The Biggest Problems with Genshin Impact

Genshin Impact, one of the latest adventure JRPGs, has gained astonishing popularity amongst gamers worldwide. But as time passes by, lots of problems with it has surfaced and left a negative "impact" on many people's impression of the video game. As a traveler lived in Teyvat over 15 months, I would like to briefly discuss some of the biggest problems.

A major problem is the significant decrease in quality of the plot. In my view, the very beginning of the main plot (Mondstadt) appears to be quite attractive and reasonable (Venti is so cute). But as the plot moves on, more and more stories become obviously abnormal or just boring. For example, why aren't any of The Seven Archons able to provide the heroine with any information about her brother, but instead there's a man called Dainsleif who seems to know everything showing up abruptly?

Another problem is the overabundance of game elements. Too many in-game interactive methods, subsystems and small gadgets have been introduced, making some players feel overwhelmed. For example, the fishing system in Genshin Impact is often criticized as a "disposable feature". Fishing activity is limited to a few specified places. You aren't allowed to go fishing at Starfell Lake. Instead, the only way to get the fishes in that lake is to jump into the water and grab them with F key.

Next, it's believed that the UI design of the game has confused many players including myself. The PC version of the game seems like a ported mobile game, as it doesn't have many keyboard shortcuts which are obviously necessary for PC gamers. For example, pop-up dialogues in the game only support Esc key for cancel, but not supporting Enter key for confirmation. What's more, it even doesn't allow pressing any key to login the game. You must left click the mouse to start. It's just so ridiculous for a PC game to have a design like this.

The fourth problem, which is controversial, lies in how the game profits. Genshin Impact is a typical Japanese-style gacha game, allowing free-to-play (F2P), but inducing players to spend money for lotteries in order to get appealing high-level characters and weapons. What's important is that the lottery system offers a relatively very small drop rate (as low as 0.6%), forcing players with bad luck to cost more money for the same result, and seemingly creating unfairness between players.

Lastly, the marketing strategy of miHoYo Inc. (who developed Genshin Impact) also plays a significant role in impacting the public review of the game. MiHoYo does a great job in advertisement and has successfully attracted an enormous number of gamers to jump into the game, thus gaining countless profits. However, as more and more players who don't belong to the circle of Japanese anime culture join the game, it has witnessed a chaos in the game community. Besides, some aggressive miHoYo advocates don't care about how objective and reasonable a criticism over the game is. Instead, they always attack critics, no matter the critics love or hate the game. For me, this is the most disgusting factor regarding the game.

To make Genshin Impact a better video game for players like us, miHoYo needs to change. But it's well known that profit comes first for business companies like miHoYo. It's nearly impossible for it to compromise profit just for little improvements in user experience. (END)
