The Beginning of the World?

In the remote ages, 上古時代

the world was in complete 天地不分

indistinguishable chaos 混沌一片

like a giant egg. 整個宇宙像一個巨大的雞蛋

Pan Gu,creator of the universe, 而開天辟地的祖先盤古

was born in it . 就孕育在這只巨蛋里

He grew bigger and stronger 他在蛋中沉睡了一萬八千年

when sleeping in it for over 18000 years.

身體也漸漸長大、健壯起來

One day,Pan Gu suddenly woke up

一天,盤古突然醒來了

and saw nothing but darkness around him.

他睜開眼睛卻發(fā)現(xiàn)周圍一片漆黑,什么也看不見

Enraged by the narrowness and darkness,

面對黑暗狹小的空間, 盤古勃然大怒

Pan Gu grabbed a big axe out of nowhere

他不知從哪兒抓起一把大斧子

and slashed around him vigorously.

使勁力氣對著這黑暗一陣亂砍

With a deafening blare shaking the world,

只聽天崩地裂的一聲巨響

the giant egg was split up

巨蛋被劈開了

and from it something clear and light ascended,

一些清而輕的東西慢慢上升

while something turbid and heavy descended,

另外一些濁而重的東西慢慢下沉

turning into the heaven and earth respectively.

分別變成了天空和大地

Being afraid of their folding-up again,

盤古擔(dān)心天地還會合攏

Pan Gu stood and hung in there

他就站起身來

with his head up to sky

頭頂藍天

and his feet down to earth

腳踩大地,撐在天地當(dāng)中

As the world continued to be expanded,

隨著天地不斷被撐開

Pan Gu grew in height as well.

盤古的身體也不斷變長

For another 18000 years in this way,

就這樣又過了一萬八千年

the heaven and earth were finally fixed

天地終于被固定住, 不再增長了

when Pan Gu ' s height stopped increasing

盤古也長到了九萬里長

at 90000 Li.

However ,Pan Gu was exhausted

可是盤古辛辛苦苦撐了這么久

and slammed down

耗盡了力氣

after such strenuous work for such a long time.

他"轟"的一聲倒下去,再也沒能站起來

With his death,

隨著盤古的死去

his body underwent marvelous changes.

他的身體發(fā)生了奇妙的變化

HIs breath turned into the wind and cloud,

他嘴里呼出的氣變成了風(fēng)和云

his voice into thunder ;

聲音變成了雷鳴

his left eye into the sun

左眼變成了太陽

while his right eye into the moon;

右眼幻化成月亮

his limbs and body

四肢和身體

into the four poles of the earth

變成了大地的四極

and five mountains;

和五岳名山

his blood into rivers and lakes ;

血液成為江河湖海

veins into thoroughfares,

筋脈變?yōu)橥ㄍ敬蟮?/p>

muscle into fertile soil,

肌肉化為肥田沃土

skin into flowers and trees;

皮膚變?yōu)榛ú輼淠?/p>

his teeth and bones

牙齒和骨頭

into various metals and stones,

也變成了各類金屬和石頭

marrow into pearls and jewelry,

骨髓成了珍珠寶石

sweat into rain and shower.

汗水變成了雨露甘霖

The rudiment of the beautiful world was formed.

美麗世界的雛形形成了

This is one of the oldest legends

of Chinese nation

盤古開天辟地是中華民族最古老的傳說之一

Later generations commemorate

后人也通過多種方式

and recall Pan Gu in different ways.

來紀(jì)念和緬懷盤古

30 li south of Biyang country ,Henan province

在河南泌陽縣南三十里

lies a Pangu Mountain.

有一座盤古山

The Pangu Mountain Temple Fair is held

每年農(nóng)歷三月初三

every year on the 3rd day

都要舉行盤古山廟會

of the 3rd lunar month ,

and on that day

這一天

people from all directions

人們會從四面八方

will gather here for worship

到這里進行祭拜

and blessing activities.
