PhD in atmospheric chemistry – Photolytic versus oxidant-driven organic aerosol aging

1?Project background

The research project aims at better understanding the aging processes of atmospheric aerosol particles.?

During photochemical aging, the viscosity of aerosol particles may increase from a liquid to a glassy or solid-state, thereby significantly altering their environmental impact.?

However, it is unknown whether photochemical aging favors viscosity increase, nor whether there are synergetic effects between photolytic aging and aging through the uptake of gas-phase oxidants such as ozone.?

The project's focus will be comparing the two aging processes, photolysis and ozonolysis?individually and in combination on single droplets levitated in an electrodynamic balance (EDB) using proxy reactions systems for organic aerosol particles.?

You?will be crucial in advancing our laboratory setup that couples an EDB to a mass spectrometer.?

Firstly, for determining viscosity we plan to measure the characteristic coalescence time of two particles colliding, secondly, we will replace the vaporization stage, which transfers the particulate compounds to the gas phase before ionization, with a method protecting labile compounds from thermal decomposition.

An “open port sampling interface” (OPSI) with subsequent electrospray ionization offers this capability.

2?Job description

You will contribute to the development and testing of an OPSI and implement the coalescence measurements.?

You will perform ozonolysis and photochemistry experiments, and compare the results with processed-based aerosol chemistry simulations.?

The project duration is three years and the position can be taken as soon as possible.

3 Your profile

You should:

  • Hold an MSc degree (or equivalent) in atmospheric or environmental sciences, physical chemistry, or experimental physics.

  • Be curious, creative, and collaborative as well as able to think critically about your own measured and modeled data.

  • Be keen on developing new instrumentation as well as applying it to physical and chemical processes in the atmosphere.

  • Have good written and oral communication skills in English.

Prior hands-on laboratory skills are essential. Some experience in mass spectrometry or optical spectroscopy will be a plus.

1?Job description

The Professorship for Cellular Agriculture (Prof. Dr.-Ing. Marius Henkel) was established in September 2022.?

Cellular agriculture is a multidisciplinary field that explores biotechnological solutions to the environmental, ethical, and sustainability challenges of conventional animal agriculture.?

Our research focus is the development of alternative proteins for food applications, through high-performance microbial bioprocesses (“precision fermentation”) and tissue engineered cultured meat from animal cells.

2 Your profile

RequirementsWe are looking for applicants with a Master’s degree in biotechnology, bioengineering, bioeconomy cell biology, molecular biology, or a comparable field of study, preferably with a background in life cycle assessment (LCA) and
techno-economic analysis (TEA) or an affinity towards these research questions.

  • Basic knowledge in bioprocess design, bioengineering and/or mathematic modeling

  • Affinity towards research question in life cycle assessments, techno-economic analysis

  • Advantageous: experience in up-scaling, bioeconomy, and decentralized business models

  • Proficiency of the English language, both written and spoken

  • Interest in and enjoyment of scientific research questions especially in the area of cellular agriculture

3 Tasks

Depending on suitability and personal profile, potential tasks include but are not limited to:

  • Perform LCA and TEA of a defined process for cultivated meat with material cycling

  • Optimize the process, also applying mathematic modeling, to improve yield and sustainability

  • Independent work on research projects

  • Close cooperation with project partners from academia and industry

  • Publication of research results in leading journals

  • Supervision of student projects as well as cooperation in lectures

  • General lab management and operational responsibilities
