How I Started to Making Films
(一)You Must Do What You Are Called to Do
(二) Watch the Old Masters
Martin's Education
(一)Learn by doing
went to NYU in 1960
met my teacher named Haig Manoogian
He'd show a film, and if he thought a student was just there to waste time, just take it easy and watch movies, he'd throw them out basically.
(二) Find your individual voice
About filmmaking, he really focused on the individual voice, the individual stories that you felt that you had to tell.
He wouldn't let anyone direct unless they had written the film themselves.
He was encouraging everyone to express themselves and protect that spark in themselves, and not be influenced by other kinds of filmmaking.
(三)The value of a shot
"motion pictures"
Trying to get for us to understand what is the potential of the moving image and the cut.
The shot is a value in and of itself.
No matter what you shot it for, it may not matter.
It takes on its own life.
(四) A great teacher can give you confidence
The inspiration and the ability to give you the confidence if you have Sth. that you really feel passionate about.
Discovering Your Process
(一)There isn't just one process.
Besides those common sense, lots of things differed.
One point: You must rely on those who know how to get the things done.
(二)Stay open while making your film
Allowing the film to have its own life at times, and for us to take advantage of the possibility of special things that would happen within the scene, with the actresses with the camera, all of this.
"The picture itself takes over in a way."
One point: We need to stay alive to what's happening in front of you.
