What happens when a pop star who banks on songs about giving in to the thrill of romance feels done with it??Carly Rae Jepsen?puts forth an answer with “Let’s Be Friends,” a fizzy anti-Valentine’s Day single that finds her on the receiving end of a breakup and all the happier for it. She gladly accepts the canned line that gives the song its title, delivered from guys who “smile like a devil” while she’s busy daydreaming about not holding up her end of the bargain.
Detailed like a brightly colored comic strip, “Let’s Be Friends” doesn’t reach the potent highs of her other work, but as an upbeat one-off that takes pleasure in excising dirtbags from your life, it nails its specific mood. “I had a really nice time with you,” she coos on the spoken-word bridge before an unequivocal chaser: “I mean, you’re sort of a dick sometimes, but someone out there is surely gonna love a dick.” Carly is virtually peerless in finding a silver lining in heartbreak and adds a wry sneer with a light touch to her catalog.
