The United States is facing a critical moment: Artificial intelligence (Al) technology is rapidlaccelerating in capability, and being deployed in more contexts with increasing use cases, both in thepublic and private realms. This is a moment of both significant opportunity and complexity. OuCommittee has come into fruition at a time when our nation can and must position itself as a globaleader in trustworthy,inclusive, and responsible Al.

The National Artificial lntelligence Advisory Committee (NAlAC) first convened in May 2022.NAIACconsists of 26 eading experts in A listed below) who have been tasked to advise the President anothe White House National A lnitiative Office (NAllO). Committee members have experience across awide range of domains, from industry to academia to civil society. ln their service on the NAlACCommittee members provide expertise and actionable steps for Al policy and related activities 一 howwe develop Al, govern it, and ensure it is equitably created, accessed, and deployed. This work isintended to guide the U.S. government in leveraing Al in a uniquely American way -- one thatprioritizes democratic values and civil liberties, while also increasing opportunity.

This is the first forma NAlAC report, and covers the first year of our three-year appointment. Thereport is parsed into four major themes: ) Leadership in Trustworthy Artificia intelligence; (2_eadership in Research and Development; (3) Supporting the U.S. Workforce and ProvidingOpportunity;and (4)International Cooperation
