the digital into the built environment. To date, it has collaborated with internationally renowned architects, artists, and museums, garnering numerous design awards around the globe.
Previous media architecture projects include the light frieze at the Kunstmuseum Basel in collaboration with Christ & Gantenbein; the media facade for the Herzog & de Meuron designed M+ Museum; the MegaFaces kinetic facade at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Games, created in partnership with Asif Khan; and a solar-tech infused media skin for the Swiss pavilion at the 2010 Expo in Shanghai.
