I would throw it into a container full of other paper clips.

Eh.
I need to bake bread anyway. I do it without kneading the dough, just put more water in it and let it rise overnight.
I put it in the oven about twenty minutes before he is due to arrive, so it’s nice and hot enough to burn any detective foolish enough to sift through it.
If the detective goes through all of my house including the 2 liters worth of an icky sticky goo heated to searing temperatures, in an hour he can have the paperclip.

That depends.
If the detective’s job is to find a *specific* paperclip then I’m going to place it in a bathtub full of identical paperclips. Good luck finding the right one, b!tch.
If it’s to find *a* paperclip… then I’m going to pop one of the hooks off of the curtains and replace it with a paper clip by hooking it through a slider.
#devious.

One lazy Saturday morning, I wake up to find a slip of paper beside me with a paperclip on me.
“You have exactly 23 minutes to hide this paperclip, starting now.”
Across the room, a timer of 23 minutes started. Panicking, I run to the closest store that sells paperclips with some money to buy around 100 of them. 10 minutes left.
Then, I put the paperclips everywhere, and make sure to put one in my pocket.
I get out my viola and put one in. Then, I get out my old violin and tape the actual paperclip in there (probably at the top so nobody can see it) and put a decoy in there too. I put the violin back in the corner of the closet.
Then, I open the top of the piano and tape one to the side of it. Then one behind the TV. A few in front of the TV. A few in the kitchen drawers. Some more in random hiding spots. I also fabricate some possible hiding spots (as in leaving dust tracks, making things seem just used, leaving a few tools lying around somewhere).
After that, I just scatter the paper clips in random hiding spots. I put one in my phone case and one in the metronome.
0 minutes left.

…
The detective comes into my house. First, they make me turn out my pockets. I fake a panicked and guilty look as I flip out my pockets and hold the paperclip in my hand (because the detective would know it’s a decoy if I just show it). Then, I quickly hide it in my sleeve and hold the sleeve by the cuff. The detective isn’t pleased and grabs the cuff. The paperclip falls out.
I let them sit in their glory for around a minute and then give them the “no that wasn’t it” talk. 57 minutes left.
Then, the detective goes to check all the bags. They see the viola lying in plain sight. They go through everything (and given the amount of violence) it may or may not get broken. Or the detective finds a paperclip by shaking it around and finds a paperclip.
“Ya think you’re so clever,” I say, laughing.
The detective then goes into my closet. Gets out the violin, does the same. This time, I pretend to be guilty again (as in telling them not to touch it and stuff). Thank goodness I had disturbed the dust there a bit, just to throw them off, but then, I messed around with the entire house.
Then, they spot the screwdriver next to my metronome. They take apart the metronome, and discover the paperclip. “That’s not it,” I say, laughing.
By this point, at least 30 minutes would have passed, and the detective had already checked the violin. I pretend to be vigilant and continue to follow the detective around.
Finally, the hour is up and the detective gives up. “Where is it?” they ask.
I get a long thin flexible rod and fish it out of the violin, making sure that I take the tape off, too.
Fooled you, I shouted as I push the detective outside the door and slam it in their face. They didn’t even find all the paper clips I hid. This was a piece of cake, until I realize that I’d be finding random paperclips in my house for years on end.
Edit: well, this thing completely blew up overnight. So I think I’ll add a warning here. If for some reason you’re given 23 minutes to hide a paperclip, don’t sue me if these ideas don’t work.
Edit 2: don’t put a paperclip inside your instruments. Don’t sue me if someone tells you to hide a paperclip in 23 minutes and then you tape it inside some instrument and can’t get it out.
…
run like the wind, but every once in a while, remember to stop and look back

I would give it to my 15yo son, and ask him to “put it away in his room, please.”
If the detective would like to bring friends, I’ll happily give them tea if they agree to let me know if they also find his iPad.

One detective? With one hour?
This is really easy, even if the detective is Sherlock Holmes—people underestimate how long a thorough search can take.
I’m going to make myself a few additional rules, just to eliminate some of the really cheap options:
The paperclip must be both detectable and retrievable without damaging or disassembling the house or any obxt in it (e.g., no plastering it into the wall, or sewing it inside the lining of a suit jacket, or dropping it into a crack in the floorboards). [Opening or removing parts of obxts that are meant to be frequently opened or removed does not count.]
The hiding place cannot be hazardous to the detective in any way (e.g., no dropping it in the garbage disposal or sticking it in a live electrical socket).
The paperclip cannot itself be altered in any way (e.g., no unbending it to make it into a straight wire or painting it to camouflage).
There can only be one paperclip in the house, including any obxt that could easily be mistaken for a paperclip (i.e., no decoys).
It cannot be hidden on my person, nor can the hiding place involve any other living creature (e.g., no hiding it in an orifice, inside my shoe, or under a pet’s collar).
On the other hand, to avoid cheap solutions in the opposite direction, I’m going to assume that the detective has no special equipment like metal detectors or imaging devices—he has to search with his own senses.
With those rules in mind, here are just a few hiding places that come readily to mind:
Taped to the top side of a drop-ceiling panel.
Taped behind the upper doorfrx of a hanging cabinet.
Sewn to the inside of a t-shirt in the hamper (with just a few threads, so that it can be removed without harming the shirt).
Taped to the back side of a filter screen of an air conditioner.
Inside a mustard bottle in the refrigerator.
Taped to the back wall of a full freezer, behind the back edge of the shelf.
Hung by a nail from the far side of a roof beam in the dark side of the attic.
Taped to the inside of a recessed light socket (between the bulb and the housing, not in the electrical socket).
Inside a shampoo bottle.
