KOLKATA: The government is in the process of acquiring around 200 aircraft to cope with the depleting aerial inventories of the Indian Air Force, defence secretary Ajay Kumar said here on Sunday.

The good thing is Pakistan''s air force''s needs are now well supplemented thanks to brilliant thinking with timely decisions and proceedings so need to concentrate on next gen now. We have good partners with whom we can work which is extremely important. Not looking to reinvent the wheel is one reason we have not sunk into some ego boosting glory.

JF-17 Block 3 gives Pakistan a Gripen E capable jet at less than half the cost and propels Pakistani aerospace tech and some of the money stays in Pakistan as well.

There is more to this acquisition than simply planes. Its a carrot. It helps India to push its diplomatic goals too. France, USA, UK and Russia all want a piece of that defense deal, so they support India diplomatically. It has worked quite well in past too.

As Rafale procurement is too expensive to fill the gap in IAF.
Its bare minimum which Indian Govt has to do to maintain least recommended Squadron strength which is due to fall to below 31 once Mig-21 will be retired in coming 5 years.
Minimum recommend strength is 39 Squadrons and for facing 2 front war minimum defensive strength is 52 squadrons.
110 less expensive fighters are surely coming
Tejas MK1A is also a surety
36 Rafales are done deal... another batch of 36 is not sured as of now.
57 Indian Navy MRCA are also required which will likely be reduced to 35-45 in numbers.

gets a very good and the most cost effective option with USA good books for navy f18 best option

the only edge the Euro jets had over Americans 4 g was aesa and other such avionics
but Americans have now upgraded there f-teen series with f35 derivatives so that edge is lost and Americans one r cheaper too

F-16 reduce the cost of F-15 programme
F-14 air superiority
F-18 carrier based interceptor
F-22 to kick Chinese and Russian ****
F-31 stealth version of F-16.

India need to work hard for a decade in this area so that we may not have to buy any plane from outside. We can top class planes in a decade as well as we can have all building blocks of these technology.
