?46 Lesson 8 - Speedpainting Part 1 - Speedpainting - What is Speedpaintin

P46 - 00:02?

?We are on module eight. My friends, so far in this course. We've done several paintings and we've covered almost everything from black and whites to compositions to color, to painting, to photo bashing, to painting with photos. And now we are here. This is it, guys, the culmination of all these things together.?

speed painting. Give yourself a huge pat on the back for making it this far. I'm not even sure how many people will make it this far, but you, you are one of the chosen ones. So you should relish on it. or don't let them know. Because I don't think that many people use Facebook anymore, as I did on Twitter. I don't know how people just announced that stuff anymore. Like ticktock doesn't even really allow that at all. Anyways. Back to the topic at hand. speed painting. What is speed painting exactly??

Is it concept art? Well, if you Google it, this is what Google would say. Speed painting is an artistic technique where the artist has a limited time to finish the work.?

The time can vary, usually iteration is attached from several minutes to a few hours. Unlike sketches, speed paintings may be considered finished, after the time limit is up. I don't really know why Google sounds kind of like batman butler, but I guess this is my head cannon. ?

I think that's kind of true. But the real truth is that I know you're gonna totally hate me for this. But we don't have a clear definition. Again, there is no master dictionary that we can refer to.?

However, I will say this, speed paintings are called that, because they are meant to be fast. You can also find speed painting on YouTube, where people post their time lapses of their paintings and speed them up significantly.?

However a while. Yes, these are quote, quote speed paintings and. I wouldn't consider them speed paintings from a concept art standpoint. ?

These are like a different category of speed painting, because a person could have spent 20 hours on a painting like this and then just sped it up to 16 minutes.?

But the reality of the fact is that they did well spend 20 hours, in my opinion, a speed painting should be limited to around 2 to 3 hours. Some people can consider it faster or slower. And this is why I mentioned that there is no clear definition.?

for turtles. We humans are extremely fast, but to a mclaren sports car, the human is incredibly slow. unless you're a mclaren is driving at zero miles per hour. But why in the world would you buy a car like a Mclaren is not drive it fast. Anyways. It's all relative.?

I'd say a speed painting. It should be something that is very fast for your own standards, for example, is completely finished Illustration for me, such as the one that you're seeing appear here can take anywhere between 10 to 40 hours, depending on the level of finish. Then my speed painting should be anything less than three hours.?

for you. That number may be different. One thing that Google definitely got right though is that it isn't a sketch or something to be considered unfinished.?

The point of a speed painting is that it is finished, but sometimes it has the appearance of a work in progress, where it's not super tight and it's not super rendered.?

But that is exactly what makes it so appealing. The unfinished quality of it makes it a speed painting. ?

But it's not truly unfinished. It is not like a work in progress. This is simply what the speed painting is. So here's a big important question. What is it used for in the industry??

Well, a multitude of things. It's essentially a very fast painting like noda. So it's perfect for this things like trying to describe a concept or giving the initial mood of a place or doing color keys, or you're mostly worried about the lighting in color and not necessarily the small details.?

Would a speed painting would it not be good for?our solid finish key frames trying to show what the final product could look like in the very end.?

It's definitely not an illustration, unless they specifically ask for something loose and sketchy looking.?

But it is a great skill to have to paint quickly and be able to bring out the core ideas in as little time as possible.?

In fact, I would argue my cinnamon demo, which is a painting that I relatively quickly can be considered a speed painting. For example, if my art director says, hey, I want to explore the possibility of this new environment where our characters are on a lake and I want five different explorations on it.?

This is definitely not the time to be painting a finished illustrating key frame for each other possibilities.?

Instead, you'll probably want to just do a quick speed painting for each to imply what could happen. ?

For me personally. This is also my favorite method of painting. It's just fun. I do speed paintings to relax or to touch up my brushwork or do a master's study. It can be quite relaxing,?

though I also know some people absolutely hated. One thing should be clear though. One can never be good at speed painting. If one is not good at painting,?

like at a normal pace, you can't run. If you don't yet know how to walk,?

and you cannot dance or do ballet, if you don't at least know how to run.?

the speed part of speed painting comes from being very efficient and knowledgeable about your normal painting process. ?

You cannot use it as a place to start your painting process.?

I personally believe that you have to begin slow and slowly ramp up,?

however that being said, in the world, there are always exceptions, and people will always prove me wrong.?

This is just my own personal experience and what i've seen and what works best for most people.?

I don't wanna be the person to tell you what you can or can't do.?

So i'll just say this is a very strong encouragement. Think of it this way. A speed painting is like at a 30 percent quality of your normal finished piece.?

So if you're normal finished piece isn't that fantastic, then your speed painting is only going to be a worse derivative.?

This is why we begin with all of those slower pieces in the start, from the VisDev piece to the photo bashing piece and then to the painting with photo bashing piece.?

By now you should be pretty comfortable with the process and can push it to the limit,?

by putting on your red shoes and doing some iconic Sonic speed times.?

You, however, are now here at modulate. And you have passed through all the gates and all the lessons that have all prepared you for this moment. ?

Unless you skipped ahead and jumped right into here, but you wouldn't do that, right, anyways, for speed painting, I'm going to demonstrate three different paintings and tackle three different scenarios.?

You will soon discover that it's basically everything we've covered so far, except on speed steroids. We're gonna blast through these paintings and we're gonna have fun doing so. because you got all the way here. You deserve it. Your brain deserves it. And your drawing hand also a definitely deserves it. With that. Let's get to work.?

47 Lesson 8 - Speedpainting Part 2 - Brushes Galore P47 - 00:01?

?For my very first painting, I'm going to finally break free of my horizontal shackles and paint a paint, a vertical painting. Oh, my god! This feels incredible! I am finally Free. Just for the first one.?

I'm going to stick with my little red riding hood and Cinderella prompt. And honestly I am so sick of seeing these two images by now. I'm going to abandon this prompt right after I finish this piece and you will be able to abandon this prompt as well. Rejoice! My friend deliberation has begun.?

So Airi, what are you painting? I have decided to paint a scene where Cinderella is undergoing her dress transformation.?

If you've ever seen the disney movie, whether it's the old one or the new one, it's the scene where her old rags get turned into this absolutely gorgeous dress.?

Because I already did a good amount of research into the tang dynasty. I'm going to keep my Cinderella within historical China and show a scene where her dress is getting transformed into a beautiful tang dynasty Han fu in its full glory. ?

Now I'm going to show you is probably the most coveted section of class ever, which is brushes??

Oh, yeah. For anyone not really in the loop. Digital painting brushes are considered, especially for newer artists, like the holy sword excalibur or a magic wand, that is somehow the key to unlocking a great painting.?

It's a very common question that you'll find people asking in fact, go to any professional artist, social media, scroll through the comments. And I guarantee that you will very soon find a question that asks, what brushes do you use? ?

It’s such a common question that at this point many artists find it rude and are extremely annoyed to be asked this question.?

In fact, when the art community going around asking for rushes is kind of akin to begging and looked down upon and within the community.?

The reason for this is because many artists insist that the brush is not what does the work.?

You can effectively use any brush you want to be able to achieve a great painting.?

You could literally create a masterpiece in the MS paint such as this lady. Or you could create a masterpiece in Excel. Like this guy literally made this piece as an Excel. I am not joking. I'm not really sure how he did it either, but I don't think you use any brushes for that.?

So essentially, the tools aren't supposed to matter as much as the painting itself.?

However, I would also argue that brushes really do matter to a certain degree.?

It's kind of like trying to cook soup in a frying pan.?

You're not going to get very far because you're just not using the right equipment. ?

So the same thing for brushes. Sometimes to get a specific texture, you do need that specific brush.?

The key here though, is that a brush at the end of the day is just a tool.?

Even if you have the world's best cooking pot, like over a thousand dollars with an equally expensive Japanese knife. And you're using things like black truffles and you're using sturgeon caviar, if you suck at cooking, then it's not going to taste good, no matter how good that pot or knife is.?

The same thing with brushes, it's going to sting a bit. But if you suck at art, no amount of cool or great brushes will ever be able to help you. ?

That's why I waited all the way until now to go over this. Of course you have access to my brushes from the very start a class, you don't even need to ask. I have provided for you.?

I wouldn't be so cruel as to deprive you of them. But I'm now going to explain them one by one and how I personally use them.?

And the reason I waited until now is because you are now here at modulate, you officially don't suck. You went through each and every single one of the lessons. you understand the fundamental concepts and tried a bunch of pieces by yourself.?

And so now you are ready for more minute things, such as brushes.?

But I needed to make sure that you understood the whole picture about how to make an entire painting first, before we start to focus on the nitty-gritty.?

That being said, real quick. I personally believe that brushes are definitely a good tool and some brushes are indeed better than others.?

But just to be aware, asking someone that you barely know yet for their brushes can be considered quite rude.?

It's like asking a stranger about something personal. Some strangers are happy to share. And some strangers find it very invasive.?

So just be careful and decide for yourself. As always. I don't like to tell people what to do, but anyways, I bet you're at the edge of your seat right now. Drooling over these brushes. So let me hop to it. ?

So I'm gonna show you some of the most common brushes that I use in pretty much all of my paintings and also what kind of setting that I enjoy or any other quirks that people would just love to know about brushes in general.?

Step one is that typically I like to stick to one hundred percent opacity.?

I don't really change the flow. I think that some of the brushes have different flows and I simply use whatever they originally had incorporated to them.?

I only changed opacity if it is a really soft brush that I'm using for gently sweeping over things typically like a post effects brush.?

But for the simple painting, I really don't touch the opacity.?

I just keep it at one hundred percent. So let me show you my giant list of brushes. ?

First of all, these are the hard round brush is that photoshop gives you. When you first start off.?

These are probably some of the brushes that I go to the most. I am not joking, because when it comes to especially things like photo bashing and rendering the soft brushes.? ?

So basically, these guys are some of the best things that you can get because they render really nicely, especially for objects where you don't want a lot of texture.?

Next, over the years, I have accumulated a whole bunch of brushes like so many. So here are some dry media brushes that were included with photoshop. These are also included with photoshop. I have kylie Webster, zinc brushes. I have this whole giant list of brushes and the question is, do I actually use them? And to be quite honest, no, I don't use like any of these brushes. These I don't even know what to do with these. There are so many of them. When I first started a digital painting, I kind of just started to collect brushes like this greedy dragon that was collecting treasure.?

And I just kept collecting brush after brushing after brush. And I realized that I only use like five brushes. So instead of being sending you every single one of these brushes. What is the point? If I don't even use them myself? ?

Therefore, let me introduce I raised essentials. These are my go to 10 brushes like my holy grail.?

And to be honest, I still only use like five of these most of the time.?

But these are the brushes that are my favorite and the ones I always use for painting. And I will now explain them one by one. ?

The first brush is the Kyle t Webster brushes. So for anyone who has an Adobe subscription, you're able to download kyle's brushes for Free because they're essentially an extension of photoshop that you can unlock with your subscription.?

There’re my go to brushes if I’m doing anything sketching or if I'm doing any line work or calligraphy like items or really anything that requires a very nice line.?

So these two are my pretty much go to line work brushes.?

the next is the soft brush. So this is essentially the same thing as the photoshop software round brush except this one. As texture. Sometimes I find that having a little bit of tooth in texture is so so nice.?

But this brush is a soft round brush here is essentially made of tiny dots that is trying to imitate this soft round brush that photoshop has a default. ?

The next brush is still another soft round brush that is essentially the same thing as trying to imitate the photoshop software around except instead of being in a circular motion which is this one is now in a linear motion and it has just a little bit of tooth.?

I find that this brush is fantastic for painting over things and adding just a little bit of texture to things.?

So these two brushes, i used mainly for painting over big lots of area. So adding tiny bits of tooth,?

the next three brushes are essentially my go to brushes for painting.?

Number one is the oil brush. I find that this brush is so convenient for painting just about anything.?

You'll see that if you press really hard, you get this slight color distortion within it that I really enjoy. That is known as color dynamics.?

So if you go to any of your brushes, you can turn on the color dynamics. If you're using photoshop and it will have this little colored digitally included in it. So if you have a brush that you really like and you like this color Jitter, then you can add that color Jitter to your very own rushes. ?

The next brush I call it the Minnesota. This is probably my favorite brush of all time. I found this brush randomly in a concept art brush pack somewhere. I don't really remember where, but this is definitely my favorite painting brush.?

I use this to paint basically anything and everything in my entire life. It looks just like the state of Minnesota.?

Not exactly, but pretty close. So I call it the Minnesota a brush. And yes, I have named all of these for you so that there are more understandable. Their original names were things like good brush 542 four three. Or something like that. And I didn't understand it whatsoever. ?

So you're welcome. I have named everything out for you. The second brush in the oil brush number two,?

that is basically the same thing as the first oil brush, except it's a little bit harder.?

I find that this is great for filling in color. ?

The last three brushes is what I use. If I need to add additional texture.?

The first one is the harried Minnesota. So this brush is fantastic for adding tooth in texture to things like tree bark. If you want a rock, if you want some concrete,?

I find that this is fantastic. For a general texture brush, I find it works for pretty much anything. The second of these three rushes the hairy brick which is essentially the same thing, except it adds a softer kind of tooth.?

This is great for wooden tables. So things that have texture but are a little bit more uniform.?

The last one is what I consider to be the texture extravaganza. This is if I want some pops of texture,?

I find that this works fantastic for anything within nature. And I use it a lot for trees and shrubs and foliage as well.?

And that's pretty much it, including everything here of Iris essential oils and the photoshop brushes that you get automatically. This is basically my entire arsenal.?

I don't even know why I keep the rest of this stuff. If I don't even use it as literally just taking up space. Maybe after this class I will go in and clean some stuff up.?

So within the demo that you seem so far from me, I basically only used these ten brushes.?

And within the speed painting that you'll see next, I will make sure to call out any specific brushes that I think are fantastic for that specific moment.?

And you will definitely find that they are all these brushes here. So i'll call out like, say, oh, right now I'm using the Minnesota. Oh, right now I'm using the harry bricks, which is very strange to hear out of context. But their brushes. Okay, it's fine. So that out of the way I hope that associates your brush hunger and we're gonna get straight to the painting.?
