1. Design Principles---2-1.Overview

P4 - 00:01?

? Let's move on. When I was a kid, just so you know I was raised in soviet union. So soviet union was then a very unique experience for me. I was 10 and soviet collapse.?

Basically, there are a lot of interpretations of these design elements,?

but let's keep it simple. Go to Wikipedia and you've got like really five of those color, shape, texture space for that sort of thing.?

And you can read the description. It's pretty straightforward. And I will show you some examples and I hope by the end of this lecture, you will have a very solid idea of what these design elements are. ?

So I made this small chart like, Let's say this is our chart, So this is our design elements. This is out of the center of the universe. And basically the shape form texture, space and color.?

So let's start with the shape. So what does shape mean??

In order to show something, you need to put a shape, let’s put a start really simple, let’s put the same shapes. we’ve got same four shapes.?

Just using one design element which is shape that they are all same. There is no difference between them. This is why you have other elements that you will be using form like. Let's deform the form a little bit. This guy is sphere, we never know before we put on a cross section.?

Now these guys is sphere. And if it was a transparent one, you will see the back side. And you will understand these guys.?

Is this sphere, Because he understand the form right now. How about this guy? Well, you never know. But if you, for example, put something like this. And make another cross section. that's probably it could be a cone, but you don't know. So you probably will use shading, to add some shading Information on this guy. this is a kind of conical.?

how about this guy? You never know until you put some additional Information. That's why you're using another element, which is called form. And just by changing the form, you can generate different ideas. For example, this one was a sphere, and this one is a if you look from profile. Put profile like these. It’s really difficult to understand how this these guy look like? is it another sphere? Maybe not. If you put some cross sections as well. Or you put something else over here. What is this thing? And then you put a shadow of here. Now this guy becomes probably this is an antenna.? This one? Let me have this one. And also this is the shadow board. And this is like metal beard. And this is the shadow for me. ?

So just by changing the form, you can completely change the way you see the stuff in front of you.?

And you can completely change the character of the vehicle. character, environmental, whatever you did.?

So form is the very strong element. I will do separate the total on this one. The story was all about just showing you all of them together.? So let's go to the next one. Texture. what does texture say??

P4 - 08:32演示材質(zhì)如何用??

Texture would definitely tell us a lot of stuff as well. For example, how big is this guy like? This this could be a sphere, Like, let's put another shade of this guy. ?

P4 - 08:47比如陰影放置在另一個圓柱體。?

Now we know it's kind of a spherical object as well. But how big is this guy? You never know until you put them out of something else. Like, let's say, if you put it like this. Do something like this. And then suddenly you would be like, wait a minute. I know this guy. This is a death star.?

And if you put another scale indicate or somewhere here. Oh, wait a minute. This is a huge object. You know this guy, right? Everybody knows the death star. So you see how much texture changes this thing.?

you have a form as well? But also have the texture, which is a really smooth texture. But you can take this guy. Put something else.?

Let’s just use texture brush. How big this guy until we put the texture. So I will be doing a separate big a more extensive texture tutorial. So let's just move on.?

And the next one. And the very last one was color. just by changing the color you can completely changed the story as well.?

So if you have one of those things. but once you do this. We still don't know this guy. But once you put a little bit color, wait a minute. then you just do this. maybe it's a sun. So it's actually this sun doesn't matter.?

Of course, you paint a little bit of texture. now it looks like a sun. if you're looking for a sun, very close up angle.?

So just by changing the color. And adding a little bit of texture. We are having a completely different story.?

So that's why those five design elements will be your core instruments to create your own story. So understanding each one of those is very important. That's why I will do more extensive lectures on every one of those.?

1. Design Principles---2-2.shape

P5 - 00:01?

?Let’s put four similar spheres. We've got four identical spheres and depending on what shape they have, they all represent different stories.?

So just by depending on really small things will just dramatically change the story.?

Ok. What is this sphere is about? I don't know. Maybe it's a planet of the rule, but. There is no way of telling this as a planet.?

But what if we put something that indicates? everybody knows the stuff, right? So you can easily see this is a planet or it could be some another random planet. ?

But everybody knows this is something related with space.?

Let's just spread them a little bit further from each other.?

P5 - 01:11拖拽的遠(yuǎn)離彼此。?

So we've got a little bit more space. How about this guy? What is this guy? I don't know. Maybe it's just a lollipop and put something like this. and everybody knows this shape.?

P5 - 01:30棒棒糖的形狀。?

If you put a little highlight here, it’s balloons, you never know. But at least you know what what this object can be just by changing its shape. ?

P5 - 01:43棒棒糖或氣球。?

And you can say this object was giant, but this one is a small one.?

P5 - 01:49或大或小的。?

Or you can still put something like this. What is this thing? I don't know. But if you just put like a couple of indicators. there is an underwater mine. I don't know if you guys remember those times, but they had this underwater mines where the ships above. And these guys are go off. So this is an underwater mine. ?

P5 - 02:18加入指示物變成水雷。?

How about this guy? I don't know. so far we keep a manmade stuff, but let's just take out some. So what is this? Ok. This is a back man. just by doing smaller adjustment. with the shape of the object, you can completely change the stories.?

let’s just carry on a couple of more. Let's put it on another one. What was this one? Just by introducing different things. Maybe it's a hair man. Like if you do something like this. ? Just a couple of different things. And it's done,?

and just by it amending or cutting it out, you can dramatically change those things. this is a death star. It's kind of similar, but this one has this big stick. So now we know this is a lollipop and this is probably the death star. ?

So you see it simple is always good. And just by painting, drawing simple shape, You can tell a lot of stories. this is all for shape. And let's just move on.?

1. Design Principles---2-3.Form

P6 - 00:01?

form is not a very important design element. so basically, this lecture i'll show you different very straightforward ways how to show your form.?

P6 - 00:15非常直接的方法展示形式。?

So let's open this example here. So for me, there are three ways to actually show form, light, texture, and cross section.?

P6 - 00:26燈光 材質(zhì) 橫截面。?

So let me just quickly show case each one of those. light is very straightforward. For example, if you put the light, let’s say we wanna do is sphere.?

P6 - 00:38燈光放在球體上。?

Because without form, we really don't know how this looks like. It just looks like a disc. it looks just like a flat form.?

P6 - 00:48像是平面形狀。?

But once you put the channel Information and let's say like put the balance like.?

P6 - 00:53放入平衡色。?

Now you can understand. This is a spherical object.?

P6 - 00:58這是球體。?

And like if you want to do it properly, you make a grayscale version.?

pain like this then you put some highlight.? and then you bring some balance like this.?

Now you can understand this is spherical object. It has really nice form, it’s round. ?

This the most straightforward way showing your form.?

Let’s say how texture look like? Let’s say the light is very flat. Let’s say you don’t have any lighting information.?

Or Let's say that this is a self illuminated surface like sun.?

P6 - 01:46或者太陽自發(fā)光的。?

There is no way to put shading on the sun because it's glowing.?

P6 - 01:50發(fā)光的太陽不能放陰影。?

if it's glowing how we are supposed to see the form.?

P6 - 01:54如果發(fā)光的可以看到形式。 ?

There is a way to do it. Like, let's put a really simple texture, that's just meaning the texture of the sun. We don't need to do anything precise and crazy.?

P6 - 02:06比如接下來是太陽的材質(zhì)。 ?

Put something like color dodge. Let’s do it very simple texture. It’s round, but you can’t not tell it’s sphere or not.?

P6 - 02:44高亮。顏色是球形或圓形。?

You just need to distort the texture. Select use one of the filters. ?

P6 - 02:55扭曲材質(zhì)用濾鏡。?

let’s go distortion rise. Now you can see the texture warps around. So if you keep applying you'll see that the actual texture starts to deform. So let's put it like this smaller.?

P6 - 03:15材質(zhì)扭曲的,可以放小一點。?

And then you will see clearly that it's a round object. Now you can see it because. For example, if it was layer with the clouds, it was the planet.?

P6 - 03:36比如云彩籠罩在星球上。?

You can easily see the it is the spherical object. And there is not much of lighting Information on this case.?

P6 - 03:46沒有太多光的信息。?

But you can still see that these guys a spherical one. And the last one would be cross section,?

P6 - 03:52最后看橫截面。?

because remember, I was saying that simple is good. Let's say you're doing a line drawing and you don't wanna get very complicated with the light with the texture.?

P6 - 04:02光和材質(zhì)是無法混合的。?

All you need is just the surface, line Information. And without the cross section, it's really difficult to tell if what form this object has.?

P6 - 04:14沒有橫截面很難有形狀。?

So just by putting a very small, very quick cross sections. I would say you put one like this,? So you already know this is a spherical object that you put on things like. It doesn't need to be perfect. It's not like a rocket science. We're not building proper perspective.?

P6 - 04:40不用按照視角線一樣精確。?

But all you need is to keep in mind the perspective. Put those cross sections, and then once you put the cross sections, you will know what shape this subject is. ?

P6 - 04:51放上橫截面有立體感了。?

what form part of this object has? So it's all about cross sections. And using cross sections, you can also show the direction.?

P6 - 05:03有橫截面就展示出方向來。?

let's say you've got like a cylindrical form, Ok. Right now, it's just simple shape without no direction to it.?

P6 - 05:16立柱,沒有方向。?

And you can change it so easily. If you just start putting a cross sections, it will change my brush mode.?

P6 - 05:25改變刷子模式。?

And not just by putting those cross section. You can easily see that this object is facing that way or this way. It doesn't matter that it's not a flat object.? ?

P6 - 05:45不是二維的物體沒關(guān)系。?

And if, for example, you go further and start introducing a little bit of lighting Information. Let’s make this darker.?

P6 - 06:01這是燈光信息,變得更暗。?

Let’s change the texture, if this is metal. which is doesn't really catch the light,?

because it is reflecting everything, but you can still show the form because you do this.?

And now it’s a cylindrical object. So by using three of those, we were able to show actually this form looks like. And this could be based on your product design or some part of your car or whatever.?

So we started very simple just with the shape. You can even more simple. And just to the line drawing. And then we will put you use light detection cross section to show the actual form of this guy.?

P6 - 06:59放入燈光來展示形狀。?

So let's just move on. And I will show you the more advanced example. Like, let's say you just use the lighting, It is the lighting. And you do this guy, right? It's a very simple sphere. And you understand its position in 3D space, because you've got lighting Information.?

P6 - 07:17燈光展示物理空間關(guān)系。?

And now you can move your sphere. And you can see the way it interacts. The shadow goes. Everything tells you that this is a spherical object, the balance light, the highlight, the terminator shadows.Everything just says it's a spherical object above the flat surface.?

P6 - 07:44燈光 高光 平衡陰影展示球體。?

But to tell you a story, it's not enough. Like you would ask yourself, how big is this sphere? what is this place? What is your story? And just by using lighting, you explain the form. ?

P6 - 08:02大小位置,用燈光展示出形狀。?

And you already start telling a story. But when you put the texture on top of it, you can completely change to a user interacts with your story and I did a really quick test. And I put the texture. It's the same composition, same forms. But it's a completely different story. ?

P6 - 08:21放入不同的材質(zhì),講述完全不同。?

Now instead of having a flat plane and instead of being like a small table size of surface, this is a moon. It's a huge and we know just by seeing the texture, this is a big scenery.?

P6 - 08:36大月亮和大背景。?

and also the way you forms interact with each other, tells you that, for example, this is a nerve and at ease behind the horizon. So there is there are miles between these guys and this guy. And this completely changed her story. ?
