UNDERGRADUATE LIFE AT CHURCHILL
With exceptional特別的杰出的 on-campus facilities, Churchill College is a vibrant hub of activity. An active student body, a wide range of clubs and societies, and a calendar of College social events provide many opportunities to meet new people and make lasting friendships.

HISTORY, WOMEN AND ART – WHAT MAKES CHURCHILL UNIQUE??

History?
Founded by Royal Charter in 1960, Churchill College is the national and Commonwealth memorial to Sir Winston Churchill, Britain’s great wartime Prime Minister — the embodiment of his vision for how higher education can benefit society in the modern age. Announced in 1958, it was the first Cambridge college to be named after a living person from its foundation. A national appeal was launched to raise £3.5 million (equivalent to about £75 million today) to build and endow Churchill College, chiefly addressed to British industry. In the end, two thousand British companies and individuals contributed. Today, the College is home to the Churchill Archives Centre, which was purpose-built in 1973 to house Sir Winston Churchill’s Papers, and is now home to the papers of almost 600 important political, military and scientific figures from the Churchill era and after.

Women at Churchill?
Churchill College was at the frontline of dramatically expanding female participation in Cambridge University: it was the first of the formerly all-male Cambridge colleges to vote to admit women, with the initial cohort of female students arriving in 1972. Since 1972 women have formed a core and essential part of our community, being heavily represented in the College students’ unions, in sport, music, drama, art and many other areas of extra-curricular activity, all while achieving outstanding academic results. There is a strong female presence on the College’s Fellowship, and many of its academics most focused upon working closely with students (Directors of Studies, for instance) are women. The current Master, Professor Dame Athene Donald, is the first woman to hold this role in the College, and is determined that during her tenure the proportion of women students in the College should grow towards parity with men.
Artwork?
Over the last fifty years Churchill College has developed an outstandingly eccentric collection of modern and contemporary art. The College made a commitment to modern art from the outset. Across the site we have sculptures, paintings, prints and textiles displayed indoors, including some works by Churchill himself. Recently acquired highlights include prints by Patrick Caulfield, Tony Bevan, Gary Hume, Albert Irvin, John Hoyland and David Nash. These hang alongside the earlier efforts of the College’s Hanging Committee, including sets of prints by Barbara Hepworth, Bridget Reilly and Andy Warhol.
OUR ACCOMMODATION, YOUR HOME?

Churchill is able to guarantee you on-site accommodation for the full duration of your three or four-year degree. It’s one of the key advantages of Churchill and helps give us our strong sense of community.
Living on campus means that you can easily access all of Churchill’s facilities and support services, leaving you free to concentrate on your studies and enjoy the benefits of life in College and at Cambridge.

As an undergraduate here, you would live in a communal court within the College’s spacious gardens and sports grounds. Rooms are arranged around staircases shared by students from different year and subject groups. This allows you to meet a diverse range of people from across the College.
Rooms are modern, spacious, light, and warm. Over 40% have en suite facilities. All have access to excellent shared bathrooms and laundry facilities, as well as free wireless internet. Simple meals can be prepared in snack kitchens, which contain combination microwaves and fridges, but no ovens or freezers. We are a catered college with subsidised meal options for a great variety of dietary requirements. Eating in our Dining Hall is encouraged and an important part of life at Cambridge.
There are five rooms which have been adapted for wheelchair users or those with restricted mobility. Prices vary with size and facilities, but all are affordable. For a breakdown of our rent charges, see the fees and costs page on our website. Rent is payable for just 30 weeks and includes heating and internet. You will be able to choose the type of room you would like in an annual room ballot, and while we can’t guarantee you your first choice of room, you will be allocated a room to suit your needs and budget.
WHY YOU SHOULD JOIN A SOCIETY AT CHURCHILL?

With an on-site gym, library, the largest dining hall of any Cambridge College and our bar, sports facilities and music rehearsal facilities including a recording studio, Churchill College is a vibrant hub of activity spread across 42 acres. We even have an on-site bike repair shop – Blazing Saddles – in case you ever get a pesky puncture on your travels around town.
At Churchill College, societies are the best way to get to know people, and there is literally something for everyone. Fancy something sporty? We have an onsite gym, tennis and squash courts and huge sports fields. The fact that our sports fields are onsite make all of our sports teams (from football and athletics to ultimate frisbee and water polo) really inclusive as everyone can train together just a few metres from their accommodation. We also have a very successful boat club that races in pink boats, making it really easy to spot and cheer on the Churchill crews during bumps.
Fancy something a bit less cardio focused? We’ve got your back. There are regular film nights that can be held in the 300-seat Wolfson Theatre, a fortnightly PAV (a college disco), a garden party in the summer and, often, music nights in our bar. Music-wise, there are multiple college bands, orchestras and a chapel choir, encouraging any level of commitment you want to give. Our dedicated college drama society, GODS, regularly organise plays and the annual JCR panto, and we’ve not even touched on the Churchill Casino, Gaming Society, Garden Society, Feminist Society and so much more…
Be part of Churchill, in whichever way suits you.
