1. Design Principles---4-2.Homework

P13 - 00:00?

?Your homework is to divide into two parts. First part would be actually daily exercises.?

I want you to do this on a daily basis because I think I truly believe that practice is very important. And also we will be having big assignment, which will be done weekly.?

So from now on every week I will give you two assignments, daily practise and weekly.?

So remember I kept saying that simple is good. So what we will be trying to do with the daily exercise, we will be trying to keep them simple.?

That's why I showed you a very simple method of getting greedy abstract textures like this one.?

And there is a separate tutorial how to do this. So what I want you to do on a daily basis spent 15 to 30 minutes. ?

Or you can go and spend two hours if you want. But set up yourself a very strict deadline.?

Like put a time limit, let's say 15 minutes. For example, for these frames are quite finished. Actually, these frames are going to be a weakness. I spent around 45 minutes on the page around on average.?

Some of them took an hour. Some of them took half an hour. So 15 minutes is a good limit. You don't need to go the details. But what I want you to do, open your texture file.?

Let’s just duplicate this. Delete everything. Starts from scratch.?

painting something. And then distorted and season some story. How high is this? It's the same stuff that I showed you in previous lessons. So what I want you to do, basically in this daily exercise to improve your abstract thinking.?

So these are going to be improving your abstract thinking.?

as you go, you will realize how quickly, because this method is so simple, how quickly you can assemble a really small story.?

Like, let's check if this story reads. We've got a guy on the moon driving cars driving very fast. And at some point he screws up. His rover is broken. And his rover is broken, and he basically just leaves the rover, takes another. And he starts climbing the mountain. And he is basically in the end on the top of the mountain.?

So don't worry about storytelling. You should think about storytelling. But there are so many rules, like continuity of framing and stuff like that that you need to think about.?

for now, forget about those. It's very important. But what I really wanted to start with this to start thinking abstract.?

And then you put your frames. And then you will start organizing them. Like in the next lecture, we will see composition and different approaches and stuff like that. So we will definitely improve your storytelling.?

But for now all I want you to do is to get abstract. And this will be your first week daily practice.?

Do some of these frames create a story? Even if you don't have a story, in my opinion? It doesn't matter.?

Just start doing some inputs and textures. See, maybe there is a rock somewhere and you can start playing with it.?

So this will be your daily practice. And on the weekly practice, ?

what I want you to do. And frame a composition that you like, and then you will just refine that.?

How much do you need to refine them? It's up to you. But again, I would give like approximately, let's say, fully, for like an average student, like two hours per frame. Is a good amount of time.?

So overall, I expect from you if you do like Free frames six hours plus daily exercises.?

And depending on how much time you have you can do it at least six hours and then move on, when I was a student, when I was learning this stuff, I would spend a lot of time on daily exercise. Like I would do like frame after frame frame of the frame. I would just fill the pages. And this is how you learn.?

But don't forget. stay simple. Don't create the over complicated compositions. ?

Even if you need to create like a simple composition with just the guy standing over here, some nice texture. Start with it.?

you can put like a simpler earth there and you have a story. That's what I want you to do. I don't want you to be the very first lecture to build a really complicated lunar base like or something like that.?

We will do all that stuff like the next lesson. We will get composition. Go to story telling the different approaches perspective and stuff like that.?

So we will learn all the tools, but don't forget between you and your stories. There's a lot of gap knowledge. But what we want to do, we want to get shortcuts and get from here to here as soon as possible.?

And it's doable guys, because i've done it before. And I truly believe anyone has ideas. He can all he needs is just to be smart. Stay focused through daily practice. And the weekly practice.?

So to summarize, your homework will be to create a few daily exercises using abstract textures, and then taking them to the next level. All right, guys. Good luck.?

?

2. Storytelling and Composition---1-1.Recap

P14 - 00:00?

?let's make a quick recap on the first week. So in the first week we started with design elements and as I showed you, will be using these five elements to basically create anything we will be doing.?

As a rule of thumb, we will start very simple. We will just use pure shapes because to do this kind of shape, you don't need master of painting or drawing you did, all you need is to understand how to put the basic shapes together.?

I showed you how to introduce form. Like you're using a light, using cross sections, you can actually define the form.?

Once you define the formula, your story will change accordingly, like in this case, once you put the light on the sphere, you can understand that this is a round spherical object above the plane.?

Then we introduce some kind of texture to emphasize the scale of this bank.?

And as you can see. I mean, when you introduced the texture, everything changes. this thing looks completely different. Now it has a vast scale and it's not a small sphere about the planet is actually a huge planet behind another planet.?

So that's why I introduced the concept of very abstract texture to show you how using bevel and numbers in photoshop, you can pay those textures and use it because they are so abstract. You can pull and stretch them to use those to a completely different experience. We use this to create a set of very primitive, very simple compositions.?

And I picked those. And I refined that the final artwork, as you can see the summary of the first week is all about being simple and efficient. And using the simplest design elements we'll be designing our stories, the more we simplify the technical aspect, the more we spend time on the creative side of it, which is really important for our story.?

So that's it. And let's move on to week number two.?

?

2. Storytelling and Composition---1-2.Overview

P15 - 00:00?

?This is the second week of our course, and as I read it in our recap session. The first week was from design elements. And there were five elements that we could use to create our designs.?

And to start a small story. But now it’s time for design principles. How actually you will use those five elements like form a shape or texture, contrast and space.?

How you will rearrange those to actually start forming your stories. ?

And design principles. If you go to week period, there is a huge list of the terms. Some of them are very complicated. And some of them really don't make sense when you actually read them. That's why I wanted to filter everything for you explain and show you what I think is the most important.?

And just to simplify everything, remember I kept always saying simple is good. So we will start with the contrast will show a little bit of repetition and composition and abstract composition as well.?

First one will be contrast. And basically it's a very simple rule. Like there is an infinite amount of contrasts, but for me, it has been always been full. it has always been like big, medium and small.?

And once you understand this rule, you can introduce and use contrast very effectively. Afterwards I will show you repetition the same thing.?

Just by repeating things in space. You can create change your stories dramatically.?

That's why it's being repetition is another very important design principle. And I will show you a couple of examples of that. And then we will go to abstract composition.?

Actually, i'll show you the very basic primitive composition rules that I use on a daily basis.?

Because composition is something like if we would do like a proper lesson or lecture course on the composition.? it would take weeks to explain everything. But I will just filter on summarize like the core idea behind my composition choices.?

And I think you guys will find it very easy for. So and afterwards is the final simon, I want to see some very quick sketches and abstract compositions.?

So first week was more like being a final pictures was more about being the final pictures. But second week will be more about daily practice because things like abstract design comes with time and practice.?

And the more you do it, the better your brain starts to look. And that's my goal. Also I will try to alternate those exercises like running one week will be doing like simple, like a lot of exercise for next week we will be doing more complicated but less heavy exercises. So I'm pretty excited. And let's get started.?

?

2. Storytelling and Composition---2-1.Understanding Contrast

P16 - 00:01?

Let’s talk about another design principle, which is contrasts. If you go back to our PDF page, you can see a long definition, a list of terms that describe contrast.?

But as I promised you. A little bit further a lot. So basically only used to be honest when I’m doing something is this definition over here. So I use big, small and medium.?

Some people call it like 70 25 percent or 5%. And this is a universal rule that you can use for anything.?

You can use for environment. for characters. For anything you want.?

Let me show you how it works. Basically, it's very, very straightforward. For example, if you're trying to fill out the frame,?

Let's just extend this catalyst first. I would like to start actually with brushes using.?

We all know that these brushes. It doesn't really matter which one you can pick up air brush. which is a flat area brush is still good do an amazing job.?

But I tried to select brushes that only have a natural consciousness on them. For example these brush is very good for graphic design.?

The way it’s When I make a vertical line, it's thick, when I make a horizontal line. It’s thinner.?

So that allows me already through a natural kind of contrast.?

So whatever I do. I put a mark on vertical lines and more like bolder than my horizontal lines.?

So that's why I don't need to care about contrast inside my brush.?

Or I use an extreme version of a plan. my vertical line is very narrow, and my horizontal line is very fake.?

So let's just see how it works when I’m doing work like thumbnails.?

Ok, if I'm doing a thumbnail, I'm trying to avoid doing this. This is like, for example, if I framing. There is not much contrast.?

because you can see this distance. The equal, we will be trying to do our best to avoid it. It's not like it's a rule of thumb. Like you can do composition? like that as well. But what we really want to try to understand is how to work with this big medium and small constant.?

So basically, if you put a Mark and you've got a medium over here, you've got a big area over here. And then you put a small one.?

and then there’s something else. And then immediately your composition, it becomes more graphically appealing and story wise. It becomes more interesting as well.?

So what I would like you to do when you doing the daily exercises, for example, start with the contrast, put a few marks.?

Let's do it like this. And it works as well. put smaller over here.? Then we put the next one, for example, as do something different. Let's put the mark like this, like this small one.?

Or you can put in the screen. like as a content. It doesn't really matter what it is. We are trying to stay abstract. Our goal. It stay abstract at this moment.?

Like there is no content involved. Because we can take this one, for example. And afterwards we can multiply it a few times.?

And it could be completely different things. Like if you had I like it. A guy over here. Then this becomes a giant thing.?

Or you can do like, let's say, if it was like astronaut. actually like an astronaut needs his shoulder pattern, and he is looking up.?

And you make a face inside. Or it could be something else. it's up to you. You had something over here. And you've got a different story. Like it's the same landmarks. It is the same abstract form. When I actually screamed my eyes and then zoom out. I don't see the difference,?

but this is why this is important. Once you will resolve the graphic look, remember we are always looking for a graphic look.?

Once you nail down the graphic, the content will come. as you can see, this is a huge scenery. If you can put a couple of clouds behind.?

And this is the astronaut looking somewhere. Like put a little bit a couple of tubes and stuff like that.?

And this is another guy with his dog maybe, or whatever it is an animal. And only amusing this constant of big, small and medium.?

Let's try doing a character as well. For example, if you're doing a character, you kind of being the same room.?

So let's say you're putting some marks. Let's pick up this guy. I'm using the same principle when I'm designing this guy. I'm following the same room, but big shapes, medium shades, putting a couple of like small shapes as well.?

And it doesn't necessarily need to be costume design or something like that. Remember we are again being like a very abstract painting.?

So you can start putting some stuff over here. And as you work it up, it will become more and more pretty and more and more beautiful designs. If you stick with it with these rules, like I put a big shape and then I need to refine with some kind of small shapes, ?

And it's all about the graphic look like. Who is this guy. As a character. It could be anything about when you squint your eyes from the distance, you don't see much difference. But when you start putting content, like, let's say this is some kind of medieval guy, It's something you put a couple of arches.?

You put the sword in his hand. You could just putting the big cross over here. We will know it's somewhere from crusaders, from that area.?

Putting the sword, make them holding the sword. ?

And you've got one character. And we started really abstract. We started with the gesture priority by putting big shapes, medium and small shapes. ?

And who is this guy? You can completely change the character, by just bring a little bit different.?

and then once you put the graphic shape, and you can start explore the character, like who is this guy.what is this guy, this guy could be a? character from the starters. and he is get the red full. Just changing it really slightly.? like what we get the ruffle. Then we get completely character. But what we really started with just put like a big shape. Then we put the medium shapes. And then I started as you can see it, I would putting like a really small shapes to make him look more appealing.?

Same for this guy. For example. You can put these and then you can make like a huge flag behind his back.?

Same stuff When we need vehicles, let's say when you’re going vehicles as well. let's say you can do some kind of make design, or you need to do is using and utilizing this idea of putting big shape. And then you cut in some small shapes. Some cables. I like this guy. ?

So that people keep asking what is behind the design choices. And like I just keep this in mind. This very simple rule. And then you can create infinite amount of contrast.?

Like if we take a look, go back and take a look at the list over here. You can see the space for your complex direction and so forth. It's all coming one final kind of principle big medium and small 70 25, 5%,?

let's say, for example, if you're doing something like this, like if you do 80% of the curving lines. And then once we put one straight line, that becomes composition and beautifully designed frame because then it can start to make sense.?

What is this actually, it could be a guy who’s walking woods. Like we do like this, like could be a hunter and the ease of the woods. You know what I mean??

By doing this, Free media emphasizes these guys are creating your story. They're saying, okay, I know this story is about a guy in the woods.?

Let’s see. What else do we have really mean? The first lesson about textures from like density gravity.?

I really don't want you to kind of explain every one of those, because then it will become really boring. Trust me keeping in mind, big, medium and small ratio.?

And you will be really fine. And you will be in a good position. Always changing my brush. Creating big shapes, medium shapes and small shapes, Composition done.?

just delete this guy. A couple of more. So that's all that is about contrast. I promise you I will just filter everything can give you the most essential and critical and important part of design principles and for contrast, follow this rule. And you will always find yourself in a really good position. And you will have a really good, nice graphic design that will help you to tell your stories. ?

?

2. Storytelling and Composition---2-2.Contrast Excerise

P17 - 00:00?

?Let me show you a quick abstract exercise to practice your understanding of context.?

Basically, it's very straightforward. It's kind of repeating what I’ve already told you just keep the ratio big, small, medium.?

But What you're gonna do this daily exercises. Try to limit yourself time was spent like 20 to 30 seconds per each.?

And just follow the rule. Don’t think too much. Like, for example, let’s start designing something like the big marks small. Just try to keep the design ratio.?

And then jump to the next one. And then be very scribbling as well. You don’t need to be very precise. All you need to care about is creating big shapes, medium and small.?

They just do those. what is this thing? It could be a raw, it could be something. It doesn't really matter at this point. It's like the under version. Or is this going to be a gun, right? ?

And then what you can do, you can restrict yourself like, let's say I'm doing landscapes. Let's say I just draw landscapes.?

Using just the same principle, you will start putting like what landscape approach we need to frame it as well.?

And you put like a big shape and then put a smaller shape. And then put a very tiny shape as well.?

Then add another one. And then you can set yourself a day of, for example, guns.?

Let's say props. And then you do the same thing. Put a big shape. 20 seconds later, you start another one. Basically like spending 20, 30 minutes. Without restricting yourself about. What are you actually doing? You generate a new improving your abstract way of thinking.?

You're still saying very abstract, what is this gun, for example? It could be a sniper rifle,?

It's very obvious. So you look, there is a fighting fire over here.all you need is just to add a couple of indicators. Immediately become a bit more. What is this thing about.?

And then on this one, it could be a gun facing that way, depending on where you put your Maybe this thing works as. Let's put? point of view over here then you understand the mechanism the way it works. So story changes so much.?

But once again, you start with a graphic design. Graphic I keep saying this thing because I think it's very important to start a graphic look. And then you go your story. So if in your story, there was a guy with it sniper rifle, you would go with this one, even though the shape is similar. But if you start with something else like this guy is obviously not a long range weapon as the previous one, because it has a short barrel and stuff like that.?

So all of those small things, this is actually what really matters, not the very complicated, highly polished then good looking. Pretty picture.?

What matters? Really it’s the story behind it. So that's why with male wrapping element to post graphic, look at them. We're proceed to the whole story.?

And because it's so simple, so easy to manipulate and change the story as well. So I would advise that you spend at least 15 minutes a day doing those abstract exercises. ?

As a subject, you can do whatever you want. That's fine equals but all that really matters is that you keep this ratio mind, big, medium, or small.?

Whatever I put a shape. Like I fix it sometimes when it's not working, because I understand that I need a little bit of a bigger shape or I need a little bit of smaller shapes.?

And as I go, it becomes it's a design piece that becomes more and more complete. Because I’m using everything I know about contrast.?

So that's the daily exercise. I would like you guys to spend doing and you will definitely seeing the abstract way of thinking and also improve the design sense as well.?
