lots of students who take the IELTS exam
tell us about the common topic of friends
family and relationships
let's start by looking at some useful vocabulary
and language
that you can use during your AILT speaking exam
this topic is very common
so I'm going to give you
some more advanced words to help you get a better mark
teaching time
get on with or get on well with
this means that you have a good relationship with someone
let's put it into practice
I get on well with my brother
repeat after me
I get on well with my brother
close family bond
a bond is a relationship that you have with somebody
now let's put it into practice
we have a close family bond at home
and now it's your turn
repeat after me
we have a close family bond at home
to be like chalk and cheese
this is an advanced phrase
that you can use to talk about 2 people
who are different
so if your sister and your brother are different
you can say they are like chalk and cheese
so my brother and sister are like chalk and cheese
now it's your turn
repeat after me
my brother and sister are like chalk and cheese
so there are some of the
phrases that you can use in the exam
now I'd like to look at some of the recent questions
and then I'll give you some example answers
shall we start
example questions and answers
do you have a large family
to be honest my family is pretty small
it's just me and my parents
I kind of wish that I had a brother or sister
do you have a best friend
I used to have a best friend when I was younger
but now I just have a close circle of friends
rather than just one best friend
is it more important to have family or friends
from my own personal point of view
I think it's better to have both
I get on really well with my family
but I couldn't live without my friends
I enjoy hanging out with them all the time
and sometimes I share some secrets with them
how often do you speak to your friends or family
if you speak to them very often you could say
I speak to them all the time
if you speak to them now and again
you could say I speak to them once or twice a week
and if you don't speak to them very often
you could say
not as often as I should
or about once or twice a month
let's learn some new vocabulary
vocabulary ideas
do you know the word siblings
siblings is just the word for your brother
or your sister
so the examiner may ask you
do you have any siblings
what about the words
extended family or nuclear family
well your extended family are your uncles your aunties
cousins grandparents
and your nuclear family
is just your parents and your siblings
how do you explain that your parents are
no longer married
well you could say they are divorced or separated
and what about if one of your family members has died
well you could say
I lost my father
or my mother passed away
so to lose somebody or somebody passed away
shall we look at a few more questions and answers
example questions and answers
do you often argue with your family
well I think with most families
there's some level of disagreement
when I was younger
my brother and I used to fight all the time
we used to fight like cats and dogs
but nowadays we're more mature
and we get on really well
