Mars is truly a fascinating planet for those of us here on Earth? It is about half of the size of Earth and is often referred to as the “Red Planet” because of its red surface.
Mars has seasons like Earth, but the seasons there are twice as long as the seasons on Earth. Mars also has an atmosphere, but it is very thin and made up mostly of carbon dioxide. Because of its thin atmosphere and greater distance from the Sun, Mars is much colder than Earth. However, Mars does have weather, with clouds and winds. The poles on Mars are a lot like Antarctica, capped by ice, but much of Mars’s ice is made from carbon dioxide, not water.
Many scientists believe that studying Mars can help us answer some of the key questions about our planet Earth, or even the universe. But missions to Mars have never been easy. Facing great challenges, many countries will still continue their explorations. Launching the first Mars probe (探測器) from Wenchang around 2020 is China’s first step to explore the “Red Planet”
The Chinese Mars probe is made up of three parts: the orbiter, the lander, and the rover. Entering the Earth-Mars transfer orbit, the Mars probe separates from the launch vehicle. Then the space-to-ground communications link is created. Controllers on Earth guide it into the orbit around Mars. After collecting detailed information about the landing area, the probe is ready for the landing. The orbiter and the lander separate. The orbiter stays in the orbit for at least a year to photograph key areas and monitor the planet’s environment, while the lander heads down to the surface of Mars.
Nine kilometres above the planet, a large parachute(降落傘) opens to slow the landing craft as it falls. After removing the parachute, the lander chooses a safe place to land, where the Martian rover can start operations, collecting and transmitting data back to Earth. After receiving its orders from Earth, the rover leaves the landing point and begins to explore the surface of Mars.
8. How does the writer develop paragraph 2?
A. By making a list.??????????????? ? ?B. By giving examples.
C. By making comparisons.? ? ? D. By analyzing cause and effect.
9. What can we learn about Mars exploration according to the text?
A. China has been exploring Mars for many years.
B. Mars exploration is not so difficult for some countries.
C. Some countries will stop Mars exploration due to great difficulties.
D. Mars exploration can help us better understand the earth and universe.
10. About the flight of the Mars probe, which is the correct order?
① The probe is ready for the landing.
② The Mars probe separates from the launch vehicle.
③ Controllers on Earth guide it into the orbit around Mars.
④ The probe collects detailed information about the landing area.
A. ①②③④? ? ? ? ?B. ④③①②? ? ? ?C. ②③④①? ? ? ? ? D. ②③①④
11. What’s the function of the rover?
A. It slows the landing craft as it falls.
B. It collects and transmits data back to Earth.
C. It helps the lander to find a safe place to land.
D. It guides the probe into the orbit around Mars.

In 1991, the American band The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy called television “the drug (毒品) of the nation.” But more than 30 years later, more and more people are turning away from their televisions. So, has the world kicked the TV habit?
Well, many of us might not be watching regular TV, but instead we’re relaxing ourselves from streaming services and mobile devices (設備). In February 2023, Insider Intelligence foretold that in the US in 2023, for the first time ever, people will spend more time watching digital video than traditional TV. So how did we get here?
It was the Scotsman John Logie Baird who built the first of all televisions in 1925. Progress was quietly being made. Just after World War II, around 8,000 homes in the US had a TV. By 1960, this number had risen to more than 45 million - and the television had overtaken the radio as the device to gather around. TV watching became part of the family habit. And when choice was limited in its early days, millions of people watched the same shows together - something we might now call “event television ” Cable (電纜) and digital TV, with hundreds of programs, began to change that, and event television is now hard to find.
While the popularity of streaming and short online videos comes recently, perhaps the move away from shared TV began when television sets became cheaper and families could afford to buy an extra one for the bedroom or the kitchen. There was no more fighting about what to watch - but also less watching together. Now, with younger generations used to immediate access to content, television as we knew it shows little sign of making a return.
Will it die? No, but it will certainly change. Experts say TV has a future with sports and news. But scripted (有劇本的) shows like talk shows and TV series will be seen more on streaming services, and less on TV.
12. What can we infer from the first two paragraphs?
A. Digital videos will be more popular.
B. People are addicted to TV programs.
C. People have quitted the habit of watching TV.
D. Streaming services have taken the place of TV.
13. Which of the following best explains “event television” underlined in paragraph 3?
A. Programs that attract much attention.
B. Programs that are not limited in number.
C. Television that broadcasts the same shows.
D. Television that is watched by many people together.
14. According to the writer, what’s the possible future of television?
A. It will revive gradually.
B. It will focus more on certain programs.
C?It will disappear from people’s lives soon.
D. It will show more talk shows and TV series.
15. Which could be the best title for the passage?
A. Television: Harming the Generation.
B. Television: Gathering Families Around.
C. The Coming of an Age: Streaming Services Rise.
D. The End of an Age: Traditional TV Viewing Drops.
【答案】12. A??? 13. A??? 14. B??? 15. D

Ladies and gentlemen, Good afternoon!
I feel greatly honored to share my favorite drama with you:The Million Pound Bank Note.
Written by Mark Twain, an American author, the drama is mainly about two millionaire brothers who made a bet on whether a penniless person could survive for a month with a million pound bank note. As a consequence, Henry, the poor and honest hero, was chosen and experienced a series of ridiculous things.
What attracts me most is the vivid and ironic language, which gives me insight into the nature of people. ( 或 者 What impresses me most are the detailed descriptions of different people’s behavior before the bank note.) So I highly recommend it to you all and hopefully you can give it a try!
That s’ all! Thank you!

Monty Roberts was the son of an itinerant(流動的) horse trainer who would go from farm to farm and ranch to ranch (大牧場), training horses. As a result, the boy’s high school career was continually interrupted. When he was a senior, he was asked to write a paper about what he wanted to be and do when he grew up.
That night Monty wrote a seven-page paper describing his goal of some day owning a horse ranch. He wrote about his dream in great detail and he even drew a diagram of a 200-acre ranch, showing the location.of all the buildings. Then he drew a detailed floor plan for a 4,000-square-foot house that would sit on the 200-acre dream ranch.
He put a great deal of his heart into the project and the next day he handed it in to his teacher. Two days later he received his paper back. On the front page was a large red F with a note that read,“See me after class.”
Monty felt puzzled, so he went to see the teacher after class immediately and asked,“Ms, why did I receive an F?”
“Monty, this is an unrealistic dream for a young boy like you.”Ms Green, his literature eacher, said gently,“You come from an itinerant family. You have no money. Owning a horse ranch requires a lot of money. You have to buy the land. You have to pay for the original breeding(繁殖) horse and later you’ll have to pay kinds of fees. There’s no way you could ever do it.”Then the teacher added,“If you will rewrite this paper with a more realistic goal, I will reconsider your grade.”

【答案】One possible version:
After thinking about it long and hard, the boy went home and asked his father what he should do. Staring at the puzzled boy with a slight smile, his father said, “My boy, I know it is a very important decision for you. Just follow your heart, and you are bound to make the right choice.” Nodding slowly, the boy lost himself in thought. After sitting with it for a whole day, the boy finally turned in the same paper, making no changes at all. He stated, “You can keep the F and I’ll keep my dream.”
Twenty years passed and last summer, Ms Green brought 30 kids to camp out on Monty’s ranch for a week. The kids had a wonderful time in the vast ranch. They rode horses, admired the beautiful buildings, even played games in the big house. Before leaving, Ms Green apologized to Monty, “Sorry! As your teacher, I was something of a dream stealer. ” She said with shame, “Fortunately you had enough courage to hold on to your dream.” Monty smiled, saying, “Ms Green, it is just the F that encourages me to achieve my dream. Thank you!” Hearing this, Ms Green smiled, her face wet with tears.
