Dongzhi, which is called Winter Solstice is an important solar term in the lunar calendar in China. It generally occurs between December the 21st and the 23rd .And it is on December the 22nd this year. On this day in the northern hemisphere, the period of daytime is the shortest of the year, and the period of night is the longest. From Dongzhi, people begin to “Shu Jiu”. Shu means count and Jiu means nine days. One Jiu contains nine days. Jiujiu means 81 days. After 81 days, the warm spring will be coming. Winter Solstice has a history of more than 2000 years. In ancient China, it was more important than the Spring Festival. Families got together to celebrate Winter Solstice at that time. Now people in the north usually eat jiaozi on this day. People in southern China will make and eat tangyuan ,or rice dumplings, to symbolize the reunion of family. What do you eat on Winter Solstice? Stay warm and healthy, and good luck in the new coming year. Happy Winter Solstice!
