Q. How much do high school grades matter to a 4 year college? (Please read details) I'm currently at a community college and getting good grades. problem is when I was in high school my gpa was 1.9. Now it's 3.3 after 1 year of college. I’m hoping to transfer to James Madison. I want to know how much my grades in high school will impact getting in versus my grades in college.
A. JMU has guaranteed admissions agreements with all Virginia community colleges and Richard Bland College. Under the GAA, admission to JMU is guaranteed to a student who completes an appropriate associate degree, has a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, and meets additional requirements as outlined in the individual agreements.

More broadly, JMU considers transfer applicants' college courses, college grade-point average, high-school program, and high-school grades. The more credit hours you have earned in college, the less emphasis is placed on your high-school record.
You have a good chance if you are attending a Virginia Community College and maintain your current GPA. Listed are the scores of high school seniors who applied to JMU and admission decisions for 2021. You will have to rely on your Community College record. The applicants denied admissions had unweighted GPA of 2.94 and 3.02. Deferred had 2.50 and 3.43. You did not list your SAT/ACT scores.
All the best!

It depends on your coursework, how long you’ve been in community college (CC) and the destination 4-year-college.
In general, your CC grades will count more than your HS grades, especially after two years in CC.
Transferring credits can sometimes be an issue.
Be sure to consult the college to which you are applying for their requirements.
The longer you are in CC, the more the CC grades will count relative to HS grades.

A student wants me to change her grade because her college admission will be revoked if I post the "D" she's earned. What should I consider?
This has actually happened to me twice in the last 3 years. One girl came to me, and asked me to change her grade from 2 years before because she would lose a full ride at UCLA if the D remained on her report card… Another student said he couldn’t fail my class because they would revoke his admission to SDSU. I gave both of them the same answer, and got the same result.
I said, “Great, bring me a letter from the university explaining your situation. Then we can discuss it.” The one with the full ride for UCLA told me she would be back the next day, I am still waiting, that was the year before last. The other student, from last year, brought in a letter apologizing for lying to me. I accepted his apology, and gave him the grade he earned.
This is a hard one. I’d hate to be the one to break a kid’s life, but I would certainly make them PROVE what they were telling me. I would certainly make them do WORK to make up for their missing work.

YES, THEY ABSOLUTELY DO!
Don’t believe anyone who says it doesn’t, because they sure as fuck do.
Here’s why.
I scored 94% odd in my 10th board exams and I barely scraped through the cut off list in Army Public School, Guwahati after someone in the third waiting list dropped out.
I scored 85% in my +2 boards and didn’t make it through the college I badly wanted in Delhi. In fact, my grades were the reason I had to leave Delhi and move to Calcutta.
I scored barely 52% odd in my BSc. I have an honors in Physics and for those who know Calcutta University, well, I’m a survivor. And this was way back in 2007–08.
Later, I interviewed for MSc positions in many colleges and universities that I badly wanted to go to.
I was laughed at and ridiculed by some of the country’s best colleges for my “poor” scores and was told by many other top institutes that “people who apply here usually score 80% and above!”
I answered every question thrown at me, I solved every problem asked of me, and I even threw light on a few alternate approaches to basic physics problems in kinematics, thermodynamics, and electromagnetism at a few places. Yet, my scores, or the lack of it, were questioned.

I finally had to settle for a piece of shit university, where the course content was nothing but a joke.
Later, I scored 80% in my masters and I barely broke a sweat (thanks to a rigorous undergraduate curriculum).
When I applied for research positions to professors across the country and abroad, I was always asked ONE thing:
What happened during your Bachelor’s? Did someone die? Were you on drugs? Girlfriend(s)?
Every…fucking…time.
2 years after I finished my master’s, I cracked a national level exam, got through a decent institute in a project I truly loved and started working on my PhD.
But not before I was asked, What happened during your Bachelor’s?

So, well, grades DO matter.
Ask that kid who’s IIT dreams got squashed because he didn’t score 60% in his +2.
Ask that friend of yours who missed cracking the IIT-JEE by 1 mark.
Ask that super smart, highly intelligent inventor friend of yours why he failed his board exams or university exams because he felt learning from text books was obsolete and redundant.
Ask the son of a poor farmer who scored 75% in his 12th grade exams, studying under a streetlamp, only to realise that he was 5% short of getting a scholarship to go for his higher studies.
Again, like it or not, grades DO matter.
At least in India, they do.
