????????在純黑背景上，布滿了密密麻麻的白色文字，仔細(xì)看，可以發(fā)現(xiàn)這是一連串的死亡數(shù)字集合↓↓
2020年2月29日，死亡1例；
3月2日，死亡5例；
4月14日，死亡2455例；
4月15日，死亡2609例；
4月16日，死亡2176例；
……
9月8日，死亡445例

????????整個封面，記錄了美國從2月29日到9月8日的每日新增死亡病例數(shù)，這些數(shù)據(jù)又匯成一個觸目驚心的碩大數(shù)字——200000，呈現(xiàn)出美國新冠死亡病例數(shù)即將接近20萬的現(xiàn)實。
????????而在封面下方，唯一的紅色字體寫著“一場美國式失敗”（An American Failure）。
“希望這個封面能喚醒麻木的人們”
????????對于這個封面，《時代》周刊主編愛德華·費爾森塔爾在一篇文章中解釋說：美國很快就將跨越一個毀滅性的里程碑——有20萬人因新冠肺炎而死。
That death toll – equivalent to US?deaths in more than three Vietnams, or the entire population of Salt Lake City – is the world’s largest by far.

費爾森塔爾介紹道：
For this week’s US cover, we turned to artist John Mavroudis, who – using?data from the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center?–?handwrote the death counts in America on every one of the 193 days between Feb 29, the first confirmation of a COVID-related death in the US, and Sept 8, as it neared time to go to press.
我們邀請了藝術(shù)家約翰·馬夫魯?shù)纤惯M(jìn)行了這次封面創(chuàng)作，他根據(jù)約翰·霍普金斯大學(xué)發(fā)布的新冠疫情統(tǒng)計數(shù)據(jù)，親手書寫了自2月29日（即美國第一例死亡病例公布日期）起到9月8日（即本刊發(fā)行前夕）期間——總共193天里的美國每日新增死亡病例數(shù)。
封面設(shè)計者馬夫魯?shù)纤拐f，希望這份封面能喚醒麻木的人們：
“I really hope this cover is a wake-up call for those who are numbed to this catastrophe,” says Mavroudis. “Science and common sense are the answers to this crisis.”

????????據(jù)悉，這是《時代》雜志歷史上第二次使用黑色邊框封面，上一次還是在“9·11”恐怖襲擊之后。
“一場美國式失敗”
????????《時代》雜志在封面故事中寫道：這場“美國式的失敗”絕大部分要歸咎于美國政府的失責(zé)。
If, early in the spring, the US?had mobilized its ample resources and?expertise?in a coherent national effort to prepare for the virus, things might have turned out differently.
如果，美國在今春早些時候就動員起國內(nèi)的豐富資源和專業(yè)技術(shù)，在全國范圍內(nèi)同心協(xié)力地應(yīng)對疫情，那么如今的情況可能會有所不同。
If, in midsummer, the country had doubled down on the measures (masks, social-distancing rules, restricted indoor activities and public gatherings) that seemed to be working, instead of prematurely declaring victory, things might have turned out differently.?
如果，美國在仲夏時加大力度執(zhí)行那些行之有效的防疫措施，如戴口罩、保持社交距離、限制室內(nèi)活動與公共聚會等，而不是過早宣布勝利，那么如今的情況可能會有所不同。
The tragedy is that if science and common sense solutions were united in a national, coordinated response, the US?could have avoided many thousands of more deaths this summer.
悲劇在于，如果全國能協(xié)調(diào)一致，在新冠疫情面前給出符合科學(xué)和常識的解決方案，那么今年夏天美國本可以避免數(shù)千人的死亡。
