Dust devils rising in Jezero Crater on Mars. NASA's Perseverance Rover touched down in 2021 equipped with the most sophisticated dust sensors yet flown to Mars. It collected data on the aeolian processes in the roughly 45-km-wide Jezero Crater and recorded large amounts of highly active wind patterns. Using this data, Newman et al. quantify the processes that raise dust and maintain the ubiquitous Martian dust haze.

Artistic rendering of the animal basement membrane, an extracellular structure that surrounds most tissues. Basement membranes exist across the animal kingdom but are yet to be fully understood. Using bioinformatic and in vivo approaches, Jayadev et al. defined a network of 222 human proteins, and the related genes in other species, that constitute basement membranes. By screening more than 63,000 genomes from families with rare disorders, the authors identified genes that regulate basement membrane composition and function. This framework could lead to earlier detection, more accurate prognosis, and new therapies for basement membrane-related disease.

A male Jackson's three-horned chameleon from Kenya. Capable of dynamic color changes, some of these chameleons were shipped to Oahu, Hawaii in 1972 intended for pet trade. However, the chameleons escaped and became established on the island. Whiting et al. observed that, in an environment with few lizard predators compared to Kenya, the Hawaiian chameleons evolved more striking display and anti-predator color states. The results suggest an upper threshold to signal intensity constrained by natural selection, even in species capable of dynamic color change.

Fluorescent dye courses through the channels of a microfluidic device. When embedded with stimuli-responsive materials, devices such as this one can respond to temperature, humidity and light. Inspired by plant vasculature, Pan et al. developed a microfluidic device able to fold along a preset origami-like pattern in response to light. Stimuli-responsive morphing devices offer the possibility of intelligent soft devices and artificial vasculature for industrial and biomimetic applications.
