Hi everyone, it's Rosie. Welcome to Radiohead Space and to Friday. Our week on self-compassion is coming to an end and as usual, I want to discuss a topic we can all relate to rejection and the powerful role that self-compassion plays in helping us navigate it.

On that note, I was recently in a situation where I didn't get a job that I really wanted. For months I went through interviews and tests and everything was pointing in the right direction. Then I got the news. An email that started with, unfortunately, told me everything I needed to know.

My initial reaction was to blame myself and spiral into self-criticism, so I decided to clear my head and go for a long walk around my LA neighborhood and I stopped at a gathering of fallen palm fronds. Their weathered and sunburnt leaves told stories of resilience.

Just like these leaves, life goes through seasons of growth, shedding, and rebirth. It was a gentle reminder that my journey too is a process of continuous transformation. Self-compassion is not just about being gentle with ourselves in moments of disappointment, but also about finding inspiration in the beauty and resilience of the world around us. It's a reminder that even when we stumble or face rejection, there is always the potential for growth and renewal.

This experience of not getting the job reminded me of a similar situation that happened earlier in my journey. I vividly remember when I applied to teach at my first choice yoga studio. I was passionate about sharing the practice of yoga and felt deeply aligned with their values of inclusivity and acceptance. The interview process went well, but as time passed, I didn't receive a call. When I gathered the courage to call and check-in, they told me I wasn't fit enough to teach at their studio, which completely contradicts their mission of inclusivity.

Instead of internalizing their judgment and allowing it to define me, I chose to extend compassion to myself. I remember that the opinions of others do not define my value or my capabilities, so I channeled my energy into finding other teaching opportunities that aligned with my values. I sought out studios and communities that celebrated diversity and embraced individuals of all shapes and sizes and abilities. I learned that not every door we knock on will open, but that doesn't diminish our worth or the impact we can make in other spaces. And in the end, we can even find greater fulfillment.

So with all that said, here are a couple of ways you can practice self-compassion in the face of rejection. First, cultivate resilience through self-compassion. Practice self-care, surround yourself with supportive people, and believe in your ability to overcome challenges. And remember, just telling yourself that you can come back from this is the first step forward.

Next, you can look to nature, other people, or even yourself for inspiration. I found solace in fallen palm fronds. I believe that the palm tree is the disco ball of the tree family, and so it makes me happy. But you can look at the evolution of a garden, search for videos about comebacks in business or sports, or think about a time that you recovered from rejection. Seek out the lessons and insights it can offer.

Finally, take action. Rejection can be paralyzing and hinder us from trying again, but self-compassion helps us understand and believe in our power to move on. And that doesn't mean you have to take on the whole world at once. For me, it helps to make a plan for the week that's less intense than I would like. That way, I know I can stick to it. And before you know it, you will have created something new. And if you're looking for more ways to approach failure, check out the getting good at failure and meditation in the app.

As we wrap up, I want to remind you that failure is not the end of the road. You have the power to reframe failure, learn from it, and bounce back even stronger. Until next time, take care, and I'll see you back here soon.
